I'm a little new to these message boards and a little new to star trek. I've noticed something though that has me thinking. I'm not trying to offend anyone but does the federation seem a little segragated?

I mean it seems to only have one token black person on each show. It seems like the old south to me. Black servants and what not. This is not mentioned to offend any1 and is a serious question.

This makes me laugh. It would seem you have never watched the shows.

See The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air there is a good example of a token person in that. If they were making fun of the issue well that is under some debate.

They should have made it more black friendly like star wars. At least their black character owned a city.

There was also a 'black' captain. Oh frankly, I'd hate to use that term and differentiate a "white person" from a "black person".

Besides, as Gene said of bald people, he can also say for "blacks": "By the 24th century, no one will care."

I think we all oughta drop the matter, because it doesn't matter. So what if there's a somewhat lower proportion of "blacks" in Star Trek? There's probably as many "black people" as there are British, Mexican, Russian, etc, etc. There's also an extremely small percentage of Asians and other various relatively major cultures, but is that worth complaining about either?

Also remember that Star Trek is a sort of representation of a United Earth, rather than an Earth where people are still being separated and identified by culture, race, or color. It's as ridiculous as doing so with people who have different hair colors or by the pants they like to wear.

Yes, people of different species are still being treated differently at this time, but that a difference in species, not only minor aesthetic differences.

I don't mind "black"...

"African-American" is okay...

Once we start to get into the various forms of the 'n' word...then, we're in trouble.;)

Ah, "blacks" will have the same rights as bald people by the 24th century...;)

Got it.

But...there are "black" people who are British, Mexican, and Russian; and, there is only a small percentage of Asians since it is 'written' to be a small percentage. (Lest we forget that ST was written in the 20th century...where Asians are under-represented on television, save for Asian females who usually play the girlfriend/wife for the white male hero).

As aforementioned, ST is also a television show....written in the 20th century.

The Enterprise-D had one black-man as part of the main crew. (Worf, while played by a black himan, was not "black" in the terms we think of it as who knows what skin-colors with Klingons "really are" or even mean.) But plenty of black extras, back ground characters and secondary characters were seen. If we do include aliens both Worf and Guinan were played by black actors.

So, no. The Federation wasn't "segregated" in the least. Such a question is patently stupid to make. Were this TNZ I'd open this thread up to thread bombing as the OP is that.... "out of line."

Instead I'm just going to say:

"lol.... wut."

Wow, just wow. I actually opened this thread thinking it would be about the possible segregation within Starfleet between the various species of the Federation (the Enterprise being crewed primarily by Humans, other starships by Vulcans etc.) and instead got this :wtf:.

One thing I don't get is the lack of Hispanic actors/actresses in Trek. Considering Hispanics outnumber blacks in the US, oh the travesty!!! lol.. Eeek....Roddenberry hated Latinos, as did Berman and Braga. There was a black actor in ALL the main cast of every series, but only Beltran and Dawson in ONE show!!

But we did get Ricardo Montalban as the most famous Trek villain of all time and Barbara Luna as one of the sexiest.
