NHL Play Off Prediction thread

Man, Carolina is getting slaughtered.
Yes...yes they are.

Having said that, game 3 was much closer than the 6-2 score would indicate. The score was 3-2 with 9:00 or so left in the game -- and the Canes seemed to be pressing hard. I was still worried that Carolina would tie it up -- and then anything can happen in OT. However, the Pens scored a goal with about 8:30 left, and that seemed to take the wind out of Carolina's sails.

Then, to add insult to injury, Pittsburgh scored the empty-netter directly from the face-off at the red line...and then more insult and even more injury, about less than a minute later Billy Guerin scored on a non-chalant backhand from about 20 feet out (not an empty-netter).

That 3-2 close game became a 6-2 blowout in a hurry.

If Pittsburgh can wrap-up their series Tuesday and the 'Wings close-out the 'Hawks on Wednesday, there is a chance that the NHL will change the Cup Finals schedule to start THIS weekend instead of next weekend, as originally scheduled.

If both teams do win the conference championships by Wednesday and the NHL doesn't change the schedule, then there will be eight days of no hockey until the cup finals. The stupid schedule is all about having the greatest number of weekend games, so they want to start on a weekend.

Ooooh, a Pens fan. You and I wont be very good friends for a while, haha. GO WINGS!

If it's any consolation, I hate both the Wings and the Pens :p

Although I hate the Pens a lot more at the moment.

That's OK...
...It takes all kinds. Some people are perfect, and some are Wings fans. :p ;)

Seriously though, I respect the Redwings for their consistency of quality for what seems to be forever. That respect, however, does not stop me from wanting to see the Penguins whoop some Red Wing ass in the Stanley Cup Finals this year as restitution for last years' finals.

Let's hope that both teams can make it that far. If Pittsburgh does make it, they aren't going to be simply "thrilled just to be there" like last year. The thrill this year would be in winning the Cup...

...but let's not look past the Hurricanes or the Blackhawks just yet -- a team still needs to win 4 games to win a best of 7. Nobody will simply "give" them the 4th after winning 3.

I don't hate the Red Wings. They win through talent and hard work, rather than by being goons or cheats. So I at least respect them.

I was glad to see Ty Conklin in goal last game-- The Pens owed him a lot last year, to which most fans are eternally grateful.

But then there's Marian fucking Hossa. He prolonged his contract negotiations for so long when he never had any real intention of staying in Pittsburgh. As a consequence we lost a lot of other good players-- including Conklin and Ryan Malone-- because Shero thought we could still get him. Even though the Pens rebuilt, and are a much better team than the one he was on, we'll never forgive Hossa.

I'd much rather see Eric Staal or Pat Kane hoist the Cup if it comes down to it.

Going back to my post about the NHL considering changing the schedule for the Cup Finals if Pittsburgh and Detroit win their respective games tonight (Pens' game 4) and tomorrow (Wings' game 5)...

...I was thinking about this, and I suppose a worst-case scenario for hockey fans is what if they don't finish the current series by this Wednesday? What if the conference finals go until this Friday or Saturday? Does that mean that the NHL will stick to the original shedule and start the Cup Finals on the following Friday? That could mean a 7 day layoff between the conference finals and the cup finals (which would suck -- and not just for fans, but for the NHL and the momentum being built up by these great playoffs).

I could easily see the NHL and NBC doing this because if they start on a weekend, the series could potentially be stretched across three weekends. If they start, say, on a Tuesday or Wednesday, then they would only get games falling on two weekends (potentially).

Tom Renney is also going to be a new Associate Coach alongside Quinn!

Quinn is exactly what the Oilers need right now. Quinn = Offense, and Renney = Defense. Both are solid veterans, and Quinn has demonstrated he knows how to coach young guns, and he's also good with the veterans too!

Elvis, Building, you know the drill.

I loved how Sid couldn't grab the PoW trophy fast enough tonight, after going out of his way to avoid it last year.

They mentioned last night on Versus that in 1991 Mario Lemieux also touched the Prince of Wales Trophy on his way to winning his first Stanley Cup...I wonder if Lemieux (Sid's boss and landlord) reminded him of that fact.

Anyone else think that Renney could have gotten a head coach job somewhere? I thought he coached decently in NY... I don't necessarily think that a coach can be blamed for the overpayed underachievers on his team.

PRetty sure the Penguins are going to win the cup, even against Detroit. They look unstoppable.

Detroit has had a way of stopping people this year. First they have to put away Chicago, but I wouldn't hand the Cup to the Pens just yet.

Edit: Hey the Wings won. Looks like it's officially a rematch.

That was a hell of a goaltenders duel. The best of the playoffs. Huet's end-of-period save blocking that shot while on his belly was incredible!

As for the prediction... Pens in 6. (C'mon Nick, Pavel! Aggrevate those injuries! Now's the perfect time to carry that sofa upstairs!)

I'm a Pens fan and they are much improved over last year, but the Wings have to be the favorite. Detroit's skill and depth is incredible.
