Romances guys like?

I'm quite fond of rom-coms, provided they're heavy on the com, with enough cynical nods to the audience towards the start and middle, to let us guys know it's alright to enjoy the movie, and it hits the right emotional notes towards the end. I recently saw The Ugly Truth which very much fits this mould, and I enjoyed it.

Another example would be What Women Want, which is a similar rom-comedy with enough appeal to the cynical male audience to be enjoyable. The Secret of My Success would be another, though whether there's enough rom in it for it to be a rom-com is questionable.

I liked that as well.

I like Deathtrap as well... though I'm not sure you can call that a romantic film.

One Crazy Summer
Better Off Dead (not a romantic movie per se, but)

Oddly, I never saw SAY ANYTHING.

Romancing the Stone
Jewel of the Nile

16 Candles
Pretty in Pink (except Annie Potts selling out and becoming a yuppie. WTF?)

Also, I'll toss away my man card entirely and admit I liked Mannequin.

Another one to add to the list:

Splash - it was on earlier this afternoon and always brings back good memories of when my wife & I were dating. :luvlove:

I didn't list Titanic because though I do enjoy the film, it's "romance" leaves me cold. I didn't care for that portion at all.

I've always liked While You Were Sleeping. It was on TV the other day and I happened to catch the end of it...it's really fun.

Saving Silverman-dumb comedy plus a little romance and Neil Diamond.

That's a great one. I didn't think that I would like it but I've seen it probably 10 times and it still makes me laugh.

Another movie with Amanda Peet that I like is A Lot Like Love with Ashton Kutcher. I don't like him all that much but for a romance movie this one is pretty good.

Keeping the Faith is good. A comedy about a priest and a rabbi who both fall in love with their old friend from childhood, Anna.

My favorite romance movies are:

Music and Lyrics (romantic comedy)
50 First Dates (romantic comedy)
Dead Again (romantic drama)

I can watch Music and Lyrics over and over again, it is that funny. Hugh Grant does a great job as a washed up 80's pop star and has a lovely sense of humor poking fun at himself.

^And the songs themselves are pretty good, too. And Kristen Johnson is a total scene stealer as Drew Barrymore's older sister.

Someone upthread mentioned Say Anything, which I actually saw for the first time last weekend. Really good, but I'll have to watch it a few more times before it enters my "rotation."

While some may scoff, I'd say that Superman Returns does an amazing job of subtly, visually conveying that ellusive, inarticulate ache of being in love with someone who doesn't love you back. All of the small stolen glances when she's not looking. It's stuff like this that makes Bryan Singer a master filmmaker.

A few other action movies with love stories that absolutely melt me...

Batman Returns is probably my favorite. I just rewatched it today. The desperate longing between Bruce Wayne & Selina Kyle is so palpable. "He makes me the way I hope I really am." Beyond the epic, doomed nature of their love, they also have some fun romantic banter.
"I'm listed."
"I'm tempted."
"I'm working."
"I'm leaving."

Similarly, Daredevil (particulary in the Theatrical Cut) provides a great love story between 2 inherently broken people who are absolutely surprised to find themselves made whole when they find each other.

The Kyle Reese/Sarah Connor romance in The Terminator includes probably the greatest, most beautiful sex scene in cinema history.

As for more obvious romances...

While You Were Sleeping is a great one. This will likely always be Sandra Bullock's best entry in the romantic comedy genre.

Amidst all the raunchy nudity, Forgetting Sarah Marshall has a very credible romance at its heart. They're just 2 very good people and you can't help but root for them. Also, they're people I would expect to meet in real life, unlike most objects of romantic comedy.

My favorite coming of age romance is Rushmore. I defy anyone not to fall in love with Olivia Williams in this film. She absolutely breaks my heart when we see that tear run down her face as she says, "One dead fingernail."

Keeping the Faith is good. A comedy about a priest and a rabbi who both fall in love with their old friend from childhood, Anna.

Honestly, I hated this movie. There's just something very unseemly about the whole thing. I also don't see Anna having any chemistry with either lead. And why is the Jewish congregation so concerned about the rabbi dating a gentile and yet not concerned at all with the fact that he slept with a woman out of wedlock?

A couple other favorites with some sexuality issues...

Kissing Jessica Stein is a great movie about a woman who is in love with another woman and yet not at all physically attracted to her. It's a happy ending about falling out of love.

Imagine Me & You is very well written and filled with charismatic actors. In some ways, it's the opposite of Kissing Jessica Stein because it's the story of a woman becoming a lesbian rather than falling out of lesbianism. However, the movie has one fatal flaw: She has more chemistry with the guy than she does with the other woman. I commend the movie for having her husband portrayed as a sensitive, 3-dimensional character. But at the same time, they don't do enough to establish precisely what kind of feelings she has for this woman that she doesn't have for her husband. It's probably the straightest "gay" movie ever made.

My favorite romance movies are:

50 First Dates (romantic comedy)
Dead Again (romantic drama)

I can watch Music and Lyrics over and over again, it is that funny. Hugh Grant does a great job as a washed up 80's pop star and has a lovely sense of humor poking fun at himself.

I too would put that on my list of favourites. Hugh Grant playing "Don't Write Me Off" on the piano is one of my favourite scenes of all time.
