Starfleet Museum Orbital Annexe - WIP from a modelling newbie!

OK played with the textures and raised the resolution but there's still an element of fuzz to the writing, though I'm pleased with the plating effect. I suspect the fuzz looks worse than it is because the images seem to have been compressed? They look clearer direct from the hard-drive!

Main body next.

this is coming along nicely! are you learning lots?

I'm still a little threatened by 3D, that and I'm running a netbook, which needless to say is woefully inadequate for this purpose.

I have arranged a test of Graphisoft ArchiCAD through a colleague, apparently its a $30,000 program so I'll let you all know if it does Trek stuff well.

I actually learned quite a bit by downloading other models and seeing how they were constructed. I'm working in 3ds MAX so I don't really know how a CAD prog would compare but good luck mate! The feeling of watcjing your own creation come to life is good :)

Looking good, but there's a couple of texture suggestions that I've got...

The wide red stripes, and the HUGE lettering is making it look kid of small, you know? You might think about making the lines thinner, and instead of having it say "Starfleet Command" on bot sides really large, have it smaller, but maybe in more places around the outside, maybe 4, or even 6. That would make it look bigger, I think. :)

Plus it might solve some of the fuzz issues. I'm not using alpha maps for the logos at the moment so I'll try that as well (Its all one texture).

I know I know, I'm learning!! :)

There's no one right way to do these things, much of your time in 3D is spent trying to figure out the best or most economic way to do what you want. You can use alpha maps, all in one texture maps, separate texture areas or (worst of all) actually model the writing into the surface.

Yeah, I usually try to limit mine to one color map, and one spec map... to keep it easy. :) No sense in making it overly complicated, you know? Of course, that's per object, and I like to have lots of objects.... :)

Ok new textures taking shape. Still a great deal of work to do but it's getting to a stage where I'm seeing what I intended now!

Obviously the viewing galleries won't have windows in the floors

They're just place holders to give an idea! Still to retexture the lower saucer, add and texture a few more greebles, etc etc.

Comments as always appreciated.

Looking better each time. When you finally get your windows on there it will have a real sense of scale.

Just as an idea, the lower gallery is approx 5 decks deep with panoramic viewing windows on four decks (the fifth being engineering/maint space inbetween). Also contains a mall with cafes, shops, etc.

The Upper Gallery is two decks, but purely a viewing area with occasional seating areas.

Thanks Kenny

Had a short break from the modelling as can't concentrate properly, but for all those planning a visit to the museum, here's your PADD!

(Oh, and the proper Starbase Legacy (for that is it's name now!) logo!)

I suppose I should have known from your location, but that spelling of "annex"/"annexe" just made it blindingly obvious that you're British! :D Nice work though! I like the inclusion of all the historical emblems.

Looking good. It looks bigger already, with just the way you tweaked the lettering, and stripes and stuff.

:)

Here here old boy! Pip pip what? :guffaw:

Had to include the emblems as it's a museum.

Thanks MM, and feeling much happier because of it! :bolian:

Is there a recommended way to create (texture) windows? I'm definitely NOT gonna cut them :rommie:

Well, in Blender, you can map a texture to the "emit" channel... but the image is going to have to be pretty high res for it to look good, that way. I'd always recommend cutting them out, but on a mesh of that scale, that's alot of booleans. :)

In lightwave it's a window texture in the luminosity channel, with exactly the same proviso. If it's not a hi res texture it will soon become obvious.

My God! It's full of stars!

Be gentle! I got my first set of windows on! Woohoo!

Yes, there's too many (some will be turned off!), yes they're still too bright (under review!) and yes they highlight where I;ve made those extrusions on the saucer too prominent (will be fixed!) but I'm getting happier by the minute! :bolian:
