Larry Hagman, the actor who played filthy rich J.R. Ewing on the 1980s show "Dallas," is about to collect a whopping $11 billion"(actually million, journalism has went to hell in a handbasket) from Citigroup, after a federal panel ruled the bank's investment arm engaged in "serious misconduct" while managing his money.

The 79-year-old actor, who also played Maj. Anthony Nelson on "I Dream of Jeanie," was awarded $10 million in punitive damages that Citi must pay to charities selected by Hagman, $1.1 million in compensatory damages and nearly $440,000 in legal fees.

Hagman had requested $1.35 million in damages, Reuters reported. He could not be reached for comment.

Hagman accused Citi in May 2009 of a breach of fiduciary duty and breach of contract, fraud by misrepresentation and omission, failure to supervise and violation of federal and state law, according to the ruling by an arbitration panel of FINRA, a self-regulatory body of the U.S. financial industry.

Thoughts?

And as usual, Bobby will wind up cleaning up the mess, but not before Pam rips J.R. a new one over dinner with the family.

All the money in the world won't bring back Cousin Jamie.

I miss the supersoaps like Dallas and Dynasty (Dallas was always my favourite though). The combination of glamorous lifestyles and conniving skullduggery was total win. I remember dad would always aim to finish his operating list in time to get home for Dallas and my making sure to finish my homework in time to watch it with him and my mother.

Happy days, watching other people suffer gloriously... everything I needed to know about life, I learnt from JR Ewing. :D

^Yeah, but you have to remember that supreme happiness required JR to be behind the glorious suffering in some shady, underhanded way. If I knew him, I would have shot him myself, though I'd make damned sure I hit him more than just once.

Didn't he end up getting shot, like 5 times, over the course of the series? The dude must have been made of kevlar.

Dallas was good up until the Pam dream season. Then I lost interest. I'm curious how many fans are skipping that season when buying them on DVD.

I disagree. The range war with George Kennedy in '88, '89 was pretty awesome stuff. Too, the whole storyline with JR funding American paramilitary terrorists to blow up Saudi oil rigs (so Ewing Oil's would become more valuable) was rather James Bondian in scope and effect, I thought.

I'm an unabashed fan of the show myself; used to stay up after Dukes of Hazzard to watch Dallas and Falcon Crest with mom and dad when I was a kid. I just saw on Amazon also that the final season of Dallas will be released on DVD in January. No word on any of the three TV movies though ...

Mine too. I couldn't stand Dynasty at all. Dallas was the better show, with both better actors, and better characters. The only problem with it was that it ran three years too long. If it had ended in 1988 it would have been better. By then, the original cast was more or less gone, and the new people just weren't as interesting.

No. Just a few weeks ago it was announced that TNT had ordered a pilot be written and both Hagman and Patrick Duffy have reportedly been approached about appearing in this new, continuation of the TV series following John Ross and Christopher Ewing.

EDIT: Deadline Hollywood reported on it September 8th:

DALLAS – Executive producer Cynthia Cidre, writer of the acclaimed film The Mambo Kings and creator/executive producer of the TV series Cane, has crafted an update of the long-running series about the Ewings of Southfork, whose betrayals, jealousies and passions have made them famous. The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance. This project, based upon the iconic series created by David Jacobs, comes to TNT from Warner Horizon Television.

I wasn't a huge fan of Dallas-- I mainly taped it to have something to talk about with my Grandmother and my Mother-- and, later, to ogle my girl Jenilee-- but it does make me happy that they are going with a continuation rather than a reboot.

Yeah, I really like that storyline, though I wish he managed to pull it off; that would have been really awesome.

Wow.

I hate no idea this was going to happen. Hope it works out! The concept is solid, and if they can get JR and Bobby cameos at least...

Didn't the banks mismanage a lot of people into the poorhouse? Why is the rich actor the one getting paid back?
