Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animated?

It would seem that Warner Animation is considering developing "The Dark Knight Returns" into one of their future DTV projects. Speculation right now though. Of course this is one of many fan dream projects that we've wanted to see brought to the small (or big) screen. Frank Miller's "Year One" of course is currently in development ready for a projected fall 2011 release.

I'm all for it. You think Conroy will come back for it?

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

^ I don't know. One of Timm's mandates is to use different casts as much as possible. I think they'll go for someone else if this is green lit.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

The DC Universe Animated Original Movies generally use a new cast each time, but they have brought Conroy back as Batman three times to date, in the Gotham Knight anime anthology tying into the second Nolan movie and in the two Superman/Batman adaptations, Public Enemies and Apocalypse.

However, if they did Dark Knight Returns (which I'd be just as happy if they didn't), I'd think it would be better to find a different actor to play Batman, since it's a very different interpretation of Batman.

A scene from TDKR was animated as part of the New Batman Adventures episode "Legends of the Dark Knight." In it, Michael Ironside played Batman.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

If they didn't use Conroy I would hope they use Ironside. Kevin is Batman but Michael Ironside is just plain dark.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

Even as a casual Bat-fan (I've never collected or read any ongoing type of comic, just the movies and the 90's animated series and what trade paperbacks I can borrow from the library), when I borrowed TDKR from the library, I knew it was something special. I hope they give this the room it needs to breathe, both in ways of dark imagery and runtime. I don't see 75 minutes cutting it for something like this.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

I wish they'd make this into a live action mega budget spectacular, but I'll take the animated version.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

Keep in mind this isn't confirmed yet. This was just a speculative piece. Although considering that "Justice League: Doom" was announced at Wonder Con it'd be logical to assume that this will be the second project for 2012. I'm sure we'll get a follow up piece soon.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

Do people enjoy adaptations of classics more than original stories?

I'm just asking because TDKR is held in such high regard I don't think an adaptation will live up to the books standards. So I'm wondering why would they even try (besides the obvious money factor). And then, if people have the comics, why not just read it? It won't be better than the book, there's no possible way, so why even try?

Sometimes I do. Sometimes I don't.
Sometimes I enjoy them just as much as the original.
If it's something I like, I'm curious how people adapt it.

Why couldn't it be better than the book? It IS a possibility.
It probably won't be, but that doesn't mean it won't be entertaining. And isn't that the point?

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

I don't know if it's a case of people enjoying classic stories more than original ones as it is that people want to see their favorite stories be adapted into film or television.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

^^
It's possible, but it seems that most of these get the "they ruined my childhood" reactions.

Maybe because this is animated it will be better?

I'm just thinking of the more direct adaptations (all I can think of are live action at the moment) like Watchmen and the rest.

Or, taken another way, given the option, why spend money for something I already have when they can instead focus on something new that I've never seen before that could be just as, if not more, interesting? Or is there less risk in an adaptation?

I guess I'd just prefer new material. Nevermind me, carry on. :)

Those that claim some work of fiction "ruined my childhood" are whiny fanboys who are actually in the minority. They are stupid and should be ignored.

I don't know if it will make it better or worse, but, it's what they are going with. Makes sense. A live action version might be to expensive and it IS the last Batman story, so, how do you do a sequel? (I mean that seriously, did you read DKR2? Holy shit that was awful.)

Yeah, I felt it was a little soulless, and personally, they shoulda done it as a mini series. But, there are people who like it.

But, maybe, the other choice, for a two hour movie, would be to adapt it further away from the source material. Risky, but there you go.

Or, taken another way, given the option, why spend money for something I already have when they can instead focus on something new that I've never seen before that could be just as, if not more, interesting? Or is there less risk in an adaptation?

Simply: yes. There is less risk. Just consider THIS project, how many of us are already interested. And they just had to do a press release. That's it. There's name recognition. There's already a plot that works. You already have that going into production. It could go wrong, sure, but, so could do something original that you also have to spend time and money introducing people to.

I guess I'd just prefer new material. Nevermind me, carry on. :)

I dig it. And they do do that, from time to time. The Superman/Shazam DVD had a bunch of new stuff-- Captain Marvel and Supes, A Spectre short, a Jonah Hex short, a Green Arrow short. Good stuff. saw it streaming on Netflix.

Re: Warner Bros Considering Developing The Dark Knight Returns Animate

They're going to announce the full slate of 2012 movies for the DC Universe line some time this summer, so we'll know in a few months if The Dark Knight Returns is one of them (although it's possible it's in early development for further down the line). I'd love to see TDKR adapted and I figured they'd adapt it if they were allowed to - there being a chance that the feature film division might nix it if they wanted to keep open the option of a live action feature adaptation.
