Steven Spielberg is set to direct Robopocalypse, it was announced today by Mark Sourian and Holly Bario, Co-Presidents of Production for DreamWorks Studios. Based on the novel of the same name by Daniel H. Wilson, Spielberg will begin principal photography on the futuristic tale in January 2012. Disney's Touchstone will distribute the film in 2013.

Exploring the fate of the human race following a robot uprising, Robopocalypse has been adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard.

Oh my. What a silly movie title!:rommie:

I thought it said Robocopalypse, a Robocop sequel/remake. I was imagining a bunch of Robocops gone mad and the one true Robocop has to stop them. Which actually sounds good if done right. IMO

:cardie:

That's how I read it initially, and didn't realize my mistake until now!

Man, does this sound dumb. Did Munich destroy his appetite for any more serious movies, ever?

what happened to his Abraham Lincoln project? is that still being made or was it dumped?

Is Spielberg really going to direct this? Every year, there's always some announcement that he's going to direct a film and he never does. I believe it when I see it.

Well Ebert will be giving this a thumbs down, with his line of reasoning being "why did the director who made a movie about a nice robot boy make a movie about robot wars," which is what happened when Ebert tried to compare War of the Worlds to E.T.

Sounds like a potential Matrix prequel. I hope Keanu is not involved.

But I agree, the title sounds pretty silly.

Spielberg directing a sci-fi movie? Awesome. In that genre, he's been extremely successful. How can anyone not be excited about the man who directed Close Encounters, E.T., Jurassic Park, A.I., Minority Report, and War of the Worlds, directing a big-budget post-apocalypse movie? The only mediocre sf movie he's ever made is Lost World. Not a bad track record at all.

Oh, and the title? It's awful. And yes, I think, even though it's based on a book, they should change the title. (A.I. was not the title of the original short story it was based on; Blade Runner is not the title of its source material - why not change the title?)

Is why.

Spielberg doing a sci-fi movie: win.
Pretty much anyone doing yet another movie about robots and apocalypses: almost certain not win.

Roboapocolypse is indeed based on a book and a really hot spec that I believe sold for big money earlier this year. Steven is attached to multiple projects though so who knows when this will come out, I assume that he'll want to go into production on this after he's all finished with "War Horse".
