earth bound TREK

I am totally against another TV series at this time. Especially any series that takes place in the old universe. Also, I don't think Paramount will ever green light a series that does take place in the old universe; so its a waste of time, IMO, to even think they will..

But what about an earth bound TREK show that takes place...duh..on Earth, and takes place in JJ's universe. How such a show would be interesting (think Caprica) is beyond me...but good writers can make anything work....

I'm just the opposite. I do not like the JJverse and would love a new series set in the true Star Trek universe. The original ST universe had a galaxy of possibilities for new original series, Paramount didn't need to stab the old-school fans in the back with this new JJverse. Now don't get me wrong, I did enjoy the new ST, it just wasn't really Star Trek to me and alot of other ST fans I know feel the same way.

I have friends that didn't like it. I did, because it has hooked my 15 year daughter, where as TOS-TNG-DS9 and the others bore her...

Paramount will never do another project in that old universe. too much money was spent to reboot, no matter what they say, reboot it. Just as the Joker told Batman "there's no going back..you've changed things"

If I had to decide the next series would take place in the prime timeline and not on Earth. A starbase, perhaps, but not on Earth. I want alien characters.

Anything with Trek in the name sounds like they should be going somewhere else. DS9 was on a station, but the wormhole was a good cheat. Lots of the aliens came to the station. I am not sure about another space station show though, and certainly anything on Earth would be too pedestrian I think.

They should be out there. It should involve new worlds, new civilizations and going boldly if Star Trek is to be different than just any other science fiction about the future. That mission statement of the original Enterprise would be a good thing to stick to if you're going to make new Star Trek.

I think an Earth based story would be boring, even in JJ's "timeline" there seems to be very little problems on Earth (aside from a 12 year old driving cars over a cliff and drunken bar fights), and it is at the center of the UFP. Star Trek to me, has been about being out there, on a station, a starship, etc... It just...wouldn't work...this is why Rick Bermans ideas (thankfully) of an Earth based series/season and/or film was shot down, no one would really like it. Even with good writers, it just wouldn't be the same. It does have some kind of an appeal I can admit, but maybe for a mini arc or something, not a full blown series and not entirely on Earth.

FYI, anyone greenlighting a series, it'd be CBS, not Paramount, unless paramount brought back the TV rights and I don't know?

'hear hear'

In DS9 Quark once said "Earth is nothing but a rotating ball of bordem" and sorry to say that's probably true but that being said I would like to see more of earth in the future instead of just San Fransico. You would think as much as they focus on that city it was the only thing to survive WWIII. Anyway, maybe not an entire series but definately some episodes here and there.

An Earth-bound Trek series just wouldn't be Star Trek...

Earth Trek maybe...

Ground Trek possibly...

Dirt Trek even...

Definitely not Star Trek...

A Star Trek series based on Earth would be boring as hell and would defeat the whole purpose of Star Trek in general!

Unless it was like, Star Trek: 24! About a Section 31 operative who's not afraid to get his hands dirty.. :shifty:

I love that Quark quote. Earth is cool to see every once in a while, as a tasty tidbit, but the main course meal will always need to be in space. If you establish that Earth is a peaceful paradise, you've also established that it's boring. The crazy, unpeaceful flawed galaxy is where all the stories are.

Earth is a peaceful paradise, so there's nothing for S31 to do there. They'd have to spend their time in space anyway.

I like the idea of a planet based series, but something like THIS would appeal to me more.

In fact so would THIS type of Planet based series.

:shifty:

Personally I'm not that interested in Earth.

Your attitude to your own idea shows remarkable self-awareness, very rare in this forum.

Trek with a fixed outpost has been done in DS9, so does work. However Earth would be a bad choice, there is no real basis for good drama floating around a "paradise".

A new trek show really needs to be back to basics - starship, captain, boldly going exploring - and thats that.

Wasn't Trek09 already dedicated to all things Earth a little too much? I mean, it's practically the center of the universe.

Earth in danger is a very good way of making us care about the characters, the only other planet that we would be upset if we saw it destroyed is probably Vulcan, so if a film were to blow that up it would have real emotional impact...

...oh wait, cool. :)

Earth in danger is a very good way of making us care about the characters

What? That doesn't make any sense. Check out the original series and see how many times their modern day Earth is ever the focus of an evil threat. I'm not talking about a galaxy wide disaster, I'm talking about someone or something going to Earth with the intent of destroying it. I don't recall any episode that had that sort of story line. So by your logic, we shouldn't really care about any of the original series characters because Earth was hardly ever in danger.

but good writers can make anything work....

Alright, sure, but they had an infinitely more interesting premise with Voyager and look what happened there. On paper Enterprise had a pretty solid premise too and look where that went. They've taken good stuff and ruined it in the prime universe. I'm not sure I'd be excited about what would happen if they took a mediocre idea to start out with.

Star Trek:90210 has no appeal to me.
