Is Oliver Stone losing it, or did he ever have it?

Lately he's been praising Chavez and Ahmadinejad, and said that the US should nationalize the entire oil industry (and what, put Dick Cheney in charge of it?).

But check out his latest

Director Oliver Stone belittled the Holocaust during a shocking interview with the Sunday Times today, claiming that America's focus on the Jewish massacre was a product of the "Jewish domination of the media."

The director also defended Hitler and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and railed against the "powerful lobby" of Jews in America.

Stone said that his upcoming Showtime documentary series "Secret History of America," seeks to put Hitler and Communist dictator Joseph Stalin "in context."

"Hitler was a Frankenstein but there was also a Dr Frankenstein. German industrialists, the Americans and the British. He had a lot of support,"

I think he's well past his expiration date. Maybe he and Mel Gibson can team up for a movie about how Hitler was just a sock puppet for greedy Jewish bankers.

I'm one of the few who has never been sure he ever had it. He's done some good work, but some of it has been very :wtf:

Checked out the link. It's one of those freak shows for pinheads, a fake news web site. You can't believe anythng those scumbags say. Kudos to Stone for excellent taste in enemies.

He's lost it, and he's a frakking idiot full of bitterness and bile. I've flushed things down the toilet that had more class than the shit he makes and calls films.

He wrote the script for 1983's Scarface and he directed the 1986 Vietnam movie Platoon which is probably in my top 20 favourites. So yes, back in the 80s he did 'have it' - anybody who wrote the Montana character into the 80s cocaine culture has to have had talent.

But then he just gradually declined...that can happen sometimes to directors. Some mature gracefully, others just burn out and never make good films ever again. Francis Ford Coppola suffered mentally from making Apocalypse Now...and has never revisited his 1970s heyday which is when he made downright awesome movies; infact he ended up making movies that were very bad indeed...a complete turnaround.

Back to Stone, if you want an epitome of his decline it'd have to be Alexander. It was released a few years ago and sprang to mind as I saw this topic...a big budget, very ambitious, massively marketed ostensible 'epic'...but it was just a somewhat below average film with no memorable dialogue, scenes or traits at all - mediocre. Nobody talks about it any more, and it'll be consigned to a mildly embarassing basement along other expensive white elephant Hollywood backed non-starters.

Hrm. How do you explain these?

After remarking in the interview that “Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people, 25 or 30 [million],” Stone went into conspiracy mode with the assertion that "Jewish domination of the media" in the U.S. was to blame for Holocaust deaths getting a bigger spotlight than the millions of deaths that occurred in Russia in World War II.

The rest of the quote suggested that, in addition, U.S. foreign policy in general had been messed up by Jews both foreign and domestic: “There’s a major lobby in the United States," Stone said. "They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has [messed] up United States foreign policy for years.”

What about the response from the Israeli Diaspora Affairs minister whose comments were featured in this article from the Jerusalem Post?

Director: US Holocaust focus is product of ‘Jewish media domination.’

Diaspora Affairs and Public Diplomacy Minister Yuli Edelstein slammed Academy Award-winning director Oliver Stone on Monday for comments he made in an interview to Britain’s Sunday Times, in which he downplayed the Holocaust, defended Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and complained about Jewish influence in the United States.

Edelstein said that Stone’s statements to the newspaper were racist and anti-Semitic and made him sick.

“Beyond the ignorance he proves with his comments, his demonization of the Jewish people could be a sequel to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion,” the minister said. “When a man of Stone’s stature says such things, it could lead to a new wave of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism, and it may even cause real harm to Jewish communities and individuals.”

In the interview, Stone said America’s focus on the Holocaust was a product of the “Jewish domination of the media.” He said his upcoming Showtime documentary series Secret History of America would put Hitler and Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin “in context.” “Hitler did far more damage to the Russians than the Jewish people, 25 or 30 [million killed],” Stone said.

When asked by the interviewer why so much of an emphasis had been placed on the Holocaust, Stone responded, “The Jewish domination of the media. There’s a major lobby in the United States. They are hard workers. They stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f***** up United States foreign policy for years.”

<snip>

Stone also raised an uproar when he defended Hitler at a press conference in January.

“Hitler is an easy scapegoat throughout history and it’s been used cheaply,” he said at the time. “He’s the product of a series of actions. It’s cause and effect.”

He was also slammed in The Atlantic and The Baltimore Sun, although slammed is not quite the right word for their utter disdain and disgust with him.

But of course, for real truth you have to go to The Huffington Post, which says:

As the largest and most recent coordinated genocidal attack against Jewry in world history, the Holocaust has been the topic of intense analysis. The genocide did not start spontaneously with bullets or gas chambers at its peak in the 1940s, but rather with a carefully sculpted campaign of escalating lies and bigotry in the 1930s. What is most remarkable today, however, is that the poison of the Holocaust did not end its toxic rampage with the death of its victims or its chief perpetrator, Adolph Hitler, generations ago. The toxicity continues today in various potencies, through carefully sculpted contemporary rhetoric and pseudo analysis by powerful figures such as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Oliver Stone who distort history.

Stone's statement in London's Sunday Times is already on major Anti-Semitic websites around the world:

<snip>

There is something else disturbing about Stone's insensitivity. For one, he employs the same "Jewish domination" theme -- in this case of the media to explain why we focus on the Holocaust. The same kind of Jew-baiting that Hitler used to execute his atrocities. If American Jews keep up their media domination, America may very well have to employ the same censorship and takeover measures that his buddy Hugo Chavez has employed so benevolently against dissenters in Venezuela.

He's blaming the Jews, Brits, and Americans for the Holocaust and claiming that Hitler was just misunderstood, and then blaming our outrage over the Holocaust on Jewish media elites. It's time to stick a fork in him and his tiny, demented, conspiratorial mind.

Stone can be a talented writer and filmmaker when he manages to reign in the conspiracy and extremist nonsense that dominates his personal views and just makes a good story. But yeah, I've never been a fan of his frequently nutty political views even though we're both on the left side of the political spectrum. He can make an occasional good point, but if it's the proverbial needle buried amidst a haystack of batshit crazy, the valid part tends to get lost in the mix.

He's a loon. And when was his last good movie? I can't even recall a good one among his recent ones.

'World Trade Center' was very good. I didn't see 'W.' so I don't know how that was, but it was fairly well-reviewed. The new 'Wall Street' sequel looks like it might be good, and it's never been more topical.

That's why you should never ask a director, screenwriter, actor or musicians for their political opinions. There's a reason why they work in fiction.

He's made some good movies.

Back in the 80s, he made Platoon, Wall Street, and Born on the Fourth of July (all excellent).

In the 90s, he managed to make some good ones like Nixon and Any Given Sunday. I even like JFK (it's an amazing achievement from a purely film-making point of view, even though it's complete and utter bullshit historically and politically) (seriously, if you doubt that, go read Jim Garrison's own real-life book on the case - the man was bugfuck insane!).

However, ever since Any Given Sunday, he hasn't made anything remotely good.

And to that the fact that he's completely batshit crazy, and you have a film-maker who's past his prime.

Anybody who wants to "put Hitler in context" just gets a :wtf: from me. Here's the context you fucking loon - Hitler was evil, pure and simple. Were there others who also have to share the blame for the Holocaust? Of course there were. But that doesn't lessen Hitler's controlling role.

And if he honestly thinks that Hugo Chavez is laudable, he should just remember this - Chavez has recently nationalized all forms of the press in his country and effectively made opposition to his regime illegal. Which means that film-makers who have an opposing political viewpoint from Chavez and Stone would be thrown in prison for simply speaking their minds, like Stone is doing. Sounds like a perfectly honest thing to do to me. :shifty:

The actual point about such a discussion should not be to make Hitler look less evil but to simply understand how he became the man he was and how he came to such an important position. But that's already understood, and Stone isn't telling us anything new.

The original quote from the scumbags' fake-news site was:

Following the links shows quite clearly Stone did not "belittle" the Holocaust. The fake news site was indeed lying. What needs to be explained is why someone caught passing around a lie doesn't have the good grace to apologize, or at least shut up.

The LA Times blogger doesn't seem to know that Stone is correct on the relative numbers of "Jewish" and "Russian" dead. There is no reason at all, least of all the words LA Times, to worry about the opinion of someone who ignores facts relevant to the discussion. Another well known fact is that AIPAC boasts of its power. Anyone who pretends that saying it's powerful is wrong is another liar. The assumption that criticizing its influence is in itself wrong is unjustified.

An Israeli official is not going to favor a US citizen criticizing the support for Israel. Obviously he expects everyone to believe without question that criticizing Israeli policies is anti-Semitic. I imagine Jewish Israeli critics of government policies find that attitude demeaning and threatening. Why people in the US should take their lead from a foreign official is mysterious. Edelstein probably knew that Stone was thinking of how German industrialists and the US and British governments favored Hitler during his rise, rather than making excuses for Hitler, which would show him as just another liar, anyhow.

Who reads the Huffington Post? If this crap is any indication of what's supposed to pass for the "left" in the US, it means militant ignorance has triumphed. Despite the viciously xenophobic campaigns against Chavez, he has repeatedly won free elections, and accepted elections that went against him. The supposed dissident media has operated freely for years, despite their eager embrace of a coup against the popularly elected government. Frankly, they should have paid the price for their crimes long ago. This Big Lie right there shows how worthless anything these people have to say really is.

As for the fake news site, the funny thing is that those are the kind of people who loved Hitler. I imagine the only thing they really have against him is the loser image. That's why they were irked by Stone daring to refer to US support for Hitler, he was besmirching their political forebears.

Just about everything in this post is complete horsefeathers.
Except the Mel Gibson bit.
