Can't be spoilers as it's only just starting, but I must say

Strings are way too loud as usual and what's with that choral shit? There's a great version of the theme in there somewhere but it's been Murrayised. It's also waaaaay to quick.

Yeah, it's different. About the second go round I thought "meh, I'll get used to it and prolly think nothing of it by mid season."

Definitive version of Who theme for me is Eccelston era. Just enough new stuff to punch up the old theme and give it weight. But not so much change that it wasn't instantly recognizable as Who.

As I said in the review thread, drop the horn section in the first eight bars and I can live with it.

That YT link Baci provided - what am I missing? It went to a grainy amateur clip of a fantasy thing ina forest, with the director shouting "Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!" Whaa?

I've heard the complete theme, and stand by previous statement.

As for the credits, the logo and text had a real 80s vibe to me, they sort of wobbled a bit on screen, much like early graphics in the day.

I got the lightning bolt thing too.....wasn't sure if it's the new Rick Roll or what.

Yeah, the first bit is a bit grating, but again, I'll prolly not think anything of it after a few eps.

But now that I've seen the actual VIDEO of the opening.....horrid.

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow. Seriously, after the energetic and dynamic time vortex of the last several years this was unbearable. It's like driving behind someone going thirty miles an hour when you're trying to go 70. And the goofy lighting and slow mo dodging wasn't helping. The vortex effect looked cheap compared to what we've had the last few years.

RTD got it right in that. It should look powerful and energetic. Teeming with energy and it should look like it's a job to travel in it.

Otherwise, still looking forward to seeing the whole ep in a few weeks.

Uh, it was a joke. The new credits is filled with lightning bolts striking the Tardis, etc, so the clip I posted is of some idiot shouting "Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt! Lightning bolt!" under the joke premise that this is Moffat describing what he wants the new credits to look like.

I got the joke, and I think it's entirely appropriate.

While I fully intend to wait until the Canadian airdates to watch the episodes, curiosity got the better of me and I watched the opening credits on YouTube.

I'm definately underwhelmed. Maybe it might grow on me. I've loved the arrangement used since 2005, and the version used since Voyage of the Damned eventually grew on me. This, I'm not sure about.

One main problem is that it seems to be a mixture of different styles. In some parts it sound like the music used during the RTD era, at others it sounds like something entirely new, and at one point it even reminded me of Peter Davison's theme.

The sequence itself is okay. It's still the same basic concept we've had during the RTD era, the TARDIS flying through the vortex. But the vortex looks somewhat cheaper now. A shame, since I thought the RTD vortex was really cool looking.

Suck it up ladies cuz you're going to be hearing it for at least the next 13 weeks. ;)

Was a bit of a shock at first, but after a few listens to the full version, I found its grown on me. We know Moff has a fondness for doing scary stories, and thats what the opening reflects. Like Ghostbusters or Scooby Doo. Its creepy, but with a sense of fun.

^This seems to be the only real one I can find, and it's audio-only. There's a lot of series 5 openings on Youtube, but they're all fan-made. If The Wormhole found a real version with video on there, I'd like to know where.

Also: whoever said it sounded like music for a sofa ad was right on the money.

I just don't get the orchestral bit at the start. Why?

Presumably for the same reason any musical composition is arranged a certain way: Because the composer and arranger thought it would sound good, even if others disagree.

Well, I guess I'm in the minority, but I really like the new opening credits AND the new arrangement of the theme. Granted, I think I am also in the minority that prefers the Series 4 arrangement over the others so what do I know? :)

Is it just me or did they majorly sample the theme from Trial of a Time Lord, just as much -- if not more -- than the 2005-2007 theme sampled the original? If so, I'm tickled, though I'm not too thrilled about the orchestral arrangement in the beginning. At least there's a consistency of thematically borrowing from the past for to make the present:

Even down to the beats (the four taps) and the whistling.

(Ultimately, the song makes the show sound like a superhero from the Harry Potter-verse)

The music will grow on me, as I've said....I don't hate it it...its' just different. The visuals suck tho. How they could not one up the fast paced, bristling with energy time vortex of the first several seasons is amazing in it's lameness. They should've just left it alone if they couldn't top it. Again, we spent four years blasting down the thing and now it looks like something I'd see for on a cheap, late night ad.

Ick, ick ick.

The old RTD theme worked on such a visceral level for me. It brought back feelings of childhood Saturday morning cartoons, or getting excited for TNG. The music and the visuals amped me up for the episode.

Now they're dull, dreary and atonal. Hooray? Whomever signed off on that hot mess clearly has a sado-masochistic streak to them.

I think I've figured out what's missing----the quad "underbeat" isn't staccato enough. It just kind of bubbles along. Without that, the rest just lacks energy.

Agreed to an extent. I have Skull Candy headphones so thanks to all the isolation, I could hear the underbeat, but without it it fades into the horns early on. So it's there, but it just needs to be more pronounced.

I think it's a shame that the theme is playing second fiddle to all that superficial bullshit that Murray Gold has piled on top.
