Months of preparation and hours messing with PAINT bring us two posters soon to be at theaters

Apparently one of the lesser-known mutant powers is the ability to project the image of your younger self from your junk.

Most print advertising for movies these days is awful. I was just reading a book about poster artist Drew Struzan. He recently retired. Partially because how little demand there is for traditional illustration in film advertising now. But even when filmmakers who are fans of his like Frank Darabont and Guillermo del Toro have requested him to do posters for their films, they had no power to make the studios use the art. Its all in the power of the studios advertising divisions.

Don't forget the godawful DVD/Blu-ray cover art too.

So I would certainly agree that a bad movie poster should not badly reflect the quality of the film itself. Though yet they do certainly create a bad first impression.

I guess it's appropriate that Donald Draper should have a view on marketing and advertising! ;)

Edit - oh, and here's a pic of Havok:

I think the point some of us are trying to make are that you shouldn't base your entire decision on seeing a film JUST on how the advertising looks. Sure that goes a long way to contribute your decision but not the entirety of it surely. I will admit that the advertising for this movie has been questionable from the start and these posters are only going to add to some fans disgruntlement. My response was to StarTrek1701's notion that this movie is a rush job and that the advertising is somehow a linchpin to make that judgment. If the trailer was underwhelming then perhaps I would be inclined to agree but to me it wasn't. It only added to my excitement and confidence about this film.

I think beyond the overall lack of imagination of all film adverstsing these days, this example shows a concern on Fox's part. That they tie this film to the previous X-men movies as much as possible. Its got no bankable leads and the characters don't instantly resemble their older incarations.

Umm I do sound like my fictional namesake don't I... ;)

I been thinking of going back to school. One possiblity is adversting. Its certainly something I have an interest in. My father is in outdoor adversting. A sign Painter. Its subject I have thought about my whole life.

James McAvoy isn't a bankable lead? I know he's a critically acclaimed actor. He's not really been in a lot of blockbusters so that might be an unfair comment. I will agree that the cast in general doesn't have a lot of well known actors. If you are fan of genre films maybe you'd recognize most of them. I kind of knew that when it was confirmed this would not be an adaption of the "First Class" comic that it would divide fans. It's clearly not the X-Men film people were expecting. I like the fact that it seems to hark back to Singers film in visual style and story. I personally can't wait for this. My excitement level has taken time to fully realize but I'm pumped now.

^ Exactly. I'm not going to say that I haven't done it...because I have...the internet makes it so easy to give a knee-jerk reaction to productions these days. It's very hard I find to be objective or not judge something until I see actual footage from it.

I'm bored to tears of mainstream movie advertising. If your poster isn't a moody looking protagonist's floating head it's a HDR'd to death montage of random shit.

The "Source Code" poster that was done recently by an artist was really great. Also the retro international posters for "Black Swan" were fantastic. This movie is supposed to be a period piece and taking place in the 60's...well they should be taking advantage of that.

And yet, before the internet, people had to rely on ads to judge whether they wanted to see a movie or not. I shouldn't have to do in depth research into a film to figure out if it looks good or not. That's what ads are supposed to be for.

Ironically, these posters have probably brought more attention the film by their perceived awfulness than any well-designed poster would have brought by being good :wtf:

Makes you wonder if Fox is shrewd enough to have made them bad on purpose to get all kinds of attention, and then they'll come out with good posters "because you, the fans, demanded it!" Seems like a win-win for Fox.

Sorry if this is old, but...

Director Matthew Vaughn told Entertainment Weekly that the 1960s setting makes this film like "X-Men meets [James] Bond, with a little bit of 'Thirteen Days' thrown in." It's clear in the trailer that the style of the '60s is everywhere in the movie, from the character's regular clothes to their X-Men uniforms, which copy the blue-and-yellow color scheme from the original comic books. Obviously, there is a lot of action in the movie, but Vaughn insists there's more to it than that. He said, "It's got a lot of teenage angst. The 'Twilight' girls will like it."
