Movies you love but others hate.

Starship Troopers!

What the director intended and how audiences interpret the movie are usually completely different. But whether it is a Nazi-like propaganda movie or a huge budget brainless action movie I like it.

Return of the Jedi

Ewoks and all I'd rate it as a tie with ANH as my favourite Star Wars film. People seem to go into almost psychotic rants if you don't list ESB as your favourite/the best and don't decry RotJ as the worst thing in film...until the prequels came along.

Star Trek Nemesis.
I only came to it on DVD, but it (and the Xindi mission in Enterprise) got me loving Star Trek again. I was somewhat suprised to discover it's cancerous reputation when I came here.

Also: X-Men III, the Matrix sequels and loads more that refuse to come to mind at the mo.

^For me, it's not so much that Nemisis was bad, it's just that its pace makes ST:TMP look like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

YES! I love Starship Troopers. And I didn't know that it was poo-poo'd by the masses.

I enjoyed The Village quite a bit. I didn't really understand why everyone thought it was such a drop in quality from M. Night's previous movies. Although I guessed the twist before it happened, it was still very entertaining to watch.

I also like the Jim Carrey version of The Grinch, better than the original in fact. The original is great for its nostalgia factor but besides that I always found it the least entertaining of the Christmas classics. The Jim Carrey version, however, held my interest much better. I wouldn't say it is one of his funniest movies, but it had a great cast and the set looked beautiful. I just find it more fun to watch.

Well, whenever I turn it on(and it is on constant play on the movie channels) any friends or family nearby start groaning about it.

Mmm, I need new friends.

Tomorrow Never Dies is one of the best Bond films yet, inexplicably, is widely considered to be one of the worst. Let us count the ways in which the film is awesome:

- Brosnan is superlative as Bond, offering a far more polished performance than he did in Goldeneye.
- Great chicks, from the Norwegian(?) blonde at Oxford to Paris Carver to Wai Lin.
- Paris Carver continues the trend of a more self-aware Bond (and franchise) which started in Goldeneye: Paris: "Did I get too close?" Bond: "Yes."
- Wai Lin is Bond's equal in every way - far moreso than whatsherface in The Spy Who Loved Me - a true 21st century Bond Girl.
- Great settings and use thereof: Germany and Vietnam.
- Great opening sequence. Snow. Cooperation between Russia/UK in action against terrorists. Cruise missiles. "What the hell is he doing?" "His job!"
- Great tweaking of the American audience: "I wonder what the Americans will be more upset about: that they lost it or that we found it."
- CHINA. Tomorrow Never Dies recognises the rise of the Middle Kingdom well before CNN catches on. True to past form re: Russia - and commendably for a western production - China isn't made the bad guy. (Wai Lin of course being a Chinese agent).
- THE POWER AND AMORALITY OF THE MEDIA. Today folks are talking about the way in which the entertainment-focussed media has been inflaming political discourse in the United States for its own benefit with tragic consequences. Tomorrow Never Dies was there first.
- Dr. Kaufmann: "I assure you Mr. Bond, I could shoot you from Stuggart and still create ze proper effect!"
- Great car sequence and related material: "Don't let her push you around."
- Great scenes with M and Moneypenny: "You'll just have to decide how much pumping is needed, James."
- The 'Stealth Ship' and naval action. The ship could almost be real (see: US Navy project 'Sea Shadow').
- Great motorcycle sequence in Saigon.
- I liked Sheryl Crowe's song even if nobody else did.

I'm probably missing some stuff but that'll do for the moment.

It also has a cameo appearance by Ed Winchester from The Fast Show. :bolian:

Cabin Boy and Tomorrow Never Dies are two great flicks.

I'll throw one into the ring that is pretty well hated here: "The Phantom Menace."

Well, I wouldn't call it a great movie, but it is a much different Star Wars movie than any of the other ones and I like the slowish pace. I think that it world builds really well, has a great soundtrack, has good performances by most of leads (and some terrible ones by the rest) and has a really smaller story. It isn't about Empires and Death Stars, but about a simple trade dispute that turned into the occupation of a single planet. A lot of the reasons why people don't like the move (the small stakes, Jar-Jar) I find quite charming.

It also has the single best Lightsaber battle in all six movies.

I've never read anything good about "Pay It Forward." But I love that movie, and more than that, I was inspired by it. Yes, the ending is so sad, but to me that just says, Pay It Forward Anyway. I'm used to getting roundly mocked for loving this film.

Another fan of The Village here. It kinda loses its way in the last act (post reveal) and you're just waiting for it to end, but the setup and atmosphere are brilliant. I also confess a sympathy for the idea of attempting to escape from the evil in this world and thereby an appreciation of the tragedy which befalls the village.

Lost in space

The Wedding Singer

Fade to Black

Pennies from Heaven [1981]

Not Oscar winners by any degree but but rather underrated I always thought.

It was a shame that the movie was advertised/promoted the way it was. People went into the theaters thinking they were going to see a horror movie, so naturally they came out disappointed.

I highlighted your last sentence because...well...YES.

The sacrifices made by the characters bring me to tears.

When i saw the movie for the first time and the big reveal was made i simply could not wrap my head around it. It literally took me a few minutes to comprehend what i had just seen. I actually said, "What the fuck?!?!?!?" aloud.

How i love this movie.

Far Cry. It is a solid action flick with some humor and romance thrown in, is lighthearted and doesn't take itself seriously. Many people trash it for the simple fact that Uwe Boll directed it, and just that. He bought the rights and did his own thing with it, enraging fanboys of the game because he didn't pander to them and turn it into a fan-wankfest. The movie sticks quite close to the basic plot of the game but is original enough to be an entertaining flick in its own right.
