Left 4 Dead

Not too fond of the modded servers. But once in awhile they can be interesting. Just yesterday I played a game that pretty much had every mod out there. Weapons either had the firepower of small cannons or used incendiary ammo, unlimited mollys and pipes, 700 Health, and players could leap around the map like Superman.
There was something fun about being able to leap atop buildings and explore parts of the map you'd never seen before. Apparently if you go over a fence behind the church in DT, you can jump right into the next town level (though with a lot of the tiny details missing, and you died if you went too far). Then of course there was watching Smokers snagging people out if midair, and flaming Hunters bouncing a hundred feet straight up. Wouldn't want to do it everyday, but once was kinda funny. :)

I'm sick of the vote-kick system being abused. Makes me furious.

I hear ya. Its fine if someones being an ass. But getting kicked as a noob seriously ruined by interest in playing Vs early on.

Again, I guess its all about getting the right team. Don't be afraid to bail out of a game if you don't like the tactics being used.

^I did play one modded game where the Infected side could place up to 9 Witches throughout the campaign.

^:) I've seen that one.

I have the game on PC and Xbox 360. I've not experienced any cheating on 360 but then I don't play console games online much anymore.

As Versus tends to be a bit biased towards the survivors even without cheating, the Witch Mod does level the playing field a little bit - especially when you put two of them in the lift on No Mercy.

I heard about a new monster for L4D2-something called a leaper. I'm going nuts trying to find out more on the Net. Any help out there?

^I haven't. The only ones I know about are the Charger and the Spitter.

Where can I read up on the Spitter?

Here.

Basically, she spits out a large pool of green liquid that turns red and then inflicts damage upon anyone who steps in it. She's designed to stop people camping in rooms.

In theory, the attack should split up the survivors making it easier for Hunters (who will get a slight visual redesign in L4D2) and Smokers to grab stragglers.

Not really interested in L4D2. It mostly seems like an unnecessary cash cow to me.

Nobody asked. Thanks for that completely pointless commentary.:shifty:

Actually, since this thread is about L4D (the original) your commentary is useless. Mine is warranted since I started this whole discussion.

^You've answered your own question then. You asked whether or not it was worth buying and now you've gone off on some Valve-hating detour.

So, don't buy Left 4 Dead or Left 4 Dead 2. In the meantime, I and millions of others will carry on enjoying last year's game of the year, the upcoming extra campaign DLC for it and the sequel.

I would say that if Valve starts to release a new game every year like Call of Duty I would agree with you.

Right now I'm willing to trust them with Left 4 Dead 2. Valve didn't buy Turtle Rock Studios until about 10 months before they released L4D. That isn't a lot of time to make major changes, especially since the game was in development for so long (it was first announced at the end of 06).

If things had gone to plan with the Half-Life 2 episodes, we would have had one a year with those as well. Would I have bought them still ? Hell yes. That's because I trust them. Bad games developed by Valve = Zero.

With the Call of Duty games, at least they are alternating between series and developers. Modern Warfare in 2007, World at War in 2008, Modern Warfare 2 in 2009 meaning that there's a two year gap between Modern Warfare games.

Both series are a long way away from Activision releasing five console Guitar Hero games in just over one year (World Tour, Metallica, Smash Hits, 5, Van Halen).

The only problem I have with the success of Left 4 Dead is that I'm worried about the effect it's having on Episode Three. I was hoping for that this year but there's still no sign of it and Gabe Newell won't even talk about it. I've seen him completely cut off interviewers who ask him about it.

Uhm, I did buy L4D. But I can see you're only going to respect "OMG VALVE IS AMAZING! L4D2 WILL BE AMAZING!!!" opinions.

No, I'll respect well founded opinions that are based on a little more than reactionary rage and totally incorrect assumptions that Valve will no longer be supporting the first game with the DLC they promised.

Calling L4D a "cash cow" is ridiculous in the face of the actual cash cows that exist in the games industry. Or are you seriously comparing Left 4 Dead to the likes of Need for Speed and Guitar Hero ?

L4D2 is every bit as much of a cash cow as your average yearly title. The fact Valve churned it out in less than a year proves it's as stated. That doesn't diminish the quality of the original, and yes they are releasing crash course, but that doesn't forgive the crappy turn of events. It's always possible to find worse examples like you listed, but that's like saying Star Wars: Attack of the Clones is good because the weekly SyFy B-Movies are still airing.

So, your argument is that Valve are a for profit organisation ?

Sorry, but L4D2 contains as much new content and new ideas as you'd expect from any sequel. If Valve had finished the game and left it rotting on a shelf for a year to make the whingers happy you still wouldn't get any more.

Companies like Stardock have much better business practices. They can't afford to fuck over their fan base because a huge dip in sales would send them out of business. Valve can afford to be much more pigish about stuff and pull stunts, knowing that people like you will eat it up and fervently defend them. Although I will say that Valve isn't quite as bad as Blizzard. Hopefully they won't sink that low...
