Dr Who casting and rumour-mongering - possible spoiler

Re: Richard Curtis names VanGogh actor.

Can we have the spoiler removed from the thread title? Thanks. :scream:

Re: Richard Curtis names VanGogh actor.

They should have gotten Kirk Baltz, the actor who played Marvin the cop in Reservoir Dogs, to play Van Gogh. ;)

Well, first off Richard Curtis has stated in an interview that Tony Curran is playing his big historical guest character.

Then a thread on GB has reported that TV Cream tweeted that Adrian Lester from Hustle will be the new Master.

If it turns out to be true, the "RTD is a racist" nutjobs on LJ will go into a feeding frenzy, claiming that it's all some big racist plot to equate black with evil.

(No, seriously, have you seen those LJ communities? After WoM all they could talk about was that the black girl was given the zombie villain role...)

I dont know if its worth speculating based on a Twitter post, lets wait till get something even close to semi offical.

If it is Adrian Lester (which I could picture) it will end the debate about if a Time Lord can be black or not, and of course put pressure on the show to role on if a time lord can change sex or not.

Adrian Lester would make a great Master. Actually once my hopes for Paterson Joseph being the Doctor were stymied I started thinking he'd make a great Master.

Re: Richard Curtis names VanGogh actor.

I'm not familiar with any of his work but I prefer seeing actors I'm not familiar with playing historical figures, at least on Doctor Who. *shrug*

Shouldn't that be "Steven Moffat is a racist"?

(I'd hardly call TV Cream a wellspring of accurate information, though.)

And hasn't Lester said more than once that he wants to play the Doctor at some point? Which wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility if he played the Master but it would make it far less likely to happen.

Well we've seen a black Time Lord before, though only briefly. He is present in the flashback of the young Master looking into the schism in 'The Sound Of Drums'.

It's also been claimed a black actor is in one of the crowd scenes in 'The Deadly Assassin', though I've never seen him.

Who the hell thinks RTD is a racist? There's been a ton of minorities (and homosexuals) on Doctor Who, usually in inter-racial relationships!

I have no problem with a Time Lord changing their skin colour. After all, regeneration already changes their height, weight, build, colour and style of hair, so on. Skin colour changing isn't hard to believe at all.

Changing gender, on the other hand, I'm not so crazy about. That would require the loss or growth of certain organs, and that is pushing things for me.

Fun fact: people actually accused RTD of being homophobic(!) because of Rose's line "that's so gay" in Aliens of London.

I wouldn't mind seeing a female Doctor from an alternate universe. Preferably attractive, or even more preferably Romana. :)

As for a black Doctor, I'd have no problem with that as long as he's still the "same" Doctor and there's no reason he shouldn't be.

As for accusing RTD of being racist, that's just hilarious. Then again they've accused the Moff of being a misogynist and he's created some of the most capable and intelligent female characters of the new series.

No idea if it's true or not, but Adrian Lester is a big Who fan and has said he'd love to play the Doctor quite a few times. So with young Matt possibly around for five years or more, the Master would the best alternative...

whilst I dont disagree with the idea that a Time Lord can change colour, I find it interesting that Earth culture feels we need to give all alien cultures a black/white "divide" as if its the most normal thing in the universe.

I think until its proven that Time Lords can change race, we should not worry about it too much.

Re: Richard Curtis names VanGogh actor.

I loved him as the Invisible Man in The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, so I'm looking forward to seeing on Dr. Who as well. I also liked him on Primeval.

You know, in biological humans, one of the big things that decide what physical sex a person is are those XY or XX genes. It seems to me like if a body rebuilds itself cell by cell, somewhat randomly and in a hurry as to avoid death, that it would be quite easy to be re-assigned a different chromosone. I can understand if the Doctor just takes a fall it's likely the regen process can see and maintain the male/white physical thing, but I imagine if the Doctor was almost completely vaporised a sex or race change could occur easily.

Of course, that's looking at it from an in-universe perspective. Out of universe...Well, you're subject to society's views of gender, sex, and race. As humans racial changes are rare and usually something to do with skin pigments -- but the person is still considered being of the race their skin color was at first. Because race doesn't change, of course. And goodness knows sex never changes. ;)
