NFL Talk - 2010-11 Season

Jets should have tried an On-Side kick to recover it and go for the end-zone again for a TD, and a win. I'd really like to have seen them in the Super Bowl but looks like it'll be Pittsburgh and Green Bay. Go Green Bay!

The %age recovery rate for an expected onside kick is pretty poor, like less than 20% or something. Onside kicks usually only work when they're a surprise. Given the amount of time left, punting and hoping that your defense could stop Pittsburgh's offense, and you'd get one more possession top potentially win it may have been the option with the best chance of succeeding....given the information available at the time.

Still better than handing the ball over to the opponents, blowing all three of your time outs in one stretch and then letting them kneel out the game. At least they could say they tried but by kinging off they ensured the Steelers would hold control of the game, and On-Side may have failed but at least they could've said they tried.

Final is in, Green Bay v Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.

So, again, go Green Bay!

There's no consolation prize for "could've said they tried". IMHO, you go with whatever play maximizes your chances of victory. With three minutes left, I think you've got a better chance of holding Pittsburgh's offense to 3 and out (which would still give you enough time to potentially make the game winning drive) than you would of recovering the onside kick. At the very least, it's a close call.

Yeah, punting was the right call. It was their inability to stop the Steelers offense that ended it.

Stupid Jets.

Now we'll get two weeks of how Ben overcame "adversity" to get back to the Super Bowl.

I doubt it. If this thread is any example, there's still a lot of sensitivity about Roethlisberger. Plus, the announcers made it a point of mentioning how Steeler teammates respect what he's doing so far... but feel he has a loooooong way to go to really earn back any respect. Which imho is the right way to take it.

People are redeemable, even if they still must suffer consequences

What "consequences" has Roethlisberger suffered? The four game suspension? Not so much in the scheme of things if he really did what most think he did. He is a bulky meat head. Just not much rooting value. Not compared to Aaron Rodgers, at least.

I'm satisfied with how today went. Crybaby Jay turned out to be a bigger wuss than I initially gave him credit for and Rex Ryan wasn't given a reason to be even more obnoxious/ annoying than usual.

Man, you should read the yahoo message boards about Cutler. People are saying some pretty vicious stuff. Isn't it possible the guy had a torn ACL or something? I didn't see the injury happen as I was stuck with the "emergency" at work.

Man, it really amazes me sometimes, just how far people will go to criticize a guy.

Olin Kreutz (who is the first Bear to throw anyone under the bus when it's warranted) said that in the huddles leading up to the end of the second quarter, Cutler's leg was shaking almost uncontrollably and that he didn't think Cutler would finish the half (adding that he was "amazed" that Cutler started the second half). When asked if he felt that Cutler let the team down, Brian Urlacher (who is the second Bear to throw anyone under the bus when it's warranted) ended a postgame interview because he thought the idea was so ridiculous. In fact, the trainers took Cutler's helmet away from him when the team came out to start the second half, and he actually grabbed his helmet back to go out and play before the trainers got to Lovie and said "bench him." One of the Chicago Tribune beat writers is saying that the team believes he tore at least one and possibly two ligaments in his knee, and he's undergoing an MRI first thing in the morning tomorrow to confirm the extent of the damage.

It's not like the guy got sacked more than any other quarterback in the NFL thanks to his shittastic offensive line but kept on playing the entire season or anything. And it's not like you need your knees to play quarterback -- nope, just stand back there and throw. Jay Cutler's just a pussy, right?

I mean, I get that he's not the most likable player in the NFL. But to question his toughness is madness -- he was tough at Vanderbilt, he was tough in Denver, and he's been tough in Chicago, even though he's spent almost every snap for the last two seasons running for his life because the line is filled with a bunch of sad-sack, gutless assholes who wouldn't know the meaning of the term "pass protection" if it was tattooed on the tips of their pricks. I don't think people really grasp just how awful the Bears' line is. The team has utterly ignored the holes for the last several years, and every quarterback who has played for the team has had to worry about getting buried in turf every time they drop back to pass. Christ, though, some of the criticism of him (fans burning their Cutler jerseys? What the hell?) is insane. "How'd he hurt his knee? What a pussy." Oh, gee, I don't know. Getting tackled and hit a lot tends to increase one's risk of injury.

I'd listen to 670 The Score tomorrow at work, but I don't want to be liable for replacing my monitor after I punch a hole through it.

It looked to me like he was getting around pretty well, and there certainly didn't appear to be any real urgency for him to try and get back out there. If nothing else, that's the big thing that gets me- the apperance of it not really being all that bad and Cutler looking like he just didn't care about getting out there. The Bears weren't out of the game, and there's no reason to assume that the 3rd string guy was going to put on a good show, so why wouldn't Cutler want to be out there? At least show some frustration or try to help the other QB's or do something other than warming the bench up with a dumb look on your face. It certainly appeared to me like he bailed on his crew.

Yeah, that's why he fought off the trainers, who had to go to Lovie to get Cutler benched (per Zach Zaidman of The Score, who was on the sideline during the game and reported the "trainers took his helmet / Cutler took the helmet back / trainers had him benched" story). What a fuckin' quitter, man.

Latest update is that the team is now almost positive his MCL is torn, and they believe there's a good chance the ACL is out, too.

Also, because Hanie was the emergency quarterback and not on the game's active roster (Cutler and Collins were the only active quarterbacks), as soon as he was activated and entered the game, Cutler couldn't re-enter the game, even if he had been able to do so.

I hope they're torn. They're ripping him a new one on yahoo, asking how he could stand up if his knee was really hurt, saying the real problem was that his uterus is torn; the vitriol and macho posturing got much worse from there. The consensus, with few exceptions, is that he was faking. i didn't see it so I haven't formed an opinion as to what happened. Can you walk around unassisted without crutches if your MCL or ACL is torn?

All of which was pointed out during the game.... er, wait, no it wasn't. That sucks that he did get seriously hurt, but all of my knowledge from what was going on came from what I saw during the game, and all that pointed towards Cutler packing it in for the day. Had I known this stuff prior, yeah, I probably wouldn't have been posting what I did. But I didn't, and based on what I saw/ heard, he did look like a fuckin' quitter, man.

Oh my GOD. It finally hit me who Aaron Rodgers looks like. It's been driving me f-ing bonkers all season long and it finally hit me looking at his picture on yahoo.

His face. His mannerisms. He looks exactly like Howard Wolowitz from "The Big Bang Theory."

The knee is a pretty complex construct, so, yes, especially immediately after a tear (before all the really bad swelling kicks in). You can't exactly plant and twist or make cuts, though.
