I didn't like Ben Cross at all. Mark Lenard was alive and engaged in whatever scene he was in, even when he wasn't speaking. His character just had presence that you couldn't help but be drawn to. Cross didn't really do much but just sit there and say lines.

I think Mark Lenard's Sarek had more of an edge to him; but Ben Cross had plenty under the surface, IMO.

He managed to convey a Vulcan suffering horror and grief at the moment his wife failed to appear on the transporter pad -- without moving a muscle. I felt very sad for him.

And he was fortunate to be given the best line the character has ever had: "You asked me once why I married your mother; I married her because I loved her!"

His scene with Quinto in the transporter room when both characters were grieving was very moving to me.

Yep, those are pretty much my thoughts too.

Like others have said, Mark Lenard will always be the definitive Sarek, but I thought Cross did an admirable job.

However, one wonders what events in the alternate timeline were so different as to cause this Sarek to start speaking in a British accent. ;)

I think Cross did a workman-like job, nothing special to it. Personally, I think that Mark Lenard was able to convey more with a single word, or subtle movement, and had a real presence on the screen. Not to mention he was sooo much better looking than Cross!

Don't make me think at the horror of the italian dubbing of Sarek in this movie. Ben Cross has a very peculiar voice, and in Italian they gave him the voice... of Riker. I wanted to cry. :(

I wasn't even thinking about Mark Lenard the first time I saw the movie. Cross definitely wasn't a distraction.

Ben Cross did a magnificent job as Sarek in the new movie...but I'll always be a major Mark Lenard fan and prefer his portrayal of the ambassador.

I think the comparison is a bit unfair since the characters were portrayed as being in quite different situations.

Lenard's Sarek was always in control, his appearances were always business-related, i.e. diplomacy etc, the whole personal relationships to Amanda and/or Spock were treated on the side.

In STXI, Sarek almost exclusively had to focus on his personal issues, he had no other role than as father to Spock, therefore, of course he can't bring the gravitas of a seaoned diplomat into his portrayal. And let's not forget, not only did Spock lose his mother, but Sarek lost his beloved wife (something Lenard's Sarek didn't have to deal with on screen) - that's having a huge impact on his character which Cross manages to portray quite well IMO.

I did not like Cross as Sarek the first go round. I missed Mark Lenard.

After my third viewing, I have come to accept him in the role. When he admitted to loving Amanda, he won me over a bit. :techman:

However, I will always love Mark Lenard's Sarek.

I was so excited to see him on TNG. He we always be Sarek to me.

Ironically, Spock and Sarek's relationship is one of the few things faring decidedly better in NuTrek than in Trek Prime.

I wasn't impressed with Xross's performance, and he's defintely no LeFleur, but I could see him growing into the part in future portrayals.

I remember someone bitching before the movie came out that Krosses face was too long compared to Marchk Lenords.

Ben Cross - 6.5/10
Mark Lenard - 10/10

Mark Lenard is hands down, the best Vulcan other than Nimoy's Spock. He was just spot-on.

Mark Lenard was definitely the better Sarek, but Ben Cross was fine. My biggest problem with Cross, though, is that he is too old to be playing Sarek. In TOS, the Sarek who was a few years older (at 102) looked much younger than this Sarek. He looked like a man in his 40's, not his 60's. It was especially disconcerting when he was in the scene with Kid Spock.

And please learn to spell Lenard the right way. LENARD. The misspellings are giving me a migraine!

And what's with spelling CROSS wrong? Jeez!
