I don't understand this "real look"...real look for whom? Aren't we the viewers supposed to be like flies on the wall? Or LOL are we on the brige holding a camera...?? To me it makes no sense to include it...the flares didn't bother me at all, but I still don't understand the reasoning for it.
Well, I can only tell you why I like it: Star Trek is the show that portrays humans' future in space -- not a galaxy a long time ago, far-far away. I like to see it as real as possible, since we will be going there.

I still don't see the connection between lens flares and Trek's portrayal of humans future in space...???

I don't understand how incorporating lens flares makes it "more real"...it doesn't make sense since there should be no lens flares at all since there shouldn't be a camera crew on the bridge....?!

Cakes, I did explain it above. Abrams said lens flares are part of the TOS ambiance, being an artifact of cameras that were more on a human level than current perfection.

But I don't remember any lens flares in TOS....and I'm not sure how that would relate to the ambiance.

Answer me this specific question (or anybody else feel free to jump in) since I just cannot understand the concept (as you can see):
Why would there be cameras on the bridge filming them when we as the audience are supposed to be flies on the wall. ??

OK wait... i just thought of something...are you saying that the bridge personnel sees the lens flares themselves?

You're welcome...I thought I had a break through there for a moment..so now I'm back to being confused...which is really what I do best har har...so I need you to answer this then:

I think it's basically because the flares make the picture look all bright and shiny. the Trek future is supposed to be that, no?

If we were flies on the wall, we'd see the picture like in a kaleidoscope, since flies have compound eyes.

I don't think that we're meant to think there are cameras on the bridge. He's not going for reality in that way, but recreating the "realness" of filming in the sixties - before digital cameras and CGI. In it's own way it's deliberately artificial, but it's the mood he wanted to create.

Karl Urban is my daddy, my uncle, my brother, my cousin, my male best friend, my dirty priest who doesn't mind that I am athiest.

Well, I'm done here. I've come to the end of the message board. I have to rest up my dyslexic eyes for the IMAX tonight, where I will see Karl's red-clad glutes.
