Xena fans, I've got sad news...

Exclusive: XENA Movie Just Won’t Happen, Says Creator Rob Tapert.

Rob Tapert, the co-creator of television’s Xena: Warrior Princess, has given up hope that there will ever be a live-action feature film version of the classic show, at least not any time soon or starring series leads Lucy Lawless and Renee O’Connor.

I'm very sad that there won't be a live-action movie.

Yeah, I'd pretty much given up on this happening a few years ago. The show has been off the air far too long and the fanbase simply isn't there any more.

Besides, I've always wanted a Hercules movie more anyway.

I know how Lucy Lawless looks these days, but how does Renee O'Connor look?

Here it is. Is that what you were looking for?

Too bad. I always thought it was a long shot, but . . . oh well.

Maybe in 2025, we'll get a TREK-style reboot starring a whole new cast.

The DVD sets aren't being made by the manufacturer anymore either. You can still buy them from Amazon resellers, however.

Doubtful they'll look decent in high def, they weren't shot for it, so they'll look SLIGHTLY better, but nothing to warrant the extra work involved. Although at least on BluRay they can pack more episodes on the disk, so that's nice.

I kinda felt that the Xena ship had sailed a long long time ago. If it was a few years after the show ended, maybe. But the craptacular finale she had, kinda made it unlikely you could have more adventures... and by that point the Xena character kinda ran her course. The show wasn't as fun as it was for the first few years. Got too dark, eliminated a lot of what made the show a fun guilty pleasure. Even my MOM got into Xena back in the day. She still has a wav for her e-mail "You've got mail... Oh goody." that starts out with the aol guy and then goes to Xena going "oh goody". Heck she even bought a couple of the 12" dolls and didn't mind when I bought Xena action figures LOL.

And we still repeat some of the famous lines.

"I have many skills." - Xena

"Mmmm. soft. Like baby monkey!" - Joxer

"Here fishy fishy fishy!" Xena

So... I mean in some ways some of the old fans MIGHT go for a new Xena film if it was similar in tone to the early days, not the confusing later seasons. But I think both Lucy and Renee have kinda outgrown the characters. They COULD pull it off, but only if they did it as "older Xena and Gabrielle". Ted Raimi though doesn't look like he aged a day. Bruce Campbell would be down for it, you know he loved the role. But you can't have Aries... which sucks. Sorbo... eh... he's too controlling. Alexandra Tydings... dunno... what has she done lately. I know when I saw pics of her from some convention a few years back, she looks more MILFy than ever. But the problem with the way latter seasons left us, is that none of the others are still around, so you can't just continue where it left off.

Xena just wouldn't work, unless it was some kinda story reboot. But even then people would bitch that its ignoring the history. So yeah, sadly... Xena would not work as a live action. Good anime style... maybe. MAYBE. Since you can go anywhere in her timeline. Which might be bad. Who knows, maybe they can work in a Xena short for the new Heavy Metal movie LOL... "Xena Vs the Loc-Nar!"

Whew. From the thread title, I was afraid somebody had died. As for the actual topic, it's not so much news as a continuation of the status quo.

That's even more sadder than I expected. What about blu-ray? Should Xena to be upgrade to high definition?

I wouldn't put it totally out of the realm of possibility. The Highlander TV series is getting a Blu-Ray release.

Barring a Xena movie, what about some kind of Joxer & Autolycus spin-off?;)

I don't really see this as being surprising. Both Lawless and O'Connor have moved on from Xena -- heck, Lawless has physically changed so much over the past few years that I don't even see her as being the same person (that's not a criticism - she still looks great).

Plus, with Kevin Smith (the fellow who played Ares) no longer with us, the family is no longer complete anyway. I was half expecting to see a Xena movie with a new cast and a reimagining (which I'm sure would have gone over like a lead balloon) around the time the rumors of a Wonder Woman film were hot and heavy.

I'm not going to be too sad if there's no Xena movie. It had a good run, and let's leave it at that (though if a company like Big Finish were to get Rene and Lucy together to do some audio adventures, that would be cool.

I've never been able to figure out what the hell the writers were thinking when they had Bruce Campbell signed up for a series, but went with Jack of All Trades instead of Autolycus: King of Thieves.

Two possibilities, not mutually exclusive:

1) "We've spent years in the Herc/Xenaverse, and now I want to try something new."

2) "If we make an Autolycus series, we'll have to pay royalties to Doug Lefler, who created (our version of) the character. If we create our own character, we get all the royalties."

Besides, if they had made an Autolycus series and it had been as dreadful as Jack of All Trades, it would've ruined the character.

I too was afraid this thread would be about the passing of someone involved in the show... glad to see that's not the case; I'm still saddened by Kevin Smith's untimely death a few years ago.

As for this news, well it's too bad, but not entirely unexpected. Really, both Xena and Hercules have been out of the public consciousness for a while now, and at this point, I'd have no reason to think that a movie would fare any better than The X-Files: I Want to Believe did.

Perhaps it's just as well -- I loved Xena, but I'm not really clamouring to see a movie. I mean, I'd welcome one, but I think the moment has passed. Plus, there's no guarantee that it would be any good (true, one can say that about anything, but unless they've got a really good idea for a movie, I'd prefer they just leave the series as is).

It's been off the air for eight years, was there still really hope within the Xena fan-base that there might be a movie?
