I want more grown-up things

I just turned 24, and I'm getting a little tired of still living like I'm in college. I want to buy a house...with a yard that I can mow...and an unfinished basement that I can renovate. I want to buy a new car (although I drive a minivan, so that's kind of grown-up). I want central air conditioning; this window unit in my apartment is not cutting it. I want to be able to paint my walls. I want a garage; I am tired of parking lots with douchebags who take up 2 spaces because they don't know how to drive. I want to throw a party without worrying about the people sleeping below me. I want an adult job, where I have nights and weekends off and don't have to worry about requesting off national holidays.

When does this kind of stuff happen?

Work on the adult job first, and then the other things will slowly fall into place.

But many "grown up" jobs nowadays still require some nights and weekends, so be prepared to just have to suck it up. Just another part of being grown up that really bites.

It happens when you go and make it happen. That means building a resume and getting a job that cam lead to a career. Half those things are either directly job related or would come when you have a job that can pay for them.

As auntiehill said, the adult stuff comes with the job. I didn't really get that until I was 26 years old, but I must say it's not bad at all. Don't get me wrong, there is a part of me that still longs for the college glory years. That craziness was a lot of fun, but I also love the stability that can come with an "adult" life.

Plus, I can't rave enough about a regular hour type job. I hated the odd hours of my college job. I like the ability to do things at night or the weekend without worrying if I have to work that night.

Hang in there. You're still young, and it will all come in time.

Oh, I know. I'm not worried about it, and I figured most of these things come with the job.

I've got a certification exam next week, and then (assuming I pass) I will actually be able to look for a grown-up job. The biggest issue for me, though, is location. I don't want to live in this town anymore, but I have no idea where I want to move. The idea of settling down somewhere kind of freaks me out.

Even so, I really just wish I had a yard. Even if I was renting a house, I want fricking yard!

The exam that I haven't taken yet.

Well, good luck.

But to paraphrase Spock in "Amok Time," you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting.

Happy as I am with my newly-furnished and decorated grown-up's apartment, I do sometimes feel crowded-in.

I kind of miss the wide-open spaces of my grad-student days, when living room furniture consisted of the sofa, the TV, and the XBox.

Well, my current days are quite cramped as my furniture is too large for my apartment.

When you have more money than God.

Somehow I don't think it takes quite that much money. It just takes good credit and liking where you live enough to settle down.

Speaking from experience - figure out where you want to live. I never felt properly settled anywhere (even with the house and yard) until we moved here to Canada. Because everywhere else just didn't feel right and I was always itching to move somewhere.

So, take a bit of time, research some places, figure out where you want to live. And head there :)

Man, I feel like I'm going in the opposite direction.

I got married, am living in a townhouse in the suburbs with my husband, and have been doing pretty well with my business. And it seems like everyone keeps expecting us to move to a proper house and have kids soon. But we decided that we just don't want to go down that route yet and living in the suburbs makes us feel like we're 20-something going on 40. So we've decided to pick up and move to the city when we can, and I'm going back to school.

Hey RoJoHen, want to move a bit east and buy our townhouse from us? It's a nice area. :D

Get engaged. It might help get things going. It's working for me right now after five years in three apartments then going back to school.
