As far as I'm concerned, Arizona is only doing what the federal government is SUPPOSED to do. I'm all for legal immigration but there is a process you need to go through.

No. These kind of policies encourage racial discrimination and the only "reasonable suspicion" could be based on ethnicity. You risk turning American citizens into second class citizens with policies like this. If you really want to crack down on illegal immigration you need to stop with the hypocritical policies that encourage it to begin with.

It's right in the wording of the law itself. Race CAN NOT be used as a criterion for establishing suspicion. I don't have to lie to myself or anyone else. It's right there in black and white.

I'm not going to disagree with you on the last sentence, as you're spot on.

However, to say that the only "reasonable suspicion" is based on ethnicity belies a serious lack of imagination or unfamiliarity with the situation in the state.

Here's a scenario for you: You are a police officer patrolling Interstate 19 three miles north of Nogales, Arizona (a border city) and a known immigrant smuggling route. The van is driving five miles under the speed limit. You pull forward to try to read the license and run the numbers and as you do, the van does a lane shift and a slowdown to avoid letting you see. You're not having it, so you turn the lights on and try to pull over the van. The van stops, and a dozen or more individuals jump out of the van and scatter. You call for backup and round up everyone that jumped out.

Now, judging from the TOTALITY OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES, what would be your REASONABLE suspicious about the immigration status of the individuals in question? Notice I never once mentioned the ethnicity of anyone involved.

Does this sound like a far-fetched scenario? I wish it were, this scenario repeats itself in real life several times each week.

Of course. I live here. I'm glad the state is doing what the Feds aren't. Enforcing immigration laws. I don't give a damn what the illegals think because they don't have a right to be here in the first place. Not an AZ resident but yes I do support it and no it is not discriminatory at all which is proved if one actually reads the law. The Federal government needs to do its constitutional duty. They are (under multiple administrations) the ones who dropped the ball and backed AZ into a corner.

Pretty much the way I feel about it right now, and I DO live and pay taxes here. My only caveat is that we should also make it a lot tougher on the companies that hire illegal aliens. If you make it a $50,000 fine for the first offense for having an illegal in your workforce period, the problem will go away.

That being said, the easiest way for police departments to enforce this law is going to be to require their officers to ask everyone for proof of citizenship.

It's been my experience that some of the strongest supporters of immigration laws have been those people who legally immigrated to the country. If they had to wait on the line and do shit the right way, why should others get to take a short cut?

Agreed. But why not crank it up to $100,000? I dunno, $50,000 seems kinda low but maybe that is just me.

In reality that approval rate is nation wide across a multitude of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Agreed on the approval across cultural and ethnic backgrounds. I'm just pointing out the approval rate among legal Hispanics here in Arizona because I would think that would be the first group that would be up in arms if this law really did legalize racial profiling like the antagonists are asserting.

I wish there were a 3rd option in the poll. This law does not create the kind of police state that all of its hysterical detractors claim it does. Nor is it particularly effective in any measure but an administrative one. The only reason why the law got passed in the first place was for political granstanding in an election year with a very crowded Republican field.

If you do not believe that the law will be enforced as written, then why bother protesting against said law? If the law will not be enforced as written, then we already live in a dictatorial state where the police have arbitrary, unlimited power and SB1070 will change nothing. And if that's the case, then much more comprehensive reform is needed, beyond repealing SB1070. If you have any suggestions for rooting out this alleged inherent racism in the police departments, I'd love to hear it.

Ummmm.... Who doesn't do that? One should ALWAYS have a form of identification on them, walking, running, biking, hanging out in the mall or *gasp* driving...

To not do so is irresponsible.. Good luck identifying your mangled body at the bottom of a ditch after a car hits you if you aren't carrying ID...
