Deleted Klingon scene available online

RAMA, thanks for posting that! It was awesome! And interesting that Victor Garber was the Klingon. Not a casting i would have ever expected.

The mask/headgear the Klingon had reminded me of what the "dogs" had on in ST6...or am i remembering incorrectly?

Was that the entire scene? Some heavy editing there. It suddenly goes from the threat to use the slug and the Klingon holding hit right next to his head to Nero suddenly being taken back to his cell.

Also, that's not what the slugs were supposed to do, according to what Nero told Pike. So maybe the Klingon was exaggerating. Otherwise, that slug would've killed Pike trying to dig itself out.

The scene was alright, but it was probably better that it wasn't in the movie. We didn't need two conversations about what the slugs do.

Yeah, according to the script, what's shown there is actually TWO different scenes. This is how the tail end of the first half goes (all phrases in caps are how they are written), which comes right after young Kirk drives the Corvette into the quarry:

54B CONTINUED:

A Guard uses TONGS to pull out the most DISGUSTING creature
you've seen from the container: a SLUG with SUCKERS and spikes,
covered in a grimy muck -- it FLIP FLOPS.

KLINGON INTERROGATOR (CONT'D)
Centaurian slugs. Their native planet is
in constant sunlight. As a result,
ther's nothing they hate more... than
darkness

A Guard GRABS NERO'S HEAD and FORCES IT BACK; the second PRIES
HIS MOUT OPEN with his hands.

Another Guard SHOVES THE THING INTO NERO'S MOUTH -- Nero keeps
his eyes open -- furiously determined not to be broken -- as
they FORCE HIM TO SWALLOW IT -- he DOESN'T SCREAM as the
wretched thing makes its way down his esophagus and into his
stomach --

KLINGON INTERROGATOR (CONT'D)
They try to claw and bit their way out of any dark space they're in.

Nero stares at the ceiling in HORRIFYING INTERNAL PAIN -- but
straining to block it out. PUSH DOWN on Nero's wide, crazed
eyes -- TIGHTER as we SLOWLY DISSOLVE TO SEE WHAT HE'S SEEING --
IMAGES OF A WOMAN -- HER BEAUTIFUL, SMILING FACE -- SHE'S
ROMULAN -- LOOKING AT US, EYES FULL OF LOVE -- AND SHE TURNS AND
WE SEE SHE'S PREGNANT -- AND AS OUR MUSIC BUILDS, WE CUT TO:

---

The next part is a really quick sequence, coming after Kirk meets McCoy for the first time:

64F INT. NERO'S CELL - NIGHT

Nero lies on the floor of his cell, semi-conscious, looking like
death. Behind him the DOOR OPENS. Two KLINGON GUARDS enter,
backlit.

KLINGON GUARD #1
The day you've been waiting for is upon
us, Slient One. And look. No sign of
salvation. No sign of change. Just more
pain.

And they both lift his limp body up -- as something miraculous
happens
-- NERO SNAPS TO LIFE AND SINGLE-HANDEDLY BEATS THE SHIT
OUT OF THE GUARDS -- TAKING THEM BOTH DOWN IN TEN SECONDS
-- in
what seems like an instant, he's the only one standing here --
holding both of the Guards' rifles -- which he TWIRLS, badass.

64G INT. AYEL'S CELL - NIGHT

PUSH IN ON THE DOOR as it opens -- Ayel, chained, looks up,
intensely -- and sees that it's NERO who has arrived -- we PUSH
IN TIGHT ON HIM as he SPEAKS FOR THE FIRST TIME:

NERO
The wait is over.

Off Ayel, we CUT TO:

---
So, yeah, we're missing a bunch of that sequence... unless it changed during shooting (though, I doubt it, due to the writer's strike)

Probably should have been in there... but the use of Centauri slugs makes it kind of redundant.

Why? It sets up how and why he knew to use them.

It's also, essentially, the same exact scene as the one with Pike.

The scene is more redundant in terms of narrative. We are told the same information--Nero is looking for Ambassador Spock--again, something we already learned from the opening scene. Sure there's the bit about the "ship with a powerful weapon" line, but overall it's exactly the same information.

Interesting, but yeah, it probably wasn't needed in the film (although it might have helped flesh out Nero a bit, if all the stuff from that script excerpt was filmed instead of just what we see in that clip from the link). It does make a bit more sense with the added material from the script than by itself, IMO.

Kinda neat that Victor Garber is playing the Klingon. Still not sure I like the look of the Klingons, though. I wonder if they have forehead ridges under those masks... perhaps the masks are a way of symbolizing their true appearance, which they no longer have due to the Augment virus. Not really important, perhaps, but I'm just a little curious...

in light of the redudancy, I wonder if one of these scenes, possibly the aired bit with the slugs, was one of the scenes JJ wanted to tweak but couldn't because of the writer's strike.

I kind of suspect that the masks were an easy way to avoid dealing with the forehead thing. Just guessin tho.

True, since canon from ENTERPRISE is still intact and unchanged the "Levodian flu/Augment DNA" mutation is still official within the TREK universe...so having helmets on the Rura Penthe guards was probably a convenient way of having to explain why those Klingons either did or didn't have ridges in the wake of the 22nd century event.

Yeah, you guys are missing the critical point: these Klingons weren't constantly babbling about "honor". Which is a good thing, considering the high likelihood of Klingons appearing in the next film.

And dont forget...in the TOS era the Empire seemed less concerned with ancient honor codes than it would later on in the Trek canon. So in a way this fits in with the way the Empire was portrayed in the classic series even if the makeup and costumes are a lot more intricate and expensive to create.

I dunno...it's a nice scene, but it's hard to crap on the decisions made when it was a good movie that was financially and 'critically' successful.

I must admit, since we dont find out until Nimoy's mind meld with Pine that Nero was even IN Klingon custody on Rura Penthe for all that time it would have been nice for that brief four or five minutes of Klingon footage to have been left in...for the sake of context.

I have only one question: did they mix Delta Vega up with Rura Penthe? In the movie, Delta Vega is the ice planet, and Rura Penthe is this?
