Movies you love but (most) everyone else hates

Mars Attacks! gets a lot of hate, but I love it. Probably because I also love the style of movie it was lampooning, which I thought it did very well.

I'm going to go out on a limb here but.........Howard the Duck. My wife and I may be the only two people on the planet who actually enjoy it. Yeah, it's silly, ridiculous, stupid, etc. but there is just something fun and nostalgic about it, particularly the scenes towards the end with Jeffrey Jones hamming it up as an "Evil Overlord" or whatever he/it was called. I liked the music and Lea Thompson is/was hot.

I've never understood the loathing that Return of the Jedi gets. The Ewok scenes are about the only parts of it I don't really care for but they don't kill the movie for me and the rest of the movie, particularly the scenes between Luke, Vader, and Palpatine, as well as the space battle was extremely well done and exciting. I don't know how well liked most of the PT is (although judging from most postings here, not much) but I generally liked the PT, especially ROTS which got nearly everything right and is second IMHO only to TESB.

I liked Knowing (and Nicholas Cage movies in general) but didn't realize it wasn't highly regarded. Maybe it's because of the heartrending conclusion.

I thought that the new Star Trek movie was really awesome even though it did alter/re-arrange a lot of things in the Star Trek universe. I think, though, that's what I liked the most about it- that it didn't use the dreaded "reset" button and instead created a new continuity. It took REAL guts IMHO to do something as seemingly unthinkable as wiping out Vulcan. I definitely look forward to further installments in Abram's Trekverse.

Off the top of my head:

Star Trek - The Motion Picture (DE)
Peter Jackson's King Kong
Spielberg's War Of The Worlds
Spider-Man 3
Bicentennial Man

Tank Girl

Judge Dredd

Starship Troopers (It has its fans, actually)

Hudson Hawk (they probably misadverstised it, people had expected Bruce Willis to make "serious" action movies, which is funny because before Die Hard he was mostly known for comedic parts like Moonlighting and Blind Date.)

I recall enjoying The Core for what it was.

I knew someone else who liked Howard the Duck, but they are gone now. So it's just butlerd and his wife. ;)

Independence Day - Bad computer science. Ridiculously jingoistic. I don't care. It's freakin awesome.

X-Men: The Last Stand - Perhaps not as good as the first one, but I think it's on par with with the second. Plus it introduced me to the incomparable Ellen Page.

All three Star Wars prequels - Sure, they all have some stupid moments, but they are great epic space fantasy. I often find them easier to rewatch than the OT.

The X-Files: I Want To Believe
Speed Racer
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Halloween III: Season of the Witch
Octopussy
Moonraker
The Happening
Space Camp

The Matrix Reloaded. Better action and better ideas than the first. (Third one blew it, however)

Daredevil. And not just because of the Director's Cut either, though it is much better. I think the story, atmosphere and supporting cast more than rescue the film from the lacklustre performance of the leads.

300. Perhaps not 'hated', but widely dismissed; whereas I think there's a good deal going on beneath the (finely toned) surface.

Lost in Space. I don't pretend that this is a good movie. I just love that it throws every sci-fi cliché into one big chaotic hodgepodge.

People who liked Signs, I raise you Lady in the Water. A touchingly offbeat modern fairy tale, and essentially a story about telling stories. I adore the scene where the film critic deconstructs his own death. (And, so that there's no confusion--I hated Signs)

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Well I don't know if people *hate* it, but I've never heard much praise for "Broken Arrow". I know it's a pretty stupid and shallow action movie, but I saw it as a kid and enjoyed it and I can still dig it as a guilty pleasure. The same goes for "Universal Soldier" and "Batman Forever". I don't know how long nostalgia will keep me able to enjoy the latter, though. I didn't mind its interpretation of Two-Face as a kid, but can't stand it now. Nonetheless, I still think Jim Carrey was fun and Val Kilmer did a great job. I guess I could say "Star Trek: First Contact"...but only on the Internet. That's the only place I've met people crazy enough to think there's anything wrong with that perfect masterpiece. :nyah:

Star Trek The Motion Picture
Star Wars Episode One The Phantom Menace (ducks even in this thread)
Speed Racer
Artificial Intelligence
Star Trek Generations
Star Trek Insurrection
Superman Returns
Starship Troopers
Lost in Space
Wing Commander
Super Mario Bros

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. It was my favorite summer movie of 2009 and edged out Star Trek XI in my book.
:shifty:

ST:TMP - Okay I know a lot of people don't hate it, but I don't think a lot of people love it the way I do.To me this s the perfect Roddenberry-esque story. The kind of story Star Trek was made for in the first place.

Airplane 2: A lot of people seem to think this pales to the first one, but I always thought the first one suffered from kind of bad comic timing. It was like they weren't sure how to make that kind of film and were still experimenting. Sort of the comedy equivalent of season1 TNG. I think they really nailed it with Airplane 2 though, one of the funnies films ever.

Unbreakable/The Village: Again I don't think people hated Unbreakable and I didn't love The Village, but I think I have a better reaction than most people. Unbreakable is my favorite M. Night film and probably in my top 10 all time. Jackson is amazing in this performance and Shyamalan does a great directing job, telling much of the story without even using words. I liked the Village. I liked the twist at the end which I found both surprising and meaningful.

Star Trek: TMP, Special Longer Edition

2001: A Space Oddysey
(I didn't know it was reviled as "pretentious" until I started posting here)

Alien³
(it depressed the hell out of me when I first saw it in the theater but its bleakness grew on me many years later)

Spawn
(becoming a super hero almost makes going to hell look cool)

Daredevil (Ben Affleck was ultimately miscast, but Michael Clarke Duncan, Colin Farrell, and the overall story more than make up for the shortcomings in Affleck's portrayal)

Ghost Rider (Three of my all-time favorite movies EVER are Tombstone and the Young Guns duology, and GR, for me, represents what you would get if you tossed them into a blender with a superhero movie like Spider-Man or the old Batman franchise)

Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (For all the guff that both FF films get in terms of casting and the way they brought Doctor Doom to life, I personally think they're great films, and perfectly in the spirit of the old FF cartoon)

Batman Forever (I've mentioned this in the past, but BF really gets unfairly lumped in with B&R as a pair of horrible movies. The film's tone is still very 'Burton-esque', and feels like a somewhat logical extension of both Batman and Batman Returns, despite some shifts in asthetic design, changes in casting, and more of an emphasis on over-the-top theatricality and camp.)

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (As an old-school G.I. Joe fan and child of the '80s, TRoS took me back to my childhood by capturing the feel of the G.I. Joe cartoon that I remember as a kid. I was a bit disappointed that certain characters weren't included, but that's what sequels are for)

The Star Wars Prequel Trilogy (I've attested to this before, but will say it again: I can tell you from personal experience that the PT as a whole - and TPM in particular - is not as universally despised as most people would think, and I count myself among the 'silent majority' of SW fans who can appreciate the films for what they are and not complain about what they aren't.)

Super Mario Bros. (This film is, as I alluded to/stated above, is one of my favorite films EVER. Yes, it's campy, cheesy, and nothing even remotely like the games that inspired it, but it's still awesome.)

Mars Attacks! (I've been accused by certain people of not having what could be considered a 'mainstream' sense of humor, given that I can't stand shows like The Simpsons or Malcom in the Middle, but Mars Attacks! is one thing that I definitely find laugh-out-loud hillarious, even if I'm one of the few that I know who does. The film might have some pretty questionable content, but it's still one of the funniest movies I think I've ever seen, and is definitely a perfect example of Tim Burton at his best.)

X-Men: The Last Stand (This was on TV last night, and while it's certainly not as good as the first two films, it's not nearly as bad as most people think, and certainly doesn't suffer from the same issues as the comparable Spider-Man 3, which was way too overcrowded and suffered because of that fact. The Last Stand does have its own flaws and problems - chief among them being some issues with regards to the continuity between it and X2, but, overall, it's a pretty good third installment, and does a good job of laying the groundwork for future films.)

"A.I."
When I ask people about this one, chances are they've never seen it, but the ones that have seen it, have hated it. But it's my second favorite science fiction film of all time, behind "2001".

"Mars Attacks"
My all-time favorite sf comedy. I generally loathe Tim Burton, but he has accidentally made 3 good movies in his life. (The other two are "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" and "Beetlejuice".)

"Starship Troopers"
I like this film because it can be enjoyed on different levels---you can just sit back and enjoy the action, or you can plug into the satire. Fun movie!

Well I don't know if people *hate* it, but I've never heard much praise for "Broken Arrow". I know it's a pretty stupid and shallow action movie, but I saw it as a kid and enjoyed it and I can still dig it as a guilty pleasure.
The thing with Broken Arrow is that it is the perfect stupid and shallow action movie.

And Batman Forever, oddly, is probably my second favorite Batman movie.

I've run into the opinion that Airplane 2 sucked, as well, and it baffles me. If one liked Airplane, how could one not like Airplane 2? It's more the same (awesome stuff), plus William Shatner's incredibly hilarious turn and Sonny Bono as a air pirate.

My feelings exactly. The chase, although much-criticized today, was awesome when I saw it the first time and, if I look at it with detached eyes, still very much so. Pretty much 90% of Reloaded was well-done--hell, even including the dogpile fight, and the scene with the architect is well-shot if annoyingly written. The ending, taken in isolation, is technically one of the greatest shock endings of all time, because it is pretty much impossible to reasonably interpret it in any way but the manner the next film spends three hours denying. It's weird when the end of a movie presents an earth-shattering revelation that is totally awesome, but the real revelation is actually that the filmmakers had no idea what they were doing the entire time. :(

To all generally: I'm surprised at the love for Mars Attacks. I remember the movie somewhat fondly myself, although I haven't seen it in years. (And one the all time best line readings with "Ha ha! They blew up Congress!")
