you did 11 twice

i still think fromthe new ones Christopher Eccleston had some of the best episodes.
Everybody will say tennant but it was becasue he appealed to kids,

Eccleston definitely had the strongest scripts, in my opinion. But favorite Doctor...? Probably Tennant, though Smith has grown on me quickly.

I liked both Eccleston and Tennant, but I voted for Matt Smith because he's doing a great job with the role.

Ten's still my favourite. Smith hasn't come close to matching Tennant in the role yet, although he is doing a good job so far.

I'd have to go with Smith. Thus far he seems to be more along the lines of grumpy, eccentric, all-around weird type, which is not what I'd give Eccleston (intense, tough) or Tennant (hip, charming, nerdy). Since Smith's traits are much more evocative of the older Doctors, I might just favor him.

I really loved Eccleston and it took me about two years to accept Tennant in the role. But now he is the definitive modern Doctor in my eyes. But I'm really liking Smith so far. So I say all three are excellent in different ways with Tennant edging out.

i as well Matt Smith is more his own Doctor as its Steven Moffit as head writer insted of Russel T Davis. i hope he has a few good series Mr Smith does

Eccleston is my favourite of the three and I wish we had more than just one series with him. But then again, he did leave me wanting more and that's usually a good thing.

Tennant and Smith both have pros and cons but there was nothing about Eccleston's Doctor that I really didn't like.

And Bones, I usually agree with your critical assessments but I vehemently disagree with your "Northern binman" bit. And considering that each Doctor has a distinct personality, how exactly do you define what is and isn't "Doctor-like" other than purely subjectively?

Going back to the OP. This is waaaaaay premature. Both Eccleston and Tennant have had their complete eras come and go. Tennant held sway for 4 1/2 years. Smith has had 6 weeks. I don't see why anyone would want to vote in such a poll at this stage. A fair comparison is physically and ethically impossible. Doesn't matter if you like Smith or hate him.

Give Smith at least a full season so he's on par with Eccleston. Or better yet, wait a couple years until he inevitably passes the torch so we can compare full eras.

(This also goes for any attempt to compare Amy with Rose, Martha or Donna. Can't do it until she gets a full season.)

Perhaps it is subjective, and I'd hate to be the sort of fan who waffles on about having a "Doctorish quality". But the reason for choosing Eccleston and putting him in a scruffy leather jacket is clear to me. It was out of a shame for what Doctor Who used to be. Rather than an eccentric in clothes that matched that eccentricity, we got an occasionally nasty scruff in a leather jacket who called humans "stupid, blundering, apes". To make it different from the show that people used to laugh it, they made the lead into a thuggish Coronation Street extra. Each Doctor is different, but there was nothing of the Doctor in him that I recognised. Eccleston's varying performance didn't help either. They sort of dodged the issue with Tennant; they put him in a suit, and at least he could recognisably be the Doctor. But at the same time, to try and be as acceptable as possible, they chose someone extremely handsome and made him prance around like a grown up Harry Potter guffawing about how he loves a little shop. Perhaps it's only because the show has now gained acceptability among a public who are more concerned with cheap emotional drama, pretty CGI, and quick pace over decent plots that we can have a Doctor like Matt Smith - a funny looking eccentric in a bow tie.

As to the idea that it's still too soon to judge the Eleventh Doctor in comparison to the others, I disagree. His character's been very well established in a short space of time. If I've remembered correctly, the equivalent point we're at compared to series 1 is Father's Day, and I think it's safe to say we didn't get anything new in the Ninth Doctor between then and the regeneration. It may have taken a whole series and the loss of Rose before Tennant became acceptable in my view, but I think Matt Smith has definitely established his character by now. After all, McGann only had the one film, and he's probably my second favourite Doctor.

Eccleston was a great Doctor, and the decision to bring the show back with a subdued Doctor was a brilliant decision, and probably the reason the show's got so popular now and that we got to have Tennant and now Smith who can be more Doctor like.

Seriously what would your grand plan have been? Some sub panto actor in a multi coloured coat? The show would have died within about 3 episodes...

I'd hate to be the sort of fan who waffles on about having a "Doctorish quality"

See I don't beleive that.I think you love being that sort of fan. And Eccleston had a real Doctorish quality, imo. He wasn't wildly extravagant, but he had an alien strangeness to him that was perfect for the role at the time.

Yeah, nice one. Actually, I'd have used McGann. Of course, when the bloke running it insists on having almost every episode of the series set on a London council estate, you can understand how you'd need Eccleston rather than an actual Doctor so it doesn't look ridiculous.

I was initially resistant to watching the revived show when it started. But Eccleston had me hooked from the start. I was even able to tolerate Rose, a character I loathe, because of him.

Had I started with Tennant, who took a long time to grow on me, I may not have continued watching. Ah well, taste is a personal thing after all, Bones. We disagree about Eccleston and Piper. But I still like you so make with the reviews. I'm suffering from scathing criticism withdrawal. ;)
