Re: iPad - does prize matter?

lol

I can't edit the poll, but I've done the title

I like the idea of the iPad, but I'm not paying $600 for it.

Matters to some, doesn't matter to those who make it their goal to buy things like this. Doesn't technically matter to me because I'm not planning on buying it.

I see no reason why I would even need an iPad. I don't even use an iPhone or indeed any touchscreen phone. My current phone is a £7.99 Nokia. As long as I can call someone when I need to speak to them I'm happy.

Price matters. If this thing was priced into a reasonable range I may consider it, assuming they add multi tasking and flash support. But paying a 150 to 200 dollar premium for form factor and shine while taking a step backward in functionality is not something I want to do. Perhaps generation 2 of this device will catch up to netbooks in functionality. At that point I may go for it.

Look up the Notion Ink Adam. It's supposed to have flash, multitasking, a camera, run on Android and have 2 times the iPad battery life all starting at 325 dollars.

It also has a screen that is both like an ereader ink screen AND a full color one.

This is what I may buy. And I am a total apple guy. But if I can't listen to Pandora while I surf, or watch Netflix or Hulu, or my sites have huge holes in them...then WTF Apple?

Edited to add: it also has 3 usb and an HDMI out and it does 1080p!

Multi-tasking is a simple OS update away for this thing, so I wouldn't worry too much about that one. As for netflix and hulu, both are working on apps for the iphone (which by default will work on the ipad) and the rumor is that netflix in particular has had an app ready to go since late nov early dec, but held off at the last moment when rumors of the ipad started to fly, and are working to fully adapt their app to work on the ipad.

Also, there html5 war is heating up. Youtube has officially started to put up html5 videos: http://www.youtube.com/html5 and several other sites are looking at shifting to it prior to it's official acceptance. This is interesting when you hear that Adobe (makers of Flash) have been waging a war against it and have done everything they could to hold it's adoption up, including getting it placed on open ended hold: http://ln.hixie.ch/?start=1265967771&count=1

Why would you need that in any PADD type device really?

Multitasking - an update away? That's good.
Netflix and Hulu working on apps? That'd be great. Will apple allow you to use these when they want you to use the iTunes store? We'll see.
HTML 5 - It's not taking over any time soon. Flash is here now and it's not just about video. There are sites where just a menu will be flash and there is a big hole in it. I want to surf the net, the whole net, right when I get my tablet, not in the future.

Why would I want usb? Hook up a camera? Print? Why would I want hdmi? to watch video on a tv or larger screen? To do a presentation?

Look, I'm an apple guy all the way, but the iPad is gimped.

And it doesn't have to be.

Flash is crippling the net at this point and apple knows that, which is why it is pushing html5 like many other companies... It's just that they are the only one with a strong enough footing to take on adobe full on like they are doing. And considering that youtube is already implementing html5 in a live beta, I'd say it's a lot closer than people think.

Wireless... You can do almost all of that wirelessly at this point.

Look, I'm an apple guy all the way, but the iPad is gimped.

And it doesn't have to be.

Gimp now or lose the advantage of improvement later... It's apple business model, and makes a lot of sense from the business perspective even if some people don't like it.

This thing looks like a nice mirror ;)

You are right. Remember, that business model only works if you have bad ass marketing and image to make people nearly lust for your products, which Apple does have. So while I certainly can respect how the business model works, it also tells me to stay the fuck away from the 1st gen release of a product like this from Apple. And since a less expensive netbook can meet all of my needs and many more in this space right now, I don't feel I missing out. I will wait see what the 2nd gen offering puts out there. If it is better than the slew of touch screen netbooks that are about the flood the market, I might pull the trigger then.

Data Holmes, how is flash crippling the net exactly? And, for the sake of argument, let's say it is. That is not the point. It's about content. People don't care what the tech is-they want their shows and sites to be there, that's all. If people cared about tech over content then Hulu never wouldve taken off. I mean, QuickTime h.264 is more stable than flash right?

Well it's about content. That's why hulu took off
when the iTunes store was already there.

Imagine if apple made the iPod and it couldn't play every mp3? Or it could only play a part of a song with holes in it? Could you sit there and say mp3s are not as good as aac?sure! But you see my point. Nobody gives a
fuck about tech over content. Beta was better than VHS and hddvd ha advantages over blu-Ray too...

And about wireless. You can say that just about everything is done wirelessly now but that doesn't make it true. I don't have a wireless printer or camera. In fact nobody I know does either. And I wouldn't hope that I could make a wireless presentation. I'd rather bring a cord for safety.

Again, I'm not an apple badger at all. This house has 3 iPods, 3 iPhones, 2 MacBooks, a mac pro, a cube and an apple tv. And one aver netbook.

But you are making rationalizations. I'm not saying it won't sell and I wouldn't bet against it, but things are a little different now. This is not the mp3 player market or the phone market and people and companies know what apple can do. This needed to be
more iPod touch xl for 500 bucks.
