what if the Enterprise-A had a yellow deflector dish in Star Trek VI?

JamesSmith

Lieutenant Commander
what if the producers decided that the Enterprise-A would have a yellow deflector dish (like the refitted Enterprise during the spacedock sequence in ST:TMP) in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country? Can you imagine the Enterprise-A would have a yellow deflector dish?

Re: what if the Enterprise-A had a yellow deflector dish in Star Trek

Well, if the producers decided that the Enterprise-A would have a yellow deflector dish (like the refitted Enterprise during the spacedock sequence in ST:TMP) in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, then I imagine it would have had a yellow deflector dish (like the refitted Enterprise during the spacedock sequence in ST:TMP) in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Seriously missing the point of this thread.

Hey, as long as we're speculating on things, what if Kirk and Spock had wild & crazy monkey buttsex? What would the fan reaction to that have been?

Re: what if the Enterprise-A had a yellow deflector dish in Star Trek

Interesting question, that... What would the fan reaction have been?

Re: what if the Enterprise-A had a yellow deflector dish in Star Trek

Maybe the point of this thread is just to waste our time. That's what it seems like.

Re: what if the Enterprise-A had a yellow deflector dish in Star Trek

Green Lantern would be helpless?

Re: what if the Enterprise-A had a yellow deflector dish in Star Trek

I think the yellow deflector dish is because the deflector was starting up. It becomes blue once the deflector is at its normal operation.

This. And even more so:

Green Lantern would be helpless?
This.

IIRC — and this is going to some discussions that go way back, and may not even exist on the board anymore — but we established that it's fairly consistent within The Motion Picture that the dish is only blue when they're at warp speed; it's the orangey color when they're stopped, or traveling on thrusters or at impulse speed. I know that seems a bit confusing because of so many scenes where the Enterprise seems to be plodding around or through V'Ger, but that's because it's moving at warp speeds relative to the ones V'Ger is traveling at.

It's only when you get to the subsequent films that the dish is blue all the time (except in those scenes in Wrath of Khan where they recycle effects footage from TMP).

Wha...?

Trying to imagine it... yellow... dish... wow, that's out there... um... strains... no, I can't imagine it. The idea is just too far out there, it BLOWS MY MIND.

Seriously, if Enterprise had a yellow deflector dish in Trek VI... it would have made absolutely ZERO difference to the movie, the box office, the fan reaction and more importantly, my levels of "who gives a crap?"

Ah ... so is that what caused the Alternate Timeline or was it Red Matter???

Man that would've made the Col. West Scooby-Doo reveal pale in comparison. Talk about a twist of events!

OK, I've never thought about that -- E was warping the space around it while within an entity that was warping space around IT. Interesting. Why not?

Cool. Kinda like those little wooden Russian dolls that have another one inside, and another one inside of that and so on.

It's the only thing that would render this thread less necessary.

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I probably misstated it. Once the Enterprise was inside V'Ger, they shouldn't have needed to travel at warp speed, and they probably didn't (someone else with more time on their hands can go back and check the dialogue to see what Kirk's orders were ;)). But they were definitely at warp speed when they were traveling through the cloud and later during the flyover.

Wasn't the Enterprise being held by a tractor beam for much of that time?

Are you sure that they were at warp speed while going through the cloud and during the flyover? I mean how would they make turns and stuff while inside the cloud while at warp speed?

Yes.

They approached V'ger from behind, so they were overtaking it. V'ger was zooming towards Earth at warp speed, so to overtake and enter the cloud and get parallel to it, they had to be going at warp.

Also, once in the cloud and approaching V'ger's behind, you can see the impulse engines are off. (Click to zoom the images.)

However, once they are being sucked in, you can see the nav deflector's gone dimmed back to sublight bronze from warp blue, and there's even a faint indication of the impulse engines possibly being on as the ship is tractored on.
