Is anyone else sick to death of the Daleks, and the 'one ship escaped' nonsense we've had to sit through whenever they inexplicably return? They've now moved beyond the stormtrooper/orc level of uselessness, and into a new strata of 'cant get the job done'. I liked them in the first series, and I didnt mind them in the second, but by now their chances to kill the doctor have been so numerous and diverse that I cant take them seriously anymore.

Remember how threatening that one dalek in 'Dalek' was? They cant do that anymore because they have been so overused. You know they arent going to get the doctor, and you know that they're just going to come back again, so theres nothing at all at stake whenever they return. I think they should forget about the daleks for a good couple of series.

Anyone else totally sick of them?

I agree the "one ship fell through time" thing was ridiculous after the first time.

Really, the Daleks have had dozens of chances to kill the Doctor if you go all the way back to 1963.

I've always liked them as enemies, so probably won't ever get sick of them. But better writing & motivations for them couldn't hurt.

I think we've had ourselves enough Dalek special guest appearances to last us three lifetimes. Boy, all those awful things the Doctor did to kill them were utterly useless, in the end. Good going, champ! *shakes head*

They should snuff the life out of 'em for good and come up with some other deadly and scary menace. The Daleks have gone the way of the Borg. They have jumped the shark years ago. That "Daleks working with Churchill" gig was the last straw imo.

At least that was their only real appearance in the last series (although I think they made a cameo in episode 13). I just hope they can continue to avoid the "one ship escaped" trope in 2011.

Well that was part of the point of the new Dalek Paradigm (aside from H&S and marketing reasons) to actually have the Daleks come back as a proper ongoing menace who weren't defeated every time thus neccesitating finding some ridiculous way to bring them back.

I've always said the Doctor should fight skirmishes with the Daleks, not utterly defeat them every time, it devalues them and makes the show look stupid when they invariably come back again.

I don't want to see them got rid of, but I don't think we need to see them every year...oh to have that sense of anticipation before Dalek once again!

Yes!

Though thankfully that's been swept aside in season 5.

There's no chance they won't be back anyway - not after spending all that cash redesigning the buggers for the toy line that needs advertising

I think its gone beyond that now. The weeping angel guys dont really seem to have much 'motivation', but they are new and interesting, and they are a type of enemy that is unlike everything else. Thus they place our main characters in different situations, where they have to respond in different ways.

Is there now an element left within the Daleks (as a storytelling device) that really makes them different from any other monster of the week?

Im not sick of them. I dont really take them that seriosuly, well, the RTD Daleks anyway because they were almost a tongue in cheek villain that would shake and rant and the voice would get higher.

The lone Dalek in 'Dalek' was the best of the RTD Daleks. It was cold, evil and calculating, but then it got mutated with human dna and that was that, touching story though. But the Dalek early on in the story was what i was hoping for later on in the series, yeah they were ok, but i thought RTD was finally going to give them the bad-assness they so deserved in the 21st century.

To be honest, the new paradigm Daleks are a lot more, well, cold and, well, bad-asser. The design may be a little off putting at times, but theyre easier to take seriosuly, character wise.

Now a Dalek companion for the Doctor would be awesome.

that would be so cool. A Dalek with a heart and a taste for adventure. Dunno what skimpy clothes they could where, maybe a more seductive version of the utility belt thing in Victory of the Daleks last year, like a man-kini design, or just put nipples on every bump with a multi cup bra.

I hated them. They look cool but it's s huge failure by season 3. Glad to hear series 5 (which I haven't yet) cuts back on them.

I am very sick of the "one ship escaped" thing. I had such high hopes for Stevie Moffat, and what does he do? He goes ahead and pulls the same story out of nowhere and makes them look ridiculous. At least he caved to fan pressure and said "We haven't changed all the Daleks, just given them an officer class." and thus made it so we shouldn't have to see the iDaleks all over the place.

"Dalek" was the single best Dalek story of all time. That includes "Genesis of the Daleks" and "Remembrance of the Daleks."

That being said, they can be misused in various stories, IMO.

I wouldn't mind the Master coming back, but only if he's John Simm. Or similarly cute.
....which would be a challenge.

John Simm seemed the perfect mirror for David Tennant. I would say new Master for a new Doctor.

Anyway, the Daleks are best when they're the most menacing, which means the main characters don't defeat them, they just run from them. I think having them as an established organization again will help in the long run, but we'll see.

Makes me wonder if they can make a modern Master/Daleks story. Apart from a few novels and comics here and there, The two only were on-screen once, in "Frontier In Space" (and then, only in the last episode), and sort of later in the TV movie where an unknown incarnation was exterminated by them. The new series does mention him being involved in the Time War, but running away (perhaps because he 'died' once, thanks to them). Apparentally the Daleks were going to be in "End of Time" but that idea was dropped.



"Victory" had an interesting premise-it was kind of a semi- remake of the now lost "Power of the Daleks". But the paradigm thing kind of was obviously an attempt to create new Dalek merchandise. I would've preferred they actually try something new with the Dalek design, rather than simply giving us what are pretty much the movie Daleks. I personally think they should get rid of the eyestalk and plunger, as they are perhaps the most dated elements of their design.
