TRW: "Beneath The Raptor's Wing" review up @ Trekmovie.com

I just read the review I can't wait to get this book.Sounds like a exciting book. I pre-ordered it early.I agree what was mentioned at the end of the review that they hoped Micheal & Andy would collaberate on another Enterprise novel.I hope so .:techman::)

Bill Hunt's (from the Digital Bits) review sounds really promising. I pre-ordered this a few weeks back. I think we're a month behind the US here in Britain, with the release date. So I'm going to have to try and dodge those spoilers suddenly everywhere real fast...

Looks like pretty much everything I ever wanted to be covered, actually will be... The Enterprise and its crew given a prominent role in the Romulan War (unlike that proposed Star Trek: The Beginning movie script from Erik Jendresen, which consigned the NX-01 to a holiday on Risa, while Shran got a cameo! WTF!) and also fleshing out other perspectives too (Earth Starfleet, Romulans, Vulcans, Andorians). Not surprising that relationships onboard the ship aren't deeply explored with so much to get stuck into. I can't wait to read how the MACOs are involved and at this point, I'll probably be accepting of whatever explaination the author comes up with to address certain well known thorny issues... such as it going down in history that neither side or ally saw each other. I'm sure there are good reasons why certain events would be kept out of official records.

I think they're gonna have to stretch pretty far to explain how MACOs can fight Romulans in close combat and not notice how much the bodies look like Vulcans.

I guess I'd have the MACOs constantly getting their butts kicked off of various planets, so they're always retreating, and the Romulans wearing helmets. Might make a good scene with a MACO in hand-to-hand with the Romulan, knocking off the helmet, saying "Jesus, you're Vulcans!" and then getting killed before he could tell anybody...

Somehow I doubt it'll be that good ;)

Well, since Robau and the Kelvin bridge crew didn't look surprised to see an evil Vulcan-looking non Vulcan on their view screen, the need for all this "no one knows what the bloody Romulans look like" crap is long gone.

Personally, I find the very idea of waging a war without ever seeing your enemy's face simply ridiculous, and as much as I love "Balance of terror," I think ignoring this nonsense is completely forgivable.

Following canon to the letter at the expense of common sense is seriously retarded, IMHO.

While I will say that having a ground war, or any conflict, with Romulan troops without actually seeing their faces might be hard to pull off in a believable way, it could be done in such a setting, and I would say that there is plausible and advantageous reasoning for the Romulans to stay hidden. Although, in one respect, the similarities they share with the Vulcans being revealed could lead to distrust, by Earth’s Starfleet, of the Vulcans and render a split between the two allied planets being an excellent way to "divide and conquer" ~ It also could compromise any infiltration the Romulans have positioned on the Vulcan home world and perhaps beyond, including any intelligence operatives embedded in Vulcan society and Government that are collecting valuable information about Vulcan, Starfleet, and any other united planets, continuing to give Romulus an upper hand in any conflict that arises and influence in their enemy's affairs, and a better chance to have the UFP kingdom practically handed to them. It's most likely the basis of their military strategy from the onset, and if not, could be beneficial to their cause at some future point. This is the race that invented cloaking technology after all and utilize it routinley, they seem to go to great lengths to remain concealed. Perhaps even the physiological advantage is worth while; if no one knows what their enemy looks like, what the mind conjures could be far more intimidating then their actual appearance. So remaining the intentionally unseen adversary has a basis for their rationale.

It's relatively spoiler-free, and promises a pretty damn good novel, however it appears that with the loss of Andy Mangels, the relaunch series weakened on the emotional side (so don't expect much romance and buddy moments).
Mangels was overblown and soapy so ... maybe this is one worth reading! Yay!

An ugly thing to say, considering the (still unclear) circumstances under which Mangels left (he mentioned serious health issues etc.)

BTW, I don't know if Mangels actually did get back to bar tending (like he said he wood, if the worst case scenario happend), but I hope he gets a writing gig soon.

For those of us in the US, Amazon started shipping the book today.

I agree that Mangels departure is a loss.

According to the Amazon site the release date is Monday Oct. 19 and shipping estimate is 7-13 days. I ordered it on Kindle, due to deliver on Oct 20.
I received my shipping notification yesterday that it shipped 10/17. Looking forward to it.

I called my local Barnes & Noble store and they said my book should be coming into their store Tuesday or Wednesday.I'm looking forward to finally being able to read it.

I wonder if that means they are already out of stock? Not good because that would mean they don't expect many sells and did not stock much.

No, amazon is just careful in giving shipping estimates. People are usually happy if their order ships earlier than anticipated but quite angry if it ships later. So better safe than sorry. I don't think any of my amazon orders ever shipped as late as they originally said it would.

I wish every company shipped as well as Amazon. I fully expect to have my book no later than Wednesday 10/21.

(he mentioned serious health issues etc.)

Sorry if he's ill and hope he recovers soon.

Since he's a comic book/graphic novel writer (that seems to be his greatest love), I betcha there's plenty for him to do where his talents are best used.

Paul Simpson editor of StarTrek magazine said he hired Andy Mangels to help write articles and do research for the magazine I saw his name listed for a Ds9 article in the last issue so he has gotten some work.:techman:

I plan on getting mine tomorrow
Someone who got the noveland Skipped ahead said that Trip &T'Pol do spend time together.
