24 likely to end this season (Official)

Studio and network execs declined comment -- but it's believed that the final decision will be made in the next day or two. Move is not a huge surprise, but still reps the end of an era for Fox.

"24" helped usher in Fox's ratings surge in the 2000s, as the franchise -- along with "American Idol" and "House," among other series -- led the network to the No. 1 spot in the adults 18-49 demo.

But the cost of producing "24" has continued to increase, while ratings have dipped. A one-time critical darling, "24" has also received its share of knocks from critics this season.

The studio is said to be considering shopping "24" to other nets -- but given the thriller's age and pricetag, it's believed interest from other outlets will be limited.

This is probably for the best. The last great season was season 5, and according to many fans the current season is a little lackluster. Let's not even mention season 6.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

It's a smart move, the show has completely stalled creatively. It's become bland, predictable and in many places ridiculous.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Well it's time for Aaron Pierce to be revealed as the mastermind behind every plot of every season and have a final showdown between him and Jack.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Wow, maybe Jack's death flag with his talk to Renee will come to fruition this season.

OTOH if anyone deserves to retire and go off to some island somewhere with a hottie it's Jack.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

With Lost ending and Heroes slowly entering the realm of "Is that thing still on?", the end of 24 might be a sign that the era of heavily serialized dramas might have peaked a while back, IMO...

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Much as I love 24 it's definitely past its prime and this year has been very been-there and let's see some 24 movies now!

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Hopefully this news is late enough that they resist the urge to go nuclear (pardon the pun) and kill off lots of characters to 'start fresh' for the movie. Would be nice to actually let Jack go off with Renee at the end, bookmark the series with another scene of Jack at home, doing the whole domestic thing.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

While I don't mind the less action season we have gotten this year bar the annoying katee sachoff side plot, I do kind of wished they would of jut made last season the last ending with Jacks death.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

As much as I enjoy 24 it's time has past.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Probably for the best. Few shows can last beyond 7 seasons, especially one with such a rigid premise. How many threats can one man face (unless he's James Bond). Jack has now had as many big adventures as Indiana Jones and John McClane combined. And while S7 was a real return to form, this season is definitely the worst yet.

I know 24 has always had grim endings but I hope that they don't do a Prison Break and that they let Bauer have a happy ending with Renee. Unlikely, but here's hoping.

Anyway, it's unlikely to be the last we see of Jack, as the movie is being planned.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

They missed a great opportunity years ago to go in a different direction with the show and make it more something like The Incredible Hulk, with Jack on the run from whatever threatens him...shadowy government or ex evil nemesis...that would be intent on hunting him down and killing him. To me, that would have been a better way to go, it would make more sense that this shit was always involving him, and it would have been able to really delve into the character in ways that make more sense. But instead, they just kept doing the same shit year in and year out.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

While I expect FOX to confirm this before March is out, they have to be careful because apart from CBS, no network can just cut out a show that even with a drop it ratings scores 8 million + with a demo just under 3.0 without big dangers of not being able to replace it properly...

Personally this is great news possibly for Fringe, which should be given the 9pm slot and could do well especially in the 18-49 demo for several years. Lie to Me won't get the gig as its not coming back till June so that signals burn off = Canning.

One thing that amazes me is 24 is becoming more of a show for older viewers with the demo dropping faster than total viewers level would indicate...All the gun action over the years would let you think it would have a strong 18-49 demo especially the 18-34 numbers.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

It's a bad time to announve that THIS season is the last...they shoudl state that NEXT seaosn is the last...so they can set up it for Jack to be "The last day of my life" (and not just the longest day).

That way, instead of silly subplots, they can actually have an arc for Jack that makes sense, and maybe wrap up relationships, or something. (Even though they really had that chance when he was "dying" of a biological weapon).

If anything, he can also have "flashbacks" in the 24 hours as well, instead of silly subplots.

I was going to post this as a separate thing, but they ought to have Aaron Pierce's son (who was mentioned in an earlier season) be Jack's protege, to carry on the mantle in movies or whatever.

I wouldn't mind if they moved Fringe or one of their other dramas to Sunday 9PM. The network has too many comedies on that night.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

I find it incredible that on some forums I'm seeing people condemning Fox for cancelling 24 ("I'll never watch Fox again - they've killed another show I love!" etc). But the damn thing ran 8 years! And lots of people think it passed its prime years ago. I'm all for kicking Fox when they kill a show after, say, 2 years. Or 13 episodes. Or FOUR episodes (RIP Wonderfalls). But there is absolutely no complaints against the fact Fox kept this going for 8 years (except maybe they kept it running too long, just as they did X-Files which should have ended after season 5).

And if the movie rumors are true, it's not as if Fox is closing the door on 24, although I don't know if a movie called "120" (as in minutes!) will do as well!

Re: 24 likely to end this season

I don't know why everyone thinks Jack will die in the finale, Jack will not die. They kill Jack they kill the franchise and they will not do that. This is the end of the show but they will make a movie and Jack will be in it.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

Well it would free up Manny Coto for other things.

Nonsense. Ratings for The X-Files were too strong for it to end after Season 5, 6 or even 7. You could make the case that Season 9 was one too many, but even that season can be defended.

Anyway, how should a network decide what constitutes too many seasons for a particular series? If there's no agreement on the creative merits of a show (and there never is), then the decision might as well be come down to ratings and the cost of production.

Re: 24 likely to end this season

^ But ratings and the cost of production do seem to be determining 24's fate. High cost and low ratings. A bad combination.
