Borders Books to close December 22nd unless buyer can be found

I've always preferred Barnes & Noble over Borders, but as a big fan of books and reading in general, this really sucks.

It said in the article that all staff members' final day of employment will be Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas indeed. :(

Oh, great. Not only is it the only place I can find Trek books anymore, it also means that I'll be handing out a bunch of worthless gift cards on Christmas.

The only 'Trek book' I ever bought (well, apart from a Reeves-Stevens') is the novelization of the 2009 film, and I had to order even that from the best shop in town; The only shop I'd ever buy a book from anyway (waiting for them to get my copy of Up Till Now at the moment).

But then, I hate buying books in chain-stores anyway - in fact; I hate buying anything in a chain store and make a big deal of trying to keep local stores alive.

Don't you have a really 'local' store to go to? -even if you are the only customer buying 'special' stuff they'll love your business and treat you really nice! -that's my experience anyway!

My local Borders has failed me with respect to Star Trek books the last few years. And several other novel series I follow also.

Amazon on the other hand is my new best friend.

It's a bit depressing to see the place close in the centre of Glasgow, theres already a huge vacant hole where Woolworths used to be :(

On the positive side, I have spent a lot of money on books for the kids with their 60% discounts.

I'm always sad to see bookstores close. I know it's probably because people (including me) are buying most of their books online now, but I still think there's something cool about walking through a store filled with books, books, and more books. It's a very pleasant and comforting environment.

Love it! - and I could live with any book store closing -if it weren't for the most horrible sort of it: the closing of second-hand book stores!!!

It, indeed, wouldn't be a problem to acquire a new book on-line instead of buying it in a local shop... but not being able to find a good used book in a shop filled with the goodies other lovers of books have left for me to find is the most horrible thing I am able to imagine; worst thing evah: when my local second hand book store closed!

All of our bookstores are gone. If I want to go to a bookstore, it's 30 miles in every direction for a Borders, Barnes & Noble or Waldenbooks. The only books you find around here are those at Walmart (poor selection) or the thrift stores (poor selection, oh, and they're usually romance novels). It's a shame. I'm an avid reader and while I can buy books online, there's nothing like going in a bookstore.

Of course there is also the Amazon.com sitye; each item has a "Used" page, where you can sometimes find ridiculously cheap used items. Add shipping, and it'll come under the cost of a new book, to your door step.
