Sherlock - BBC ONE & HD - Sunday 25th

Oh one slight annoyance, Sherlock saying 'This is Christmas.' Very jarring.
Yeah, that took me and the rest of my family right out of the episode. Too big a reminder of the Eleventh Doctor on top of everything else similar between them. Thankfully the differences became more apparent as time went on.

^^ You mean this.

And yes, a spoiler warning would be appropriate if you're going to give away the ending.

I loved the first episode. I'm really looking forward to next week's. It seems Steven Moffat can't put a foot wrong for me. From Coupling and Chalk to Doctor Who (and the Comic Relief special with Rowan Atkinson) and Sherlock, there isn't a show he's done that I haven't enjoyed.

For me, there was the right amount of humour, action, pace and I loved the character interaction. I've never heard of Benedict Cumberbatch, but I think he did a good job in the role, and Martin Freeman also pleasantly surprised me. The twist at the end was just the icing on the cake.

Any worries I had about bringing Sherlock into the 21st century were very cleverly and firmly put to rest. It has a very unique style which I really enjoyed.

From a nerdy perspective, there was one shot that went from inside 221B Baker Street, to outside on the street on a freehand cam, then subtly moved onto a steadicam and into a crane shot. Probably something that won't be noticed by the majority but I thought it was a pretty clever little sequence.

I know it's early days, but I'm hoping this incarnation of Holmes won't be confined to just three 90 minute episodes.

[/gush]

I didn't think to put on in the title, but yeah it's a discussion thread and probably will be for all 3 episodes, so could a mod change the title to put a spoiler warning in please?

Holdfast has pretty much saved me from posting by saying what I'd wanted to say. Conan Doyle this is not - Jeremy Brett's crown is safe in that regard, I think. But this was an interesting re-imagining of the characters and some of the concepts into a different environment.

Interesting what our resident shrink says about diagnosis - I was amused by that discussion as I've heard many arguments that Conan Doyle's Holmes is bi-polar, drug dependent etc (interesting hints at that, too, with the nicotine patches and the drug raid - swapping a 'three pipe problem' for a 'three patch problem'.)

Overall, I enjoyed it and will stay up to watch next week. Or record for watching another night as there's so little on TV these days.

Regarding the drug habit, they've said in interviews they didn't want to make a big deal out of it because Sherlock wasn't a coke head or anything, the use of drugs wasn't recreational they were used because there wasn't painkillers around like today, and Holmes wasn't an addict. Also they said something about the drug use was dropped in the books after about 4 books, and there's actually more references to him smiling than to taking drugs, so it isn't an integral part of the story as people like to think.

So given that, I think they did a good job of referencing it without really making a big deal of it.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. As others have said it was a tad predictable but it was so much fun that I didn't really mind. And I even enjoyed Martin Freeman's performance for once, it actually felt like he was acting here rather than just being, well, Martin Freeman.

Looking forward to next week.

Other than guessing the cabbie was the killer early on, I loved. More for the characters and atmosphere than the plot though. Surely all the pills were death pills, and the cabbie had taken an antidote?

Best on Sunday night in a bloody long time. Shame there's only three episodes... for now.

Nah I suspect the pills were as he said, he was just very good at reading people, or very lucky.

For me, the whole cabbie as culprit thing was telegraphed from the get go. It seemed more structured like a Columbo in that respect, not a whodunnit, but how he gets caught.

I couldn't take the denouement seriously either, I kept flashing back to the confrontation with the Sicilian in The Princess Bride...

But love the characters, and the update, all of the character stuff really worked well.

It was hugely enjoyable but yeah, the cabbie was so obvious it just seems bonkers that Holmes still couldn't make the connection even after the damn thing was at his front door.

The other issue I had was that the police were portrayed as just a bit too dense (common in the original material I know but I think it's a tad unfair in a modern update). The suitcase thing was well done but in any suspicious death these days the poilce would look for the mobile phone and seek access to the Email account.

Very enjoyable, loved the whole Gattis character thing, I'm sure we were all thinking the same thing right up until the last moment.

I'm sure this will move into a regular series no problem.

My first guess was that the the four murders he just read the people well, but the Holmes pills surely were both poison and that maybe Moriarty offered his children an extra bonus if he took Holmes with him into his grave.

*skipping to the end to avoid spoilers hunting the thread for the info*

Is this going to come to America? if so, when and what channel?
