Things you're shocked people don't know

I was talking about my own personal preferences. Saying "Most people don't know either..." (in relation to Lookingglassman's post, "That NuBSG is better than ST:TNG") implies that they should. That they're wrong if they think otherwise. I'm just saying I disagree with that statement.

I'm surprise that the majority of the class didn't know the basic history of World War II in my History class.

This wouldn't surprise me. I "studied" WWII several times throughout school, but the only thing we ever learned about were concentration camps and Pearl Harbor.

That's good. I wish I had learned more about history in school. I probably learned about WWII 4 times throughout school, but I never learned anything NEW.

Oh really, the Nazis were bad? Thanks for that.

I learned more about WWII from watching "Band of Brothers" than I ever learned in school.

In conversation with somebody this afternoon, a very simple numbers problem came up, and as the person stumbled on it, I tried to help them through it in baby steps. Only to discover that they just could not seem to get their head around it. I was honestly shocked, as this is somebody middle aged and quite capable of basic arithmetic. Let me describe it to you:

Which number between 1 and 10, when divided by 10, is biggest?

:(

I have always been exceptionally poor at math.

on the other hand, you can ask me anything about prehistoric life or animals :)

I'm stunned how many Americans can't find their own country on a map, let alone locate the state in which they live.

You know, people say stuff like this, but I really don't believe it. Have you actually come into contact with real people who haven't been able to do this?

Can anyone speak more then two languages? I know the Dutch can speak like four which is German, English, French and of course their own.

I had this romantic notion in middle school that I was going to learn Spanish and go to Spain as an exchange student and it was going to be magical... Boy that didn't work out...I took 5 years of Spanish and can't speak it, never got to got to Spain or Chile which I really wanted to do...my life is just sad. :(

In the US there is rarely any reason to speak more than one language.

Don't you have to learn another language at school in the USA?

At high school I studied French for four years and German for a single year. Even today, more than 35 years I can understand simple basic written French.

My sons learnt a little Japanese at school.

Well, I would imagine there is more reason to learn Spanish if you live in the south, but for the majority of the country, English is more than enough to get by.

Depends on the school district. In my school, you had to take 2 years of a foreign language OR something else (which I don't remember), which is hardly enough to make a difference.

I ended up taking 4 and continued some through college, but it's hardly mandatory.

I have.

When I worked for a very large department store, I was put in charge of the Christmas department, and I had to demo the new toys and decor we had for the other managers. One of the gifts we were pushing that year was the GeoSafari globe. It would talk to you and give you a little geography lesson, and then quiz you on certain areas. You just had to press the country on the globe surface. Out of about 7 or 8 adults (Texans, of course), I was the only one who could find Ireland on the globe. I was also the only one who not only knew where Sri Lanka was, but I was also the only one who had even HEARD of if. :sigh: There was one woman who couldn't find FLORIDA. I mean---JESUS. I was horrified.
