Just ordered my new computer! Specs!

Danoz

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
MacBook Pro 13 inch'
2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

This will be my first Mac! I used one at my last job quite a bit, and after recommending them to so many people as personal computers I finally bought one for myself! Been using a Sony Vaio for the last four years as it slowly falls apart past warranty (bad fan, non-existent battery, broken CD drive, running Vista and an Ubuntu partition, etc. etc). It's served me well, but time for an upgrade!

What do you think of the above specs? I decided to go with the 13'' because I'd like smaller/lighter for travel and then plan on supplementing with a nice external screen when I can afford it.

Looking forward to this!!! :). Got Final Cut preinstalled too! :). Plan on doing photo editing and some limited video editing (nothing too intense, and the Adobe Suite seems to work just fine on a computer with a quarter of the specs so I think I'm safe!).

Dual core and 8GB of RAM? Interesting combination... personally I'd much rather have a quad core and only 4GB of RAM.

Yeah but for what I'm generally doing I won't notice it too much-- the 8 gigs will just be nice for the insane amount of multitasking I like to do. I don't really do any gaming or intense rendering anymore, and as often as I travel the 13'' works better (no quad core on the 13''). As Steve Jobs said about the 13'', "We chose killer graphics plus 10 hour battery life over a very small CPU speed increase. Users will see far more performance boost from the speedy graphics."

^^ You win! Oh, wait, there's no competition. Never mind.

Nice going, Danoz. I could use an upgrade soon myself. There's a couple of Machinima programs I want to play with that won't even run on my current laptop.

Nice, aren't they?! :D
MacBooks are great. While it wasn't a MacBook, when I got my (used) iMac a few years back, I was very impressed. I ended up giving it to a cousin who badly needed a computer, but it was a great, great machine. I hope in the near future I can purchase a new one.

Nice machine.

I've sworn my next laptop will have a solid state drive, but it's getting hard to wait. I'm using a 2007 laptop and SSD prices still haven't dropped enough to replace it yet.

Anyway, the point of the story is that a machine in your hand is worth a dozen in the bush. You're probably the smarter one here. Enjoy it!

I'm part way through building a new a computer for myself, but I've not yet gathered all the bits together that I need.

I've never made one from bits before, so this is new to me. There's a feeling of uncertainty as to whether the whole will work when it all comes together, even though it should.

I'm not confident this project will turn out how I want it to.

^ Good luck! I've always been afraid to do that. I usually end up buying my computers from small local businesses who build custom systems.

I got a new laptop for Christmas this year - i5 with 4GB RAM, 500 GB 7200rpm hard drive, 16' screen with an NVIDIA GeForce 360M video card. I'm happy.

Too bad there will almost certainly be new MacBook models out in the next 1-2 months.

That will always be true. There's always the 'next model' just around the corner. If you keep waiting for that, you'll never buy another machine again.

Exactly. Technology tends to move rapidly. I have a friend who laughs at my "quaint" 2006 era technology, but it works for me!

That is definitely my feeling as well. I can't afford to always "stay ahead of the curve," but you can be smart enough to get a model that will suit your needs for the next 3-4 years. I'm confident this computer will be just that. Also got a hell of an education discount from Apple Japan for being an English teacher! :)

I got my Macbook Pro 3 years ago and am still very, very happy with it. (15", 2.4 GHz, 4GB, 250GB.) Although I do envy my husband's Macbook Air for the solid state drive..

Still...MacBooks only get updated once or twice a year, and they're overdue. Now is not when I would buy one.

Then again, I see people buying old models at Future Shop for full price even when there's already new model out at the Apple store.

Any computer user with a tad of savvy should just order the parts and build a computer themselv- oh wait it's a Mac. Yeeeaaaah, can't do that then.

Sorry man, I'm just not a Mac guy.

You build your own laptops? If so, kudos to you. :techman:
