Babylon 5 - I'm finally going to do it

One of my summer projects was to watch B5 from start to finish. I only watched the eps, not the movies or the original pilot. Absolutely great show. I cried at the end.

 

I think everyone cries at the end.

Anyone who says he doesn't simply isn't secure with his sexuality.

 

What has crying got to do with sexuality? I don't understand that comment.

 

I was wondering if it had something to do with the phrase "Cry like a girl." I could be wrong though.

 

Okay, I know that expression (though again sex has nothing to do with crying) But he said "sexuality" not "sex"...

 

It was meant to be a quip on the really bad stereotype.

You know:

[FRATBOY] "Hey, real men don't cry! Only pussies and fags do." [/FRATBOY] etc. etc.

I apologize if it came off badly.

 

Oh, right, yeah now I get it. I wasn't too familiar with the stereotype for some reason. Sorry. I knew it was a joke thanks to the icon, but I didn't understand.

 

More to the point, if you don't cry at the end, you really don't get the show.

 

I'm 8 episodes into the series. I have a while yet I think.

 

For what its worth, I sobbed all the way through, first time. The speech before the toast (about Pak'ma'ra) and the final five minutes still make me cry.

 

Just a friendly reminder, (It's been great so far) that let's not talk about episodes in season 5 since I'm still on Season 1. Don't really want to be spoiled. Like I said, it's been good so far, but want to be careful. Thanks.

 

Neither do I. I finished watching the show yesterday straight through for the sixth time, and I didn't cry at the end.

According to Robert Smith, boys don't cry.

However, the phrase and joke might have worked better if Clegg used the word "masculinity" instead of "sexuality."

 

And the Sky Full of Stars

Wow. That episode was both awesome and frustrating at the same time. I thought they were going to go all the way and reveal what happened in those 24 hours before the Minbari surrendered and they didn't. That was the frustrating part. The good part was all these hints we have of the Gray Council and Delenn's involvement are building to something big I have a feeling and that's really the storyline this season I might remember the most. Yeah you have your Cintuari and Narn negociations, but from the very first episode with the "There's a hole in your mind" to now and realizing later on that Delenn does grow Hair, man what the hell happened in those 24 hours.

 

Which is where the variable nature of hyperspace comes in so handy.

As for who borders whom, in 3D space, everyone kinda borders everyone at one point or another and B5 in a little neutral patch of space smack in the middle of the major powers (Earth, Minbar, Narn, Centauri, Vorlon & the League.)

It also might be worth keeping in mind that given the nature of hyperspace travel and it's dependence on the gate/beacon network that there would be dozens, even hundreds of worlds within the "borders" of some of these races that nobody has ever visited simply because they don't have a gate. Jumpgates are after all very expensive and no government is going to install one in a system unless there's something worth visiting. Most systems in range probably get a quick survey from a jump capable ship, but if there's nothing worth an investment, it's on to the next one.

That's why you have independent surveyors like Sakai, who go in on contract for larger corperations that have bought/leased the co-ordinates of unsurveyed worlds that either had gates dropped near them because initial scans picked up traces of something interesting or already had ancient gates left by the original builders (don't ask, nobody knows who they are, but after watching all the DVDs you should be able to make a reasonable guess.)

 

Deathwalker

After the last two episodes, this one paled in comparison. It was good, but the first minutes in I was thinking it was a cross of DS9's Duet, Blood Oath (The term was even mentioned which make me kinda roll my eyes a bit) and Voyager's Nothing Human. However, the more the episode got going, and it ended up becoming an issue with the League of Non-Aligned worlds, I started becoming more interested, and was kind of wondering at the end if this episode had become a Kosh centric episode or not. Interesting developments, and some good stuff with the League and Vorlons but other than that, it was just average.

 

i guess opinion is opinion, but still, with dialogue like this, it's hard (for me) to quibble with the ep:

Yeah, I loved that dialogue a lot, one of the episodes shining moments.
