Series 6 To Shoot In The US!

^^ I have to admit the Doctor does have a history with military bases and secret projects and so on (again see: Dalek). I hope they are able to really do something that feels unique to America. If they're going to go on location they should really get the most out of it.

I like the fact that BBC America has already produced a promo teaser; this is clearly a very big deal for them. :)

I wish it didn't use Tennant-era graphics, though.

I agree, but what the hell is in Utah?

The article mentions the Oval Office. I wonder if they'll do any DC establishing shots.

Uh, you saw my links above, right? Hill AFB and Dugway are both in Utah.

In addition to those, other military related places in Utah:

Are any of those places visually distinct enough to justify moving the filming there?

A visit to the Oval Office eh? Sounds uncomfortably like Victory of the Daleks pt 2!

Don't tell me Nixon has the Doctor's phone number as well (though could be Johnson also, 'late sixties' isn't overly specific).

I'm not sure I like the Doctor being at history's beck and call, I prefer the accidental landing in the middle of something we most often get. Still being called up by Churchill or Nixon has somewhat more gravitas than being rung up by Marfa Jones!

Agreed. The Doctor is not a superhero or a cop. It's not his responsibility to come running everytime someone calls. I prefer it when he just wanders... :techman:

One of the Spoiler Hints from the Brilliant Book Of DW mentioned Apollo 10.5 which would be a US 1960's set story. Presumably it gets launched from a secret site in the Utah Desert.
Historically, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California would fill that role; they had a full space launch facility, including facilities for manned flight, and many military satellites were launched from there. Why create a fictional launch facility when there's a perfectly good real facility? :)

So you film at a cheaper location with good rebates, and set it in the real facility if you want.

Just cos it's shooting in Utah doesn't mean it's set there, of course,

Good point. After seeing the BBC America promo (with the TARDIS crashing into Texas), it occurred to me that the story could be primarily set in Texas, which is where NASA's headquarters are, assuming that the "Apollo 10.5" bit from the Brilliant Book is a genuine spoiler.

I've wondered if they may also trek out to Hollywood. If they're filming a scene (or scenes) in the Oval Office, why build a set when there are perfectly good standing White House sets in Hollywood? Like for The Event, for instance. It would be cheaper to rent a set for a day's filming than it would be to build the set.

Good call, and from my, admittedly non US background, it's my understanding that the appointments of the Oval Office haven't changed that much so standing sets now could quite easily be tweaked to represent the late 60s.

Yup, and if he's that easy to call then it makes a bit of a mockery of the character. I mean why can't he help defeat Hitler? Can he only help when aliens are invovled?

Yeah, so much for being the mysterious traveller who comes, saves the day, and quietly disappears. Now he's on every notable bugger's speed dial.

For one good example of the same Oval Office set used for two different periods at the same time, Oliver Stone's Nixon and Rob Reiner's The American President used the same set; one filmed during the day, the other at night.

I wonder if the Doctor is actually summoned to the White House or if he just ends up there of his own accord? I'd prefer the latter...

Oh, it's not fictional at all. It just isn't public knowledge yet! ;)
