Rudd vs. Gillard

http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/7452526/gillard-australias-first-female-pm

Yes Julia Gillard is our new primeminster.

Also our first female to reach the top job.

i am abit annoyed that we didnt get to vote. only the people who lead the Labor Party which was around 100 people.
Alot of people have been in tonch with the sunrise show which is televised in the morning
they have been emailed tweeted on the internet.
I hope she will do a good job but l am not happy the way this has been done.
We go to the polls in October l think and l am not sure who to vote for they are all a pack of idiots
Kevin Rudd was shown around 11.15 am aussie time and he doesnt look to happy.
What are your opinions on this and also do you think Julia will do a better Job Than Mr Rudd.

We never get to vote on who is Prime Minister. We only get to vote on who our local representatives are. The only people who can cast a vote for a PM are those who are in his electorate.

The election isn't due until November and can be as late as May.

No Australian outside of Parliament has ever gotten to vote for the prime minister. Rudd got the job as he was voted leader of the Labor party and held the position when they won the election (trivia - the position of Prime Minister is not mentioned in the Australian constitution)

Well in my opinion it is wrong and l know that most of this nation is not happy with this outcome.
We need to change this so people will have there say
Julia agreed to alot of what mr Rudd was doing with this country how will she fair better than him

we are also turning into America where they can not have a say on things

For 109 years (i.e since Federation) Australians have not voted directly for a Prime Minister. Gilliard is our 27th Prime Minister.

I see nothing wrong with the Prime Minister simply being the head of the Party that is currently in power.

Given that an election becomes due at the end of this year I fail to see how you can say that the people won't get their say.

It's the same as when Keating replaced Hawke - the people then got to vote on whether they wanted Labor lead by Keating to retain office or hand power to the Coalition lead by Hewson.

And it's the same if Howard had handed over power to Costello before the 2007 election.

And was the same when the Tories replaced Thatcher with John Major.

The people get their say at the next election.

It's the Parliamentary system.

As Marc said, except Id' go back even further with my examples, to Sir Williams McMahon & Sir John Gorton, Bill Hayden & Bob Hawke.
Well I don't know what radio interview & reports you're listenng to.

Darling, I think maybe you need to do some more civics classes.

Hayden was never P.M - he got replaced by Hawke just prior to the 1983 election (there were ructions in the Labor party indicating that Hayden was going to be dumped, Fraser hoped to go the election before the spill but Hawke became leader before it was called). Given that the 1983 Australian Federal election is referred to as the Drover's Dog (i.e Labor would have won regardless of who was leading) how much difference it made at that time is unknown - but later history could of been different.

well we didnt get a say this morining.and l am not happy with that.
They say she will be doing something about all the boat people who are coming here
I hope she sticks to her word
We need to have a tougher stance to these people coming into the country and the money we are spending to house them could be spent on other things in this country
What l am saying is that thses people need to come the right way and they get to come in front of the people who are making the effect to immagrate here properly.
Also it will be interesting to see what she does about the mining company in Western austraia
There is soposed to be alot of change ahead
i hope it is for the good of this nation.

what part of "Australians have never gotten a direct say in who the prime minister is" do you not comprehend?

do you know how the most of the people in Australian who are there illegally there arrive? I'll give you a hint - it's not via boat. By far the most illegal immigrants arrive through Sydney Airport.

those who arrive via boat are seekers of refugee status and Australia is bound by treat obligations to take them and and process them. If they found to be legitimate than they stay, otherwise they are deported to their country of origin. it is the media and the politicians - particularly on the conservative side - who are the ones who label them illegal - some through ignorance, some through fear and some for electoral advantage. It is completely seperate from immigration.

Whether you're happy or not is neither here nor there. We don't have a Presidential system here. You're not happy, then don't vote for their candidate in your electorate - that's all you can do, or stand for your local seat yourself.

Whether Hayden was leader or not is immaterial - he was the Parliamentary leader of his party & thus the Opposition Leader. THe PM is the leader of the Parliamentary Majority in the Lower HOuse. This is the Parliamentry party system in action

My brother used to work as a lawyer for the immigration department. He told me that the biggest groups of illegals were Chinese students who overstayed their student visas and British people who overstay working or tourist visas.

Overstayers are a massive percentage of illegals in Australia - as in about 10 times the boat/plane arrivals.

Majority are UK, USA and China, all around 10% of the total.

Quite a momentous, bloody day in Australian politics. The pace of events has been breathtaking. I think we can infer the ALP is in dire trouble in the marginals.

Only the political junkies will be familiar with Lindsay Tanner, he was the finance minister, and represented much of the intellectual muscle of this troubled government. He has just announced he is standing down, and I daresay his departure will not only cost the federal ALP a ton of credibility, but also his seat of Melbourne which will surely fall to the Greens.

Tanner is a huge loss.

I wish Julia Gillard well, it will take quite some effort for her to save the ALP from a long, long spell in the wilderness.

You just have to see how well the ALP did on the State level in the Penrith-based Lindsay By-election last weekend.

There's no inference in whatso ever - it was reported in the media in the past week of so that Labor was in deep shit in the marginals and it's now being reported that the change to Gilard could well be enough to save them.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/06/24/2936377.htm?section=justin

Labor MPs in marginal seats who were staring into the jaws of defeat have pinned their hopes on new Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
Despite an overwhelming determination to ditch Kevin Rudd for Ms Gillard, many MPs found the experience of tearing down their leader a searing one.
Sid Sidebottom holds the seat of Braddon in northern Tasmania by a margin of just 1.8 per cent.
He has faced electoral oblivion before, losing his seat in 2004 and then winning it back with Mr Rudd's help.
Like many of his colleagues he wants to look to the future, not denigrate the deposed leader, but he says it has been an emotional day.

Before reading of his impending retirement, thought Tanner might be finally bumped to treasure to replace Swann but now with swann as deputy P.M he'll probably keep the treasurer role.

You just have to see how well the ALP did on the State level in the Penrith-based Lindsay By-election last weekend.

A result that has little or no relevance to the federal scene - Penrith massive swing against Labor was all related to the state Labor government which has been in office for over 15 years and has gone through 4 Premiers in that time (2 retired, 1 dumped) and has serious crediblity and integrity issue

Well, after a busy day, I've listened to Rudd's last press conference and Gillard's first press conference, and they're both class acts.

If Gillard can walk the walk like she talked the talk, she could be pretty good. And I think the election will be called sooner rather than later.

Ah well. Interesting times and all that
