Bob Orci open to the possibility of Khan

Yeah, if we end up getting Khan Lite, I think I'll just wait for the DVD.

Plenty of fodder to remake in the Original Series, that could have same impact Khan did... if not bigger. The Doomsday Machine should be the obvious go to, as others have pointed out. No villain and the only scenary chewing is done by an inanimate object. Although you could certainly cast a big star in the Decker role and put him through hell.
Open the film with some backstory about Enterprise's five year mission of exploration being established. Maybe ferrying some Vulcans refugees, to seek out a new strange home world for them. They're dropped off somewhere in the Rigel system, just in time to be swallowed up by the Planet Killer.
Might as well continue this established anti-Vulcanian agenda...

^You know, I'd been thinking the same thing (great minds, eh? 
) except I couldn't help but feel like having mysterious thing going around destroying planets might be too repetitive from this movie. The more I think about it, though, the more I feel like "TDM" deserves being made into a movie way, way more than anything else, and really is pretty distinctive from what was happening in the previous movie - especially if Decker or a Decker-type character is played up as the "faced" antagonist. And there's your big star cameo, too. Heck, maybe Starfleet even has to team up with the Klingons or the Romulans or someone to fight TDM. (But now I'm repeating TMP! 
)

Oh, that was a biggie. We went to see the movie on sneak-preview night. There is no way I would have come in here without having seen it.

While you're right about growth opportunities for Kirk in something like that, I don't think they're ever going in that direction. Trek, for better or worse, is no longer being made in hour long installments (with a special effects budget of $1.29) to be viewed weekly. Nowadays we'd call TOS a cult hit TV show, that morphed into a big budget summer movie franchise, and those $$$$ considerations will drive the plots. Ideally what they want is movies that draw in huge chunks of the summer movie crowd in the first couple of weeks, and then us over and over for many more weeks. That's going to be really tough to do.
Now that I think about, Gary Mitchell wouldn't work. He's been butterflied.
First, nuKirk was years older when he went to the Academy so Gary Mitchell was years ahead of him at the Academy. Second, in this timeline, we know that McCoy was Kirk's best friend at the Academy. Wouldn't have nearly the impact to have some random officer turn glowy eyes and try to kill them all.
The other possibility might be a piece of pure speculation from back in the dim time, that Gary Mitchell was first officer before Spock. Possible only because Spock wasn't referred to as first officer until after that. But STXI butterflied that too.
And Khan, I just don't see how they could redo Khan. In this timeline, the old decrepid Botany Bay is still floating around out there with a charming Khan popcicle totally uninterested in revenge. He just wants to take over the universe. Which could be an interesting story but it's not Khan, so why call it Khan? Khan is only interesting as a revenge story and I really don't see them following Nero with another ... Nero.

And Orci has been out there talking with people on the internet for months. It's right in line with that for him to be bouncing ideas back and forth with fans now, and Khan is one that's going to be brought up, whether he does it or they do. He might as well talk about it, even if they (the filmmakers) are ultimately inclined toward doing something else; he's testing the waters to see both what sort of things we do want to see and what sort we don't. From there, it's up to them to decide what we will see and to decide how much they want to try to surprise us with it.
I'm hoping it ends up being quite a bit.
Jeri, there were HUGE debates about whether the TV series/movies should be rebooted in the Future of Trek forum here, long before the film was announced, some quite bitter (I know, it's so hard to imagine! ). I started off in the no reboot camp, but the more I thought about it, I knew they had to something, and what they did do seems to be a good compromise.

We anti-rebooters were something of a rabid group. Some of us more than others. 
But my point stands: since they chose to reboot, they must not allow themselves to be lazy.

how about the botany bay is eaten by the doomsday machine..
as for mitchell.. actualluy gary didnt meet kirk until kirk was an instructor at the academy.
kirk could have been out of the academy had the incident on the farragut and come back to teach at the academy as part of his recovery.
while kirk always had books in his cabin he seemed to have been almost a different peron during the period of time gary first meet him.
more somber, serious almost nose stuck into the book.
i always wonder just how much someone like kirk would have been affected by the farragutt incident.
especially since at first he blamed himself.
i could see gary and others playing a part in kirk getting back his mojo.
so really there is still time if orci ever does carry through with his list of people he woud like to see or have mentioned that included gary mitchell.

Actually, that isn't a bad idea - the Enterprise saves the Botany Bay from the DM, then Khan tries to take over the ship (a la Space Seed), so Kirk has to fight on two fronts, inside the ship, and outside. Throw in Decker and his ship, and you've got yourself a movie!how about the botany bay is eaten by the doomsday machine..
