Hardest Game You've Ever Played?

Personally I think back in the Sega/Nintendo years, those games were the hardest (mostly due to the lack of a save system). Trying to think of some more recent games, but I'm having trouble.

Tony Hawk's 3
Need for Speed: Underground drift racing
Need for Speed: Most Wanted drag racing (which aren't 1/4 mile straights.)
Delta Force: Black Hawk Down/Team Sabre limited health, limited number of saves... urg...

Need for Speed: Underground drift racing

All NFS drift racing sucks - basically the scores seem to be generated at random, and the enemy scores tend to suddenly jump to double yours half a second before you cross the finish line...

And I say this as an NFS thing who thinks Underground was the best of the series.

F1 Career Challenge is the hardest here - I never got past the tests you had to take to start a career! Always got jammed up on the "take a corner" test, and got so sick of hearing the bland "Let's try that again" that I tried to destroy the disc by hurling it around the room, edge-on at hard surfaces. And I even failed at that!

X-Wing. The original. I beat this game back in the '90s, and I've recently starting playing it again but I cannot seem to beat it these days, I guess I just don't have the patience I once had, either that or my reflexes aren't what they used to be. But no difficulty select, the Assault Gunboats and TIE Bombers seem to have infinite amount of torpedoes and missiles, and the my wingmen tend to bite it fairly easy, but having said that I still love the game.

Zork Nemesis is another one that I remember being fairly hard, and Mario Sunshine has to be one of the most difficult Mario games I've ever played, I'm on 96 shine sprites and have just given up on the rest.

The Windows 98-enhanced Collectors CD version of X-Wing had easier versions of some of the more difficult missions. I remember in particular an early mission to protect three shuttles and a corvette in the first Tour of Duty being impossible to complete without cheating (the corvette's name was Korolev... I still have nightmares about that mission). WIth the Collectors CD version it's now much easier to win. In particular, I found the final mission in B-Wing to be ridiculously easy on the Collectors CD.

The X-Wing games are notoriously difficult. I remember X-Wing Alliance being very hard in parts, especially the final mission of the tour with the nightmarish prototype TIEs, and the one where you had to destroy or disable an Interdictor just to survive.

I always found that one had a better chance by getting rid of your own wingmen first, cos they were useless...

And using an A Wing whenever there's a chance to do so.

The first swimming level is utterly impossible.

Another vote for this one. I could make it past the swimming level, it's the one after that I couldn't get through. There's a part where you have to use ropes to get from rooftop to rooftop, but I could never get the ropes to activate. :(

Yeah, I also remember that TIE Fighter expansion being very difficult. I love TIE Fighter like no other game out there, but that expansion pack was just insane in difficulty, even on medium. I liked X-Wing Alliance because sometimes you could choose what mission you wanted to undertake. And I do remember that Interdictor mission. I got to the point to where I could take out the Imperial Star Destroyers without too much hassle, as long as I kept the TIE Fighters in check - but star ships like the Interdictors I had trouble with because it seemed their firepower was more concentrated and not as spread out as the ISD's or ISDII's. Much easier to take out those cap ships than in Xwing vs. TIE Fighter, because it seemed the Star Destroyers would launch missles at you for just merely targeting them.

Yeah, the Defender of the Empire expansion to TIE Fighter was a real bugger to complete - I don't even remember if I did complete it at all.

But I was actually referring to one of the earlier Rebellion tours in "X-Wing Alliance" where you investigated the mysterious experimental TIEs with strange and funny configurations, all monitored and controlled by controller transports which were extremely tough to take out without being torn to pieces by the "mutant" TIE fighters. What really got me were those fat kamikaze TIEs, essentially unarmed flying robot drone bombs, who would do a suicide run on your home carrier behind your back, destroying it completely.

The final mission in the opening Azzameen campaign (before joining the Rebels) was also very difficult compared to the rest of that chapter. But I did love the scripted moments in that game, especially that opening prelude campaign, and still get goosebumps when the Imperials made their first appearance.

I'll admit I had a ton of trouble with the water level until I got down exactly how they moved underwater. The level with the rooftop ropes and all wasn't too bad as long as you didn't fall off the buildings. But Mechaturtle (the boss of that level) is a fucking bitch to kill. Usually, I was so screwed up by that battle I just didn't have the will to do very well in the next level. I never did beat that damn game. Here is a pretty hilarious walkthrough of it.

I loved the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games. Honestly, they didn't come close to being as hard as TMNT. I've always been good at space fighting sims, though. I was actually the best at TIE Fighter, even though you had no shields for most of it. Hardcore!!

My God, I had forgotten about this game. Made the mistake of renting it as a kid, thinking I could beat it over the weekend. Couldn't return that game fast enough.

Yeah, apparently it sold very well but was heavily criticized for being absurdly difficult. And it was. Unless you played with Donatello you were basically asking to lose.
