MLB Talk - 2010 Season

I saw a game at Coors back in the day, Rockies-Phillies. It was 10-0 for one team (don't recall anymore who) then suddenly it was 10-9. It's like watching a pinball game there.

^^ Yeah, a lot of crazy games back in the day. The humidor helps quite a bit, but every once in a while it seems like they 'forget' and use non-humidor balls.

So Nyjer Morgan of the Nationals was suspended seven games for throwing a ball at a fan in Philadelphia. This seemed to come out of nowhere when the suspension was announced since nothing was written about it and there's no video footage of it. Allegedly he was having a heated exchange with one fan, threw the ball at him and hit someone else. And MLB is insistent that it's not the typical "tossing the ball into the stands at the end of the inning."

Ouch. Stephen Strasburg needs Tommy John surgery.

Sorry, Nationals fans. :(

I feel badly for the pitcher. It's the baseball equivalent of what happened to that poor guy Avery on the Rams last night.

But, I hope all those media members who had already annointed him to multiple all star games, Cy Young awards, and a place in Cooperstown go eat a fat dick.

Yankees had a great night tonight (12-9 over White Sox), but I have a question:

The fan who caught Eduardo Nunez's home run was being led away by security guards. Anyone know why? He wasn't starting trouble or anything like that. And none of the announcers said anything that might have given a reason. All they said was that the fan had the good sense not to throw the ball back. So why did the guards haul him away?

My guess is so that they could make a deal for the ball. In the post game the announcers said something about a deal being made since it was Eduardo's first big league home run. The ball for some Jeter memorabilia.

^ Hmmm. Yeah, that's what they're saying on the MLB message boards. It just looked a bit ominous...we certainly didn't see a fight breaking out, and Michael Kay's comment about the fan not throwing the ball back should be considered as well.

Edit: I checked the archived game at MLB.TV - it was a White Sox fan who caught the ball. And the fan DID NOT THROW IT BACK! I just assumed that it was a tradition throughout all of baseball, regardless of where you are (i.e. which ballpark), that you always throw back any HR that the enemy team hits to you. Guess I was wrong about that...

And what's weird is, all the fan wanted in return for giving the ball back, was another ball - autographed by Jeter. Why would a White Sox fan want that?

I haven't been following this season...but both my Indians & Nationals suck. :sigh:

Today was good...but standings wise they are both last in their divisions. :(

I wouldn't mind having a signed Jeter ball. I'm not a Yankees fan, but I can't help but admit he's a great player. It'd be a nice souvenir to take away.

And I don't think many teams throw the ball back onto the field. I know the Cubs and Twins do it, but can't think of any others off the top of my head.

My condolences regarding Stephen Strasburg. I thought it was overhyped, but no fanbase deserves to hear the news of a rookie phenom having to undergo Tommy John Surgery.

They were getting more than double the typical attendance anytime he started. It blows for the team in a lot of ways. Sounds like he really snapped it on that one throw.

Indeed. It's always nice having an autographed ball of a possible hall of famer. I would go as far as saying that I wouldn't mind having an autographed ball from any player in the league, even if they are bench-warmers

It usually only happens in heated rivalries or really close games. The ball usually doesn't get tossed back at Yankee stadium unless it's a Boston/NY game or if it's really close

There's no way I'd throw a ball back. I've been going to games for years and never caught a foul ball, homer, or anything.

Plus it's just so classless to throw it back.
