"Way To Eden" always seems to get a bad rap

I just watched for the first time in years, and I thought it was great! Much more balanced than I remembered, with Spock being so sympathetic to their worthy goal of finding a planet to live non-technologically on.
If only the had found the Baku's planet...
Why do some come down on this show so harshly for, I wonder?

I don't know. I like it, and I'll freely admit so. As far as good ideas go, it's not far up there, but it's fun. And when someone asks what it's about, you can say "Space Hippies." How cool is that?

Honestly, I always found the 'herbert' chanting and Adam's God-Awful Fake Folk Music (TM) to be the real detriments. It's not an awful episode, from a writing standpoint, but it's really directed and produced badly.

I always liked the episode. Nothing wrong with people singing badly; most people sing badly. And it wasn't that bad. Spock's 'tude was a wonderful breath of fresh air in the otherwise so militaristic and conservative show, too.

Perhaps it stretched credibility a bit that this week's Batmanesque supervillain could use his one trick to bring a starship crew to their knees, sometimes literally so. But not too far, I guess. For once a non-formulaic threat, and one that didn't jeopardize the entire universe or anything; all that was at stake were the lives and dreams of the villains of the week, which is always heart-wrenching.

Funny, Conservatives I know rate TOS as a Socialist utopiaian wet-dream; Liberals call it militaristic & Conservative.
As an Independent, I call it just cool SF.

I always thought this episode was OK. Not brilliant or anything, but I do think it has an interesting concept - the desire of people from a highly industrialized society to get back to nature. And I enjoyed watching the crew realize that they had a bit of that desire themselves. It's kind of hackneyed now, maybe, but I don't think it was at the time it first aired. And many of us still have that desire today.

While the songs are of course very dated - all but the absolute best 1960s folk music wears very badly, and this most definitely isn't anywhere close to the absolute best - I don't think they're bad per se, and I don't think the singing is, either. Jeez, I've heard worse from people who earn their living singing. And the rest of you have, too. Admit it, now!

I always felt like this was an episode where the season 3 departure of GR and the rest of the writing support staff showed up very clearly. The episode was thisclose to being really good. One or two more rewrites from the write people and it might have become one of the strongest entries of the season, but as it was, close...no cigar.

I am a fan of 60s nostalgia in general so even though the episode really dates itself with the whole Space hippies idea this is one of my favorite episodes. Plus I think the little blond singing and playing with Spock is really hot and cute!
