H1N1 (Swine Flu) in my hometown. Holy crap!

What's his face

If I stop updating my status all of a sudden it is because I caught swine flu and tranformed into a pig and cannot type anymore due to the hooves.

The affected camps are Camp Ramah, a Jewish education camp attended by more than 450 young people in Utterson, near Bracebridge; Olympia sports camp, just outside Huntsville; and Camp Tamarack in Bracebridge.
Luckily I'm safe here in my house. No Swine Flu for me! I'll just stay here and - oink - be safe and - oink - OH NO! I caught the -oink- swine flu!

OINK! OINK! OINK!

That's good.

From what I understand deaths are rare. It's just like getting a normal flu - you're sick in bed for a few days then you get over it.

That is, except for the fact that you are transformed into a pig.

My daughter had it a few weeks ago. She was very, very, and did I say very tired.

Neither DH nor I got it, which was good as I was traveling not long after that.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt ... literally, although it's a bit wrinkly:

Jewish Education camp? Did not know Jews had those.

Swine flu's virtually everywhere now (there's a reason it's called a pandemic), esp. in the UK. Several of the girls at work are already off sick with it, and this morning I reckoned I was going down, though I've perked up a little since. This is only week 1 of H1N1 really going past the knee of the curve, and already it's causing chaos in terms of staffing the wards.

I'm starting to take it more seriously now that I've had a chance to look into some of the data. One estimate is that 10-15% of the workforce will be off sick at any given time by August... leading to a multi-percent hit to GDP. If true, so much for a recovery from recession this year.

The envelope for mortality figures is a bit higher than regular flu, and the demographics of mortality are different too. OK, this isn't going to be Armageddon, but it's likely going to be a LOT worse than a regular flu season for a variety of reasons.

I'm going to get some tamiflu at some point over the next few days, just to have a bit available should I get ill...

Funny you mention all this swine flu pandemic stuff... at work, we had 5 confirmed cases last month, all of whom were kept off work and given tamiflu. No doubt there are several more now. I'm off work at the mo, but for other reasons and not due to swine flu.

Unfortunately, my plan to switch careers and become a medical virologist seems to have happened at the worst possible time... :guffaw:

Fun fact: you're more likely to die driving to the doctors to get your vaccination than you are from swine flu.

There were 67 basic cadets at the Air Force Academy with confirmed cases, which really sucks for them because if you miss more than 8 days of BCT you have to take a year off and try again the next year.

Swine flu's definitely hit my area but I haven't gotten sick yet.

Someone in my brothers class is off with the swine flu.
And if they come up with a vaccination my youngest brother and my dad will be near the top of the list for getting it because my dad has had a by pass and my brother is asthmatic but we not overly concerned at the moment because there not a lot you can do to stop it.
To be honest if i were to get the flu i probably just think it's the normal strain and would not bother the docs unless i was having trouble breathing.

That stuff is awful. It made me so nauseous every time I took it, and I'm usually not that sensitive to side effects of meds like that.

Ugh, I feel ill just thinking about it.

My friend's co worker had swine flu and also recovered. Guys ... it's a flu. Just calm down.

If only the UK press would listen to that advice, the whole UK media seems hellbent on scaring the entire country into some type of mass panic....then once they have scared everybody into rushing to the doctor or bombarding their local doctor, they then report on all the silly people who are panicking about the swine flu.

Its unbelievable.

You're probably more likely to get struck by lightening than to get swine flu.
That's not true at all but the sentiment is correct.

According to lightningsafety.noaa.gov: 1 in 400,000 chance of being struck by lightning in a year.

OVer 4,000 cases of swine flu in the U.S.A. alone, in a population of over 300 million. Factor in you really need to be in an affected area or know someone infected to get it (since many cases are isolated groups), I'd say the odds are pretty darn close, if not slightly better in favor of lightning.

But what are the odds if people near you have it? I'd say it shoots way up.

Here's the thing about Swine Flu. It sucks, but you'll probably get better. Hope you don't get it, but don't panic if you have it.

Aside from that, don't worry and get on with your life.

Well, the media have suceeded in scaring the pants off me. I'm trying hard to keep a sense of perspective.
