Holy !@#$, Disney buys Marvel Comics???

Fortunately for Joe Q., it's not really his job to convince every fanboy on the Internet that this is good news.

Fuck. For some reason it was always a point of pride that Marvel was its own entity, unlike DC.

Just...fuck.

Except that it hasn't always been. New World Entertainment owneMarvel Comics for some years.

True, but it was a point of pride until recently. Plus, Disney is not just any company.

Once they get their hands on you...

Everyone..

I got a another reply that I find it so frighteningly.

SHIT! I guess this means will be seeing the marvel shows pulled off nick! Also it means the end of comics as we know them.

And Disney is not done yet. I heard rumors of them going after DC comics!

That's what he told me from another forum.

Wouldn't happen. Haven't you heard of the Superhero Anti-Trust Act?

No. I haven't heard of the superhero anti-trust act. What is it?

Hey aren't there antitrust/anti-monopoly laws in the US anymore? I mean if the mouse does buy out DC then who's left?

Though I strongly doubt this means that Sony (Spider-Man) and Fox (F4, X-Men) suddenly don't own the movie rights to those characters anymore.

I suspect Marvel's distribution deals with Paramount and Universal for the various Avengers-related movies (Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, Avengers and the several other movies Samuel L. Jackson is signed up for) are still in place as well.

I would imagine those movies would simply gain another production partner and another studio logo added to the opening. Lots of movies are from multiple studios. Look atWatchmen.

The Reagan-era Republicans have spent the past three decades systematically dismantling all the rational economic safeguards and restraints that were instituted after the Great Depression, essentially reverting the American economy to a 1920s level of maturity. That's why the economy collapsed last year, falling victim to the exact same behavior that led to the Great Depression.

Why would Warner Bros sell exactly ?

Anyway, more from Joe Q:

I haven't seen this much excitement in the Marvel halls since... well, ever!

Everybody take a deep breath, all your favorite comics remain unchanged and Tom Brevoort remains grouchy.

If you're familiar with the Disney/Pixar relationship, then you'll understand why this is a new dawn for Marvel and the comics industry.

It feels like Christmas morning.

Whatever deals and contracts Marvel has in place will still be in place. They may not ger renewed when the time comes up though. And who cares if a Marvel show is on Nick or ABC Family or Toon Disney. Same difference.

And there's no way Disney is going to wrest DC comics away from Time/Warner.

And how would this be the end of comics as we know them? Anyway, look at the sales numbers...Marvel and DC have been working on killing off comics for years now.

On the plus side, Spider-Girl's new comic may last more than a year this time, considering that it's considerably lighter fare than the rest of Marvel these days.

Tell that to die-hard fans.

Pretty fun that "Marvel Super Hero Island" is a key part of Universal's Islands of Adventure in Orlando... :)

Walt Disney Co. Chief Financial Officer Tom Staggs told analysts Monday that Marvel's current third-party licensing deals with such studios as Sony and Fox will remain in place under the terms Marvel agreed to in those transactions.
(Fox is owned by News Corp., the parent company of Dow Jones & Co., which includes The Wall Street Journal and MarketWatch, the publisher of this report.)

As those agreements expire, Disney will consider bringing those deals in-house, or could pursue other third-party deals, depending on the circumstances. Disney is also looking forward to bringing several Marvel characters to the big screen that remain less known to the general public, Staggs added, speaking during a conference call.

This is indeed very interesting and disturbing all at the same time. Marvel most likely will not be able to operate as independently with the characters from now on. They to will have a big brother like DC in Warners. I only hope that Disney does not become so narrow and only focus on 2-3 characters like Warners seems to with DC, only letting out a few other properties every so often.

Let's hope they get rid of Queseda in the process.

That would be a definite upside. One can dream.
I give a third 'YEA' to that idea.

Christopher stick to what you know, which is writing fiction. There have been some 11-13 recessions SINCE the Great Depression. Sadly a recession is a cyclical element in our capitalistic climate, they can't be avoided and severity can't be predicted. Its not something that can be pinned one political party or administration(although that happens) you biased partisan.

Back to Disney buying Marvel now kids.

I think this thread is going to provide more amusement value than ten years worth of Marvel back issues....

Sorry, but Chris is 100% correct.

There's no way any deal won't pass antitrust muster anymore. The SEC is primarily stocked full of people who don't believe in regulating anything.
