Star Trek: Online

Cryptic does not run City of heroes, City of Villains or City of Rogues. It hasn't had anything to do with the COx titles in years.

Oh, that's right - my bad - forgot they sold those titles off a bit ago. Well, whatever. STO will be free to play before the year is up.

Welcome to my don't give a shit list.

If it were trolling, I would have stopped a while ago - I seem to have already gotten the vapid fanboys in a frothy frenzy about it without any effort.

OK everyone lets cool down.

The use of "fanboy" is not acceptable. Please debate without resorting to name calling. Aeolusdallas has already added Bishop76 to their ignore list. That is what the ignore list is for.

I think that trolling isn't happening here but is getting really close. Please tone things down guys.

Remember the addage about lies; "there lies, damned lies and then there's statistics." You shouldn't fight over figures that aren't and will never be publicly released by the game developers.

Any more sniping from this point forward on this subject matter will be met with a warning.

You guys think yourself lucky, the big sleeping dragon merely opened one eye slightly to see what was happening, if you had awakened him fully you would have known all about it.:lol:

Daedlus knows i mean that in a nice way.:)

Anyway in my few months rest from ST online i see i need to update by almost 3 gigs......what the hell, is this a new game.

It was a huge download coming back to it, for sure.

So far there have been some positive changes. I like the mini game associated with collection of the samples, I like that you have a really long run countdown timer on ground missions, making those go at least a little faster because they still seem to be pretty dull. The space missions are as good as they always were. It seems like they've rewritten some of the text and it's an improvement, but they still have some really badly written stuff in there that seems like they pretty much pulled their writers from their programmer pool.

I'm still pretty early in the game at a mid Lt range, so I'll keep going at it for a while longer to make sure I get to experience everything again.

Question for everyone - is the user generated content worth checking out or is it mostly garbage?

It's starting to feel like it lately, and with the stuff they're currently working on it's going to be even more so. Especially if the ground combat changes they're trying out work out; the days of "select target, press 1 over and over, press 2 occasionally" will be over, you'll be using your mouse to aim and fire. If it works out.

The crafting has taken the first step toward the new model, the most-needed changes to the Exchange have made it actually useful, and it's actually possible to play a Klingon without having to choose solely between PvP and mind-numbing boredom. Mind you, you'll still have hefty leavening of boredom in the Klingon side, but at least it's not the only alternative.

Sure. From Dan Stahl, the Executive Producer, and one of the people who would initiate making any decision about going F2P if it was planned:

Cryptic is happy to announce that Champions Online is going free to play, but the first question in your mind might be "What does this mean for STO players?"

There are no plans to change STO's subscription model.

"You say no plans now, but what about later," you ask?

If I could travel forward in time and then pull a slingshot maneuver to come back and tell you what the future holds for STO, I’d do it. But in the absence of time-travel, Star Trek Online continues as a subscription based game with a ton of updates scheduled for Season 3, 4, and well beyond.

So for now, the announcement doesn’t impact STO. The team remains entirely focused on delivering continuous quality content and developing the features you want to see in the game. The STO Season 3 release and Foundry mission authoring tools are just a month away!

That doesn't mean we’re going to stop watching or talking about what Champs is doing. Champions Online is a really fun game and I personally think this will be an awesome switch for them. We’re big fans of this bold move and I can’t wait to see what an impact it makes.

Now that you've heard all this, I'm interested in what you think. What is your take on all this free-to-play stuff?

It's no more likely to go F2P than WoW is. Could it some day? Sure. And, as WoW devs said, so could WoW. But nobody has any plans for it to currently, and the reason for that is, it's making money in excess of what Atari expected, and growing in subs. The above was posted in October, but it's as true now as then, based on more recent statements.

I'm sure the dude who posted that article is ignoring me already, but again we have an instance of the company that produces the game talking about how the game isn't going free to play. Also, an instance that's 3 months old.

I don't think a game going free to play is an indication of failure, it's just a different way of going about charging for a game that may not have the best of subscription numbers and I think Crypic will very shortly make the game F2P.

Look at Guild Wars. They're successful and they haven't charged a subscription fee from day 1.

IIRC unlike many Free2Play games Guild Wars still requires people to at least buy a copy of the game.

Personally I'm more looking forward to Fallout:Online, although that seems to have become the Duke Nukem Forever of the MMORPG world.

That's correct - you do have to buy the Guild Wars game to play it, but it's going for like $20 for the whole thing at this point.

I'm skeptical about Fallout Online, but I'd be interesting to see what comes of it if, as you pointed out, anything.

I'd liek STO to be free to play and wouldn't mind paying $40 for a proper install copy as long as it was possible to "complete" it without shelling out for minor upgrades and that you could 'win' if you had enough skill to beat the other players/computer. Even paying for the number of minutes you use would be good - sometimes its impossible to play games some weeks due to life/work etc.

you'll be using your mouse to aim and fire. If it works out.

Oh, god, PLEASE no... I have enough problems with ground combat as it is, mouse-controlled aim-and-fire would actually make it unplayable with my eyesight. :(

I'd mainly like to play it because the games in the Fallout universe actually tell a funny and entertaining story with tons of optional side stories, unlike most RPGs which mainly boil down to monotonous grindfests (especially most Asian MMORPGs).
If I want hours of monotonous "more of the same" I'll watch a political discussion on TV. That's free and doesn't waste any space on my computer.

The last time I played it (two months ago) ground combat was still a pain because NPCs constantly ran into my line of fire. Did they finally fix this to is manual aiming their attempt to do so?

Oh yeah, the Fallout writing has always been excellent since the first game and I do enjoy having all the options they present. I wasn't the biggest fan of Fallout 3 and didn't play New Vegas, but I watched a buddy play for a bit and it was neat enough, but sometimes in my opinion, story suffers when you get too much of an open world to explore. Either way, I'd love to see the Fallout MMO get made and see what comes of it.

I've been playing STO again the past couple days for the first time in 3 or 4 months and ground combat is still garbage.
