Red Hair

I was talking to my best friend about Australia's new PM and I mentioned that in the thread here about it some men had mentioned that they found red haired women attractive.

My friend said she didn't believe that. She herself has red hair though it lighter now than it was as a child. she insists that people don't like red hair.

Now I prefer dark haired men but I said that I could name a few women who I thought were beautiful redheads and I specifically mentioned Gillian Anderson. I also said I could understand that some women found Boris Becker or Seth Green attractive. My friend doesn't think any of this people are attractive at all.

So would be interested to see who here likes redheads and I would like some examples of redheads you think are attractive.

I'm surprised at your friends. Most people I know (myself included) find redheads pretty attractive. Karen Gillan naturally pops to the top of my list as a good example:

I can see how it may not work the other way, though... you rarely hear about male redheads spoken of in the same light.

I don't know of anyone who dislikes redheads though I don't find too many who dislike blondes either even though I'm not a fan of blonde hair myself. People who dislike blonde hair seem to be a much bigger minority than those who dislike red hair in my experience.

I've never understood it either. It's this weird tradition that somehow red-haired people are strange - no idea why...

I recall reading somewhere that it goes back to tribal prejudices in what is now the UK, way back in the day. I have no idea how true that is. Whatever it the roots, the idea that redheads have fiery temperaments and fierce sexuality seems to go back to ancient times. In one of my classics classes we had a whole debate about whether the stereotypes might have originated with The Iliad, because Achilles is described as having red hair.

I like red hair, personally!

That said, I'm very pleased to see another prominent woman world leader; I couldn't care less what color her hair is. We need more woman leaders. As long as the next one isn't Sarah Palin!
