what if Janice Rand died during TOS's first season?

what if Janice Rand died during TOS's first season in the final episode: Operation -- Annihilate by a Denevan neural parasite?

But that would deprive us of one of the yummier yeomans, the lovely Zahra Jamal.

Maybe poor Janice could have been on of Lenore's victims in The Conscience of The King? Either would be better than that pointless walk-on goodbye she got.

Sacrilege! Janice should never have been written out! NEVER I tells ya! She was the principle heroine and should have remained so. I really wished they'd brought her back for a guest shot or two in the later seasons. It's a real shame she was relegated to cameos and a travesty that she wasn't written into the new franchise!

Her action figure is indeed a beauty - Chapel figure is coool too. I've even ordered spares to have a crack at TMP and TWOK customs, although the TMP custom is kind of dependent on them producing a second two-pack of TMP figures featuring a female duty uniform (a Decker & Ilia two-pack would be a dream).

To summarise: Janice rocks.

That is all.

^I agree, on all points, save the action figure stuff....:p

Yeah. They really should've kept her. I'll be ticked off (to say the least) at "The Executive" who assulted her for as long as I live....

She's one of my all-time favorite Trek characters. There was so much potential with her...and then...she vanishes without even a goodbye, or even a line in any ep establishing where she'd gone....:(

It would have been like Henry Blake dying on M*A*S*H. It would have darkened the rest of the series significantly.

It would have been a very gutsy thing for them to do in 1967. Alas, what might have been.

Pike's male yeoman had just been killed off-screen in "The Cage", which is partly why Captain Pike was disgruntled about the arrival of Yeoman Colt.

The story of the male yeoman, Dermot Cusack, is told over the first few issues of Marvel/Paramount's "Early Voyages" comic series, recently collected as an omnibus by IDW.

Yeah, ditto that - and...

...if Rand was killed, how did she later turn up in the movies...? :wtf:

I mean it would have been gutsy to kill off a reaccuring character who's been around for a year.

I would have been disappointed, I rather like Janice, but her face annoys me... maybe that's why I like her so much. lol She's saucy.

I doubt this...Rand simply wasn't that important...as evidenced by her gradual exit from the series (e.g. being reduced to cameo appearances such as her role in The Conscience of the King.)

Her reduction to cameo in that episode is because she was simply to ill/unreliable at the time, fighting an addiction to diet pills and alcohol. GLW was signed to a lucrative 13-week contract, which meant she was an expense to the show even when the writers didn't give her much to do, whereas Nichelle Nichols and Majel Barrett were paid as day-players. Had she been healthier, or been able to complete the season, the writers might have developed her character more.

Rand was written out of early drafts of "The Galileo Seven" (replaced by Yeoman Mears) and "Dagger of the Mind" (fulfilling the role eventually changed to Dr Noel's character), the two episodes she calls her "least favourite".

Yeah I always assumed that her departure was an accumulation of a number of factors - one of the main ones being that she was expensive compared to the day players, but I'm sure her declining health and the alleged sexual assault also contributed. I didn't know she was due to be in the Galileo Seven though. I supposed potentially 80% of the Yeomen featured after Rand exited could have been played by Whitney had she stayed plus she would probably have had a few more episodes that would have been written with her character in mind, like Charlie X.

I think her loss did damage the female dynamic in the show. Although Ann Mulhall was probably my preferred untapped character (it was a shame she didn't feature in more than one episode), I really wish Grace had gone the distance, even if only appearing in one episode in each half of each season as a guest star.

Yes, I know all of this as well....my point was that, ultimately, Rand (and GLW) was very replaceable -- as evidenced by her elimination from the series.

What happened to GLW was horrific. She was treated very poorly by the show. It is also a shame that her personal demons created a constant struggle for her as well.

However, in the end, who really noticed when the character was no longer there? I think we have some "2009 revisionism/glorification of Rand's role in the series" going on in this thread. The substitute series of "yeoman of the week" usually did as good a job as GLW.

That statement would be true of any of the TOS cast except the big 3 and Scotty. I don't think it reflects badly against Grace. I'm also not so sure that the Yeomen of the week would have been as good as Grace. I think they'd have been given more memorable things to do if Rand had been there, partly because some of the Yeomen were incredibly bland and partly because the studio would have wanted to get its money's worth! I certainly missed her and if I recall correctly, my gang at school did too. We used to have debates about her more than any other character beyond the big 3 - largely because she was so gloriously camp and naff. Go Grace!
