It's Mondays back to normal now. Chuck is now back in it's old 8pm time slot. At least something is going right in this world.

So we now have a new status quo set up. Emmett was shot in the head, the poor man is now dead. But Casey has told everyone he took a job in Anchorage. He should go down in the history of famous last words for saying "Pussy" as his last word on a network television show. Too bad the last song he ever listened to was "Hold On" by Wilson/Phillips though.

We have also lost Anna. She did not even get to come back for a closure scene. Morgan said she ran off with another guy. Could that just be a cover story for her having been recruited for field agent work after a recommendation from a certain Col. Casey? We may never know.

And we also appear to have lost Ellie and Devon, the Awesome newlyweds. The doctors have moved out of Chuck's place, and across the courtyard opposite Casey's apartment. Given their schedules as doctors, this has effectively written them out of the show for the most part I fear. We may see them from time to time, but I don't think it will be very much. Good thing they have the characters in a Honda commercial for each episode (I assume we will see a third installment of it tonight), people need to get paid and supporting characters don't get all that much.

They were saying that NBC mandated some budget cutbacks. So I think it is now pretty apparent where those cuts were made. Anna and Emmett canned, Devon and Ellie roles reduced with a side advertising deal. But now we can settle into the new status quo, back in the old time slot, and a run of new episodes each week until NBC shifts to Olympic programming next month.

And now...
Chuck's back in action--but his mission creates an international incident that puts Captain Awesome in danger.

See you all after the show airs here on the west coast.

Re: Chuck -3x03 -"Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muer"-Discuss/Grade <SPOIL

Yeah, we definitely had warning that budget cuts were being made and that it probably meant reduced roles for minor characters. I was really hoping Devon would become more important since he found out about Chuck's spy life.

Emmett's departure was certainly a shock, and Anna's departure is disappointing but not surprising (she was barely in last season anyway). However, I am confident that the minor characters will all serve very important roles come Season Finale time. I would love to see an all-out showdown that brings back all of the minor/recurring characters (Karina, Orion/Stephen, newly recruited Anna, Jill, Harry Tang, etc.).

Re: Chuck -3x03 -"Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muer"-Discuss/Grade <SPOIL

Wasn't Harry Tang supposed to await further instructions from the government in Hawaii, and isn't Hawaii supposed to be where Morgan and Anna were going to so Morgan could train to be a Benihana chef?

Or it could be a curious coincidence...

Indeed, sir. Indeed.

Allow me to be the first to say...

HOLY SHIT.
HOLY SHIT.
HOLY SHIT.

I'm absolutely floored by the end of that episode.

EDIT: Okay, caught my breath. I guess the complaint that they're treading water goes out the window with that ending.

It's very clear that this season is going to be Chuck's spy life catching up with him in big, unintended ways, something mostly ignored in the first two seasons. Awesome's death was the biggest shocker I've seen on TV in LOOOONG time given how light-hearted Chuck (the show) usually is. That was just cruel to introduce Captain Awesome as being someone Chuck could turn to and then just kill him off. Fucking cruel, yet a brilliant way of making the point of Chuck's choice to be a spy as a dangerous choice.

Not dead, just a prisoner of the ring.

Yeah, I know. Someone asked if I had seen the teaser for next week, which I have not since my DVR cut it off.

Being genuinely surprised and shocked by a TV show like the end of tonight's ep (and not having my DVR record the trailer for next week's episode) doesn't happen often in the age of instant spoilers on the internet.

I like Awesome so I'm glad he's not dead. Killing him off would've been a kick in the gut after Emmitt getting offed just two episodes earlier.

^^ It's pretty bad when it can't even last the "next time..." promo.

at the end my wife thought that's what happened too. I told her no way in Hell would they kill that guy. It'd be too depressing.

That's a plot point where I think the budgetary problems influenced how I reacted to the scene. Because they've been letting characters go I actually thought he could be gone....And then I saw the preview.

Let's see how many spoiler tags we can embed in one chain...

Watching the end sequence the first time, I SWORE Sarah told Chuck "Devon's dead" which is why I damn near fell off my couch at the end of that episode. But upon further review it's "Devon..." followed by something inaudible.

I'll get over my bloodlust now, but as IndyJones noted killing off another main to prove just what kind of deep animal manure Chuck's gotten himself into wouldn't have surprised me one bit given the budget cuts.

Re: Chuck -3x03 -"Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muer"-Discuss/Grade <SPOIL

Seeing Sarah Lancaster in that dress only made me think of how well she could pull off being cast as Wonder Woman. She looks like the Lynda Carter of this generation. And they should cast Lynda Carter as Chuck and Ellie's mom too.

Re: Chuck -3x03 -"Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muer"-Discuss/Grade <SPOIL

And they should cast Lynda Carter as Chuck and Ellie's mom too.

I was going to point out that all the parents on the show have been played by actors who played starship captains (Scott Bakula from ENT, Gary Cole from Crusade, Bruce Boxleitner from Babylon 5) -- then I realized that Morgan Fairchild, Captain Awesome's mum, was never a starship captain.

So that works for me!

Re: Chuck -3x03 -"Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muer"-Discuss/Grade <SPOIL

then I realized that Morgan Fairchild, Captain Awesome's mum, was never a starship captain.

Ahhhh.... don't be so fast. She may not have been the captain, but she did play the XO of a training starship in a UPN movie called Star Command back in '96.

Maybe we could get Gates McFadden as Chuck and Ellie's mom, though. That would be, well, awesome.

Spoiler about next episode:

Judging from the description, Awesome has been kidnapped he's not dead, yet.

Close enough for me!

Eh. I dunno. I've never really been overly impressed with McFadden's acting ability, and I think she may be implausibly old to be Chuck and Ellie's mom.

Re: Chuck -3x03 -"Chuck vs. the Angel de la Muer"-Discuss/Grade <SPOIL

^ Really? She's only 5 years older than Scott Bakula.

Another great episode. Looking forward to next week.
