Karen Gillan to play Matt Smith's Doctor's Assistant

Despite that, there are a couple of wags at Outpost Gallifrey trying to convince people that Karen will be playing Donna as a teenager, the Doctor having realized that interfering in her past is the only way for her to escape her fate from Journey's End... ;)

^ If RTD were gonna be running she show I might halfway suspect that would be true

I wouldn't. RTD was pretty clear about establishing a completely platonic relationship between the Doctor and Donna -- and, frankly, I doubt that Moffat would pair up two hot young actors with no intent of shipping them, especially since the Doctor hasn't had serious feelings for anyone since Rose. Why?

One would seriously hope Moffat has bigger thoughts in mind with regards his casting than 'Ooh won't these two look lovely togeather' . Many times when producers try to create a "ship" it fails miserably. For ever Dave and Maddie there's an Archer/T'Pol :wtf:

You're right though, the Moff does love his romance (From Press Gang to Coupling to Who) so I don't expect the show to go all puritan on us. My view on romance has never shifted, it's fine but don't make it the be all and end all and don't force it where it isn't there. If Smith and Gillian have chemistry togeather brilliant, but if they don't (in that way) then don't push it. Seriously what's the point? If you want some romance the Doctor can meet any woman from space and time. spoken as the guy who thinks 10 had more on screen passion with Reinette than he ever had with poor wittle Wose

I severely doubt that Moffat would have cast Gillian if she and Smith didn't have chemistry together.

Yes but there's chemistry and there's chemistry...It could be a friends chemistry (Doctor/Donna), could be a mentor/student chemistry (Doctor/ Ace), or it could be a romantic chemistry (Doctor/ Rose)- Guess we won't know until the new series airs.

True enough. Though I'm sure that Moffat knew what kind of chemistry it was when he cast them. :)

Bottom line: Get ready for another Epic Doctor Romance, folks! :)
Except that we don't know anything about the character yet. We don't even know her name.

I admit, I like StCoop's snarky idea that she's a young River Song. Doesn't have to be true. Probably won't be true; it's a little too fannish. I think wamdue's idea that she's a humaniform Ice Warrior is complete bollocks. We've nothing concrete -- except Karen Gillan's appearance -- to go by, so fans are inventing scenarios, whether they have any basis in reality or not.

For all we know, Gillan's character could be, like Izzy, a lesbian. Which could be interesting; the Doctor (maybe) fancies her, and she has absolutely no interest. :guffaw:

1) :guffaw:what made you think that?

2) well I do think she is cute, so yeah she will probaly end up being gay, but yeah the now almost fictional LesboTennant, would probaly approve of that as well.

That said not keen on the idea of theDoctor lusting after a companion, even if she is interested, he should have more dignity than that.

Probably not her costume in the show!

Certainly a looker. Thought so when she was in Fires of Pompeii. I expect she can act, they've been pretty good at casting.

Excuse me while I pick up my jaw, it appears to have dropped to the floor.

Well I'm sure he already has in his mind what kind of 'relationship' ;) there's is going to be...

Mentor/student I reckon...hoping she's a firely Celtic warrioress and they'll have a 4th Doc/Leela type thang... (She'll probably be a shop girl from Fulham now)

From BBC News:

Little-known actress Karen Gillan has been unveiled as the next assistant in Doctor Who.
The 21-year-old will star alongside new Time Lord Matt Smith in the new series, to be broadcast next year.
Gillan has already appeared in the drama, having played a Soothsayer in The Fires Of Pompeii in the last run.
"I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. - I just can't wait to get started," she said.

Well, she sure is pretty :D

They are going for a younger audience (nothing new in that though). And there is this interesting qoute from Moffat: "A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Interesting.

note how it didnt say " A generation of little girls will want to date her. And a generation of little boys will want to dress like her."

Ladies & gentlemen, RTDs Gay Agenda has failed, and Moffat, has axed it from the show.

Finally I can go back to dating women, and give my sister her clothes back (too far ? )

I do love me a red head

I hope they stick in a line where Smith's Doctor says oh I want to be ginger why can't I be ginger when he meets her (ref from Tennants line). Maybe the Doctor picks her because she reminds him of Donna with the red hair. Due to low age of both stars assuming ratings hold we could see a long era at last and not all these changes every year or two.

have any of the previous Doctors, ever wanted to be ginger, or was that just Ten?

Ten was the first to mention it, but he was obviously articulating a desire he'd previously have. I'd say it's a reasonable inference that Nine wanted to be a redhead next time he regenerated.

or maybe he had just watched BBC 3's "Fuck off im Ginger"

It's an indication that the Doctor hasn't been Merlin yet. Per "Battlefield," the Merlin Doctor has red hair. So, Tennant's Doctor saying in "The Christmas Invasion" that he wanted to be "ginger" means that he's not yet the Merlin incarnation. It was a sneaky, subtle continuity ref back to the old series. (And, also, an injoke at Billie Piper's ex-husband's expense.)
