Doctor Who night on Craig Ferguson Late Tue/Early Wed

Was it my imagination, or did Matt Smith throw open the door to the possibility that he's not back in 2012? On the one hand, he brought up that Tom Baker played the Doctor for seven years, but his whole body language changed when Craig asked him about his own future on the program.

People who tend to know what they're talking about have suggested that the real reason for splitting next year into two series is to allow him to fulfill his three series contract in two years.

^^ What is it with Doctor Who and turnover? Most American shows you'd get at least five seasons out of the principal cast but on Doctor Who three is a long tenure.

I don't know. I think there's a certain fear of typecasting, not to mention that for a lot of British actors the dream is to make it in the US so they leave to pursue other options (very few US stars quit succesful series to crack Britain unfortunately ;))

I think as well many actors are mindful of the fact that Tom probably stayed in the part far too long. That said we have no idea how long Colin or Sly might have chosen to stay if given the choice.

This notion of Series 6 being split into 6 and 7 to fulfuil Matt's contractual obligations seems odd. I mean I can see it working for Matt if he wants to move on to bigger and better things, but what, pray tell, would be in it for the BBC/Moffat?

If this is the case (and I really hope not) then it adds fuel to the fire that says get an older actor next time for whom Who might be the pinacle of a career rather than a stepping stone to something else.

When I expressed that thought when the season split was announced, I was told to shut my mouth. :)

I do find it telling that the Season 6 writer list from the other thread only goes through episode 7.

I don't doubt its feasible, I just don't see what the Beeb would be getting out of it

Also if it is true they're gonna have to start casting for the 12th Doctor pretty soon and I doubt they can keep that quiet.

Let's face it, there's no way there're not going to take the opportunity to sell two overpriced "Complete Series" box sets next year. And by all accounts it was 2Entertain who had the final say in calling this year's series, Series Five as opposed to (the much derrided) Series One.

That doesn't surprise me; they're the ones with the most investment in the label that is attached to the season. "The Complete Fifth Series" makes the most sense for them. They don't want potential buyers in shops confused about which product they're getting.

There are also rumors that Moffat will leave in 2012 as well, to move on to other projects. So if they are planning to leave there will probably be some form of announcement next year to that effect.

There's of course always speculation about the next Doctor, but what about the producer? Mark Gatiss perhaps? Sure some of his new Who scripts have been so-so but he's a capable producer with a fairly long Who history.

Hmm, I'm kind of half and half when it comes to Gatiss. As you say his Who scripts haven't been brilliant (the Unquiet Dead is the only good one) but other stuff he's written has been top drawer; take Sherlock, although one never knows how much input Moffat had into his episode (though maybe it was vice versa for all I know)

Chris Chibnal for the next show runner anyone? ;)

I hope the 2012 rumour is a myth, I'd like Moffat to be in charge at least 3/4 years personally. While the classic series occasionally left a show runner in place too long (face it even JNT admitted this but nobody else wanted the job) I think chopping and changing every couple of years can be just as damaging (especially if everyone of them demands a new TARDIS :guffaw: )

The eleventh doctor spin. Matt occasionally does this gesture in "Vampires of Venice" and "The Pandorica Opens"

Thing is he has a young family, so you can understand if he doesn't want to spend too many years regularly apart from them.

As much as I wouldn't want to see him get the job I'd say Gatiss is a shoo-in to replace him when he goes.

Does anyone know if the skit they did but couldn't show (stupid music rights!) has leaked on to the internet yet?

I think the funniest part was when the host called the Dalek an esperoo machine, not sure what the horse had to do with anything but that is most likely an in-joke.
