so, which finale was better?

I dropped out of Ashes to Ashes after one season because hubby and I both thought the main character was an annoying, unpleasant, BORE.

I liked LOST's finale. It all tied in with LOST's overall themes of redemption, purpose and unity.

^Shame, whilst Alex was annoying in series 1, she became much, much more likable. Plus the reasons why she was unpleasant to being with were perfectly logical.

Both series ended wonderfully, but I'm gonna go with the ending that made me cry.

Lost for the win!

Ashes to Ashes ending was fantastic.

I can't really compare though as I never saw Lost past the first season.

Alex became a better character once she decided to go with the flow in Series 2. You should give the rest of the show a chance.

I never saw Ashes to Ashes. I loved Lost's finale even though I guessed was they were doing beforehand.

Why have I never heard of Ashes to Ashes before, but now that Lost has ended, it's in every Lost thread?

Because some people think that final plot twist hasn't been done half a billion times before. :rommie: I managed to guess it off of pretty much zero clues provided in the show (at least, that I noticed), just on the basis of it being one of about four or five "obvious" ways they could go.

several people guessed the ending. The show's creators wanted an ending that wouldn't come as a suprise to anyone who paid attention, and more than anything, concluded the story in a logical manner.

The true genius of the Ashes finale isn't the general plot, which was used perfectly here, but the fact that it gave it's characters a loving and respectful sendoff while still being an exciting episode.

And obviously anyone unfamilar with the show should see it, although you have to begin with Life on Mars. It amazes me how little attention top notch British series recieve here in the states. It's criminal.

i haven't watched Ashes to Ashes...but a better comparison would be with 24's finale.

Do you prefer your Jack dying or surviving the end of the show?

They're being compared because they both used the "it's purgatory" ending.

Personally, I was rather ambivalent to both. For Lost because it just confirmed that they were making crap up as they went along and for Ashes to Ashes because it seemed... well, rather pedestrian and ruined the ending of Life on Mars.

I tried one or two episodes of Ashes to Ashes, didn't really like it. I loved the original Life on Mars though, so I always thought I might get back to it. But I guess not anymore, as given my knowledge of that universe and what people vomited into the Lost finale thread, it's pretty obvious where they went with it.

Might be because I saw the A2A finale a few days before Lost's, but Lost's seemed fairly redundant afterwards.

I'm gonna go with Ashes to Ashes, I thought it was one of the best endings to a show I've ever seen. Lost I just thought it made it obvious they made shit up as they went and had no real idea where they were going with it. It wasn't bad by any means, but I don't really see myself being interested enough to watch all 6 seasons again.

To be fair, I don't think they knew that Hunt was a dead cop in purgatory back during the Life on Mars days either. It feels like a retcon of sorts.

actuallly, they knew at least around s2 of LOM because that was the plan for LOM S3 - what we got in A2A.

Maybe so, but I didn't get the same feel of "Shit, we can't possibly wrap this up, lets just go with this" feeling from A2A that I got from Lost.

I think in both cases they kinda knew what they wanted to do. I think some stuff about Gene was telegraphed very early on. To both Sam and Alex he said--early on I think--you don't leave until I'm done with you, and I'm glad they brought Nelson back in the end, I'd always got the feeling in LoM that he was somehoiw much more than he appeared but they never seemed to go anywhere with it.

With Lost I need to watch the whole thing again but I do think a lot of things were put in place early on. As a friend of mine pointed out when I mentioned the plane, nice to see they landed on the runway that Sawyer and Kate were halping to clear in S3!

There are some similarites but there are also a lot of differences in the end.

Only a small part of Lost was purgatory, whereas the entire of LoM and A2A was--have to love the difference between the US and UK versions of heaven though, in America you all meet in church, here you all meet down the boozer ;)
