Recommendations for a good blu-ray player?

If you want the whole Game/Blu-Ray package, I'd say PS3 ($300).
If you just want a basic but very capable player, I'd say the Magnavox NB530MGX ($78).

I own the Magnavox and it has worked flawlessly from day one. The image quality is superb, and it plays everything I throw at it.

^ Yeah, they're even working on an actual Netflix application, so that you won't need to have the Netflix disc in the PS3.

The PS3 -with the remote- makes for a nice BD player, but it maybe be a little on the pricey side compared to a stand-alone player.

^ What is it about the PS3 that's so great as a BR player?

Now don't get me wrong, I have had very good experiences with Sony equipment (as I said, my own BR player is a Sony) but I would like an explanation as to why everyone seems to rave about the PS3.

I mean, if you're looking for wireless connectivity, the 560 also has that - it's one of the reasons I bought that player. (Plus I have no particular interest in PS3 games anyway.)

If I remember correctly the big selling points of the PS3 versus other players were that a) the software is easily upgradable b) it has wifi for updates c) it loads quickly. Nowadays this is true of most players (except perhaps the loading part). I think the most recently Sony players have the same SW the PS3 has. My 400-disc changer unit even has the same menus that a PS3 has.

Yeah, mine does too, apparently. It also has the advantages you mentioned, such as upgradeable software, faster load times, and Wi-Fi.

PS3. It's a Blu-Ray player with a gaming system and the internet all in one. Doesn't hurt that you can store oodles of media files on it.

The PS3 can also connect with Windows Media Player... which is infinitely better than iTunes, I think. I like Apple, but geez iTunes is the worst media player ever.

If all you are looking for is a dedicated Blu-Ray player then there are cheaper options than the PS3. If you are looking for more of a do it all device then you can't go wrong with a PS3. The PS3 is a very good Blu-Ray player, it loads fast and the quality is superb. It can also network (wired or wireless) to your computer so you can watch downloaded video, music and photos.
