What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPhone4?

I'm eligible for an upgrade now, and I'm debating between some phones. There's a lot of good stuff out there now. I've been using a Blackberry Bold 9000 for 2 years now, which I've loved. One key feature for me is that I want a real tactile QWERTY keyboard on the phone, and I really don't know how I'd do with a slider phone. I like the bar format phone with screen and keyboard all on the front face, like the Bold. I've been looking, and really the only other phone like this that might be better is the Palm Pixi Plus which is now on AT&T. At the same time, there is also the more capable Palm Pre Plus also, but it is a slider. And of course there is the iPhone 4, but I don't know if I could get use to the touch screen typing. I've also looked at the HTC Aria (Droid 2.2) phone. So, what to get?

Palm Pixi Plus - Leaning toward this phone right now, has a QWERTY keyboard under a capacitive touch screen which is nice. The screen is a bit small though, but is 18-bit versus my Bold's 16-bit so should have better color, but the screen is basically the same size which is kinda small. The camera is only 2 MP, same as my Bold, so that is only a lateral move there. But, WebOS looks pretty darn cool, and it looks like web browsing will be better. I like the dual nature of the phone, to have a touch screen and a QWERTY keyboard, I really really like this. It just seems though that the Palm Pixi Plus is a little underpowered, and the camera is only 2MP, and there is 8GB (7GB usable) of internal memory. One good thing about this phone is that it will only cost me $50 out the door!

Palm Pre Plus - This phone is much more powerful, has OpenGL graphics, and a 3MP camera. However, it is a slider phone, the QWERTY keyboard slides out from the bottom, and the phone is pretty thick. The touch screen is bigger, and 24-bit, but I'm not sure if that slider nature of it would bother me or not. There is however internal 16GB of storage. This one will cost me a little more on ATT, it isn't real cheap.

HTC Aria - This is an Android 2.2 touch screen phone, all touch screen, no keyboard. It looks nice, performs pretty fast, i'm just not sure if I can get use to touch screen typing. I'm also not sure about the Android OS really and apps. I had an HTC phone once and I hated it.

iPhone 4 - This phone is plauaged with problems like dropped calls, bad reception, and maybe Apple can fix some of this stuff, but again touch screen and not sure if I'll get use to typing on a screen. This is also the most expensive out of the bunch, I'd want the 32GB model and that would set me back $300 ouch. However, iTunes is a plus, and out of all the phones it has the most features and the highest specs, I'm impressed with the CPU and the graphics.

So what to do, what to do. I think RIM is a bit behind the curve right now, and while OS 5.0 is good, OS 6.0 will be better but its not out yet. I like iOS 4, but I've never used WebOS or Android. Watching video reviews of all these phones on Youtube WebOS looks pretty darn cool though, I would say it is the most iPhone like, and that is kinda what I'm looking for, but with a QWERTY keyboard. That is why I am leaning toward the Pixi Plus. I just wish it had a bigger screen and a better camera and better graphics chip. For that, I'd need to go to the Pre Plus, but its a slider phone, and thicker, and more expensive, but it has the bigger screen, better camera and graphics I want.

Ughhhh, so what to do!?

Seems like you did the sensible thing; research, research and research :rommie:

I can't say anything about any of the machines you mention as I finished my search for the portable computer perfectly suited to me some months ago and decided on the N900 from Nokia (Wikipedia article):

Nokia-N900.jpg

Amongst the things that made my decision are the slide-out qwerty keyboard (as I would rarely need a keyboard when browsing but definitely would need a hardware one when being, say, here or when typing in all sorts of data), the no need for specialised simplified websites, the excellent camera, the µSD card slot, running widgets and multiple programs simultaneously, the open OS, the geeky nature of a lot of the people in the forums dedicated to it (loads of very interesting apps come from geeks!), The Mozilla browser (and that I can use Firefox on it -with all the synchronising I could ever need to the Firefox on my PC), the ability to play a great number of formats in the media player (mkv ), The fact that Nokia made it (almost a guarantee that the built in phone is a good one) and that I can hook it up to a TV and use it as a video player.
-To name a few...

This is incorrect, the Aria is a 2.1 device (no SenseUI devices are 2.2 yet) and it's a midrange phone. If you're comparing it to the iPhone 4 you're going to be disappointed.

Better Android alternatives are the Nexus One (if you can afford to pay full price and not get it subsidized) and the Captivate, which is AT&T's version of the Samsung Galaxy S. Unfortunately, AT&T has a history of screwing with their Android devices and crippling some of their capacities (the Nexus One being immune from this), not to mention their fairly anemic choice of devices. Options for Android are generally a lot better on the other carriers as AT&T would really prefer you buy an iPhone.

I love HTC phones personally (have had one or another for about 8 years now). If I was in the market for a new phone, I'd probably pick either one of the HD2 or the EVO 4G. Unfortunately they aren't planning on releasing the Evo in the UK because we don't have a 4G network. But even without that, the features and screen on the Evo seem awesome and I'd happily have one even without the 4G. Hell, the battery might even last better (the battery life issue is the one issue that would push me back towards the HD2).

You do know about switching off WLAN/Wi-Fi because it's HELL on the battery?

I do, but if I had an EVO 4G and had access to a 4G network, I suspect I'd be using it a hell of a lot more than I currently use the internet on my phone!

As for regular wi-fi, I already have that routinely turned off on my current phone to save battery life.

Just asked 'cuz it was kinda weird to see how much it mattered once someone told me -well, once I read about it on-line- I more than doubled my use of the thing per charge by only using 3G.

4G... I'd need a much bigger tablet to get full use of that :rommie:

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

Do not get the Pre or Pixi. Just don't.

I'd go with the HTC Evo

Yeah, I guess. :D

But for phones, I think the Evo just about hits the limit of acceptability in terms of the size I'd want to carry around. It's big, but slim, and will fit neatly in most jacket inside pockets. I also love the idea of the kickstand. Utterly simple. But genius! :)

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

EVO's just above the useability threshold for me, I think.

Well I don't actually know, because I haven't ever seen an EVO or HD2 in person. But I've got a lot of stuff to cram in my pants pockets. :p

^ love it. Plus if you have trouble with the plumbing anywhere on your travels, you can just detach it from your iPad and away you go!

Well, to be fair I've only seen the HD2 in person, but looking at the comparison vids online of the Evo and HD2, I reckon I could handle an Evo. Just. I'd want to handle it in person to be sure though, I agree. For me, it's more about the comfort of holding it in the hand rather than the stowage issues, since I almost always have a jacket on except in the height of summer.

It's funny, with the advent of smartphones over the past 5 years or so, the cellphone market went from trying to shrink down the size of a phone as much as ergnomically possible, to trying to make it as large as ergonomically possible. :D

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

As much as I love Palm, I wouldn't recommend getting a Pre or Pixi. The writing is on the wall for that platform, and it seems you're looking for a smartphone that has wide support. The webOS phones just don't cut it.

For breadth of available applications I don't think you can go wrong with either the iPhone or an Android-based unit, just keep the flaws of each in mind when making your decision.

I'm actually mostly curious about the Samsung Galaxy S screen... at 4", it's inbetween the 3.7" of my Nexus (which I'm pretty happy with) and the 4.3" of the EVO. Not to mention they're using the new Super AMOLED stuff which Samsung isn't apparently going to let anyone else use for another year!

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

HP just canned most of the Palm staff, so I'd stay away from Palm for now.

Nokia is releasing the new N900 this fall supposedly.

I'd wait on the iPhone for the time being.

AT&T launches the Samsung Captivate on July 18th. And the line of new Dells will hit this fall.

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

I'd say set aside your need for a physical QWERTY keyboard, wait for September and get a Nokia N8.

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

I'm still a fan of my iPhone even though I wish I had another option besides AT&T. The fact they won't allow free tethering really peeves me. The HTC is looking pretty tempting...

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

The Captivate sounds pretty sexy. I would wait until it is released and see what the reviews say.

Re: What cell phone should I get - Pixi Plus, Pre Plus, HTC Aria, iPho

Can someone elaborate on the general consensus not to get the Palm Pixi Plus or Pre Plus from Palm? It seems a lot of people are telling me this is not a good platform right now.

This article doesn't make it sound too bad though, like it will still be supported - http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_gadg/20100701/tc_ytech_gadg/ytech_gadg_tc3009

Basically, HP bought Palm. What will happen to it is anyone's guess. Do you really want to buy a phone that, six months down the road, might not even be supported anymore, or have no app store? It just seems like a needless risk to go with a platform that's in jeopardy when you've got two healthy, stable platforms to choose from (iPhone, Android.)
